I pronounce it the same way your friend does.
Really? Odd...

It seems like 'eh-skay-pist' seems like it should be the right one... You don't es-kah-p from an angry bear, you eh-skay-p.
In other words you two are in complete agreement because it is the friend who pronunces it as "eh-skay-pist" and the OP who was mistaken. But don't feel bad, you're not the only one on this forum who seems to have severe trouble with comprehension.

It's a pretty generic English word, so pronunciation should probably be like escapism and/or escape (nifty little key on the keyboard).
Also, I believe the writers/editors actually say the word in some video's, so you could deduct the correct pronunciation from there.

Escape-ist. (Es-Kay-pissed)

I laugh whenever anyone says "Wrath" with an a like in "cat" as opposed to the o in "otter".
You are from England aren't you? Otter is the British pronunciation whereas Cat is the American.
I think it's both, depending on the usage. It's A as in the letter for the ghostly creature or Halo tank, a like in cat for a strong vengeful anger or indignation.
Wrath(as in anger). Not Wraith(as in specter). Those are too different words.

(the first one doesn't have an I)

I've only ever heard it pronounced "es-cay-pist". I didn't know there was another way of pronoucing it.

It's pronounced es-cay-pist. That's how the word is pronounced. Any other pronunciation is wrong. You are wrong.

Escape - escapist. Therefore it would be Escape-ist.
This isn't one of those words that can be spelled several ways, like Scone. This is dead straightforward.

Guess You must be from mainland Europe or something. I know I am, and if I wasn't so awesome with English, I would have pronounced it as Es-cah-pist too. It's just that the A is pronounced Ah in germanic languages and Ay in English or whatever. You're supposed to get that in high school or something.

Which is correct? As pretty much every single person in this thread so far has told you, not the one you've been saying; the correct pronunciation of "escapist" is simply "escape" + "ist". Escape is pronounced "ess-cayp" and not "ess-cahp, ergo Escapist wouldn't be pronounced that way either.

A better question would regard the first syllable. Do you use [ e ]scapist or [ i ]scapist?
