"People always say Ocarina of Time helped push forward the age of 3D-gaming, when in reality Super Mario 64 did that, and not Ocarina of Time."
I don't see what that has to do with anything. Entertaining the notion that quality and effect on industry are the same thing, the idea of 3d gaming had been around for a while with games like doom and wolfenstein, and neither OoT nor Mario64 really helped "push forward" the age of 3D gaming, because it inevitably would've happened anyways.
Anyways, I would not call OoT overrated, because even today it remains awesome. Really only two things in it have dated, the graphics and the combat engine, both of which where top of the line at their time and neither of which are by any means bad. The graphics are self explanatory, N64 graphics, you know. The combat, though still better than some modern games like fable 2, is a bit stiff and simplistic, but with a little bit of tweaking (extra swordplay moves ect. like in TP) it could be up to date and rival most games on the market now.
I'll just list the reasons some of the reasons it's still awesome.
-Big open world, with lots of variety and different environments
-Good story, which was fun and exciting at some points, dark and gritty at others. You enter a world of excitement as an enthusiastic young adventurer, but when you pull out that master sword you jump to the post apocalyptic future that you couldn't prevent and now have to fix. It executes it in such a compelling way that it feels like you're the hero of an epic. Also, it's got one of the most awesome climaxes ever.
-Great level design. Temples where long and had tons of interesting puzzles, mechanics, and enemies. You can not honestly tell me that forest temple didn't fuck with your head.
-Awesome and intense boss fights and sub bosses. Volvagia, Bongo Bongo, Ghoma, Shadow ganon, Dark link, ganondorf, the list goes on. There was not one boss fight in this game that didn't have me on the edge of my seat.
-It's long and has almost no filler aside from those optional side activities like the shooting gallery you can do. There are 3 temples when you're a kid, 7 when you're an adult, plus the ice temple and the well, and those are just the main challenges. Other places in the game such as the lost woods offer additional challenges and playtime, and there are plenty of side quests that yield useful rewards. You can go through the game without ever getting the ice arrows, the bombchus, the Biggoron's sword, ect. But if you want to do the quests to get those things they'll all help in the future.
-Chickens. You know what i'm talking about.
-Almost all the items you get in dungeons can factor into combat somehow.
That's just off the top of my head. Any game from 12 years ago that does all this and still holds up as a great game today deserves all the praise it gets.
