I prefer games that give me an equal chance with the computer soldiers in the map. For instance, you could just run through Goldeneye 64 with pounds of lead in your chest while mowing down an entire army. So, I beat the game to unlock a mode to edit health and such, so that I changed everything to one hit kill, so that I actually had to play the game somewhat as if I actually was there. This is also why I prefer online shooters, because I like equal chance of survival.

I personally don't like dying with one shot, in all I prefer Call of Duty.

I have no preference for realism level, but I want the things that the developers MEANT to be real to be real.

Like in COD, I don't get mad at regenerating health, that's a game mechanic, but if something in the storyline makes no sense, I won't take the excuse of "It's just a game, its not hyper realistic"

Realism tends to detract from the fun factor for me. Sure, it's great that the guns look and sound real and everything is authentic, but when you get shot in the arm once and die instantly... not really that fun to me. I prefer Call of Duty and Halo.

I don't really like realism at all, much prefer to be in the future battling aliens rather than the present day fighting Russians. I guess it's because I play games to escape realism, I don't really want it catching up with me.

Arcadey all the way. I play FPSs just to have fun, so I enjoy having fun playing them... kinda obvious eh? On that note, I feel like getting shot once dieing and then having to respawn again really isn't all that fun...

I like my FPS's as unrealistic as possible. Blasting through levels that look like movie scenes while blowing the heads off of humanoid pigs and only stopping to visit a strip club and spout a catchy catchphrase. Naturally, this would all be done with fantastically garish rock music playing and an American flag waving patriotically in the background.

...I just described Duke Nukem, didn't I?

I hate it when games say that realism is an innovation. Gameplay is more important. For this reason I said arcadey.

With the release of Modern Warfare 2 and its touted "realism" the thought came to me that Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, in my mind, did probably one of the best jobs at balancing the gritty combat realism with realistic tactics without making it super realistic and making you wait for hours in between engagements with a game like ARMA 2, while still making the game accessible for most gamers.

So my question is this, what level of realism do you personally prefer in your shooter?
Realism like a Tom Clancy game is what I prefer, but unrealistic (aka) Resistance is good also.

For me it personally doesn't matter, cause it all boils down to gameplay, if its smooth then immersion will ensue

Eh, semi-realistic. I don't want to be shooting aliens on Planet Zog, but I don't want to get killed instantly if I pop my head out of cover for two seconds too long.

Lolwut?

Sorry, but I would love to meet the person claiming a COD game is realistic. Unless, of course, they can land a perfect head shot with the iron sights of an AK47 while strafing to the right. In which case, be my guest.

However: I love semi-realism, much like the COD titles. I want to do things that I could never normally do in real life, or as a typical soldier in a game.

I don't think realism in an FPS should be judged based on the setting, but rather the physics, feel, and damage of the guns. Hell, Killing Floor's guns are some of the best-feeling and most realistic guns I've seen in a game, and that is a game about killing zombies.
