I'm quite into Modern Warfare 2 right now but when I hit level 70 I'll quickly grow bored of it since there's nothing left to do. Sure you could prestige but then you're just doing the same thing twice... nothing's different.

The arcadey style of Halo always draws me back more than any other game because it's just damn fun. Lasers? Aliens? ATV's that can be deadly? I can grow bored of it for a little while after playing too long but it always brings me back to it eventually.

I don't really like realism at all, much prefer to be in the future battling aliens rather than the present day fighting Russians. I guess it's because I play games to escape realism, I don't really want it catching up with me.
I don't think realism in an FPS should be judged based on the setting, but rather the physics, feel, and damage of the guns. Hell, Killing Floor's guns are some of the best-feeling and most realistic guns I've seen in a game, and that is a game about killing zombies.
Fair point I guess, but still I think I prefer using crazy alien weaponry to standard human weapons.

I like them to be realistic but not so realistic that it's frustrating and almost impossible to play.

With the release of Modern Warfare 2 and its touted "realism" the thought came to me that Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, in my mind, did probably one of the best jobs at balancing the gritty combat realism with realistic tactics without making it super realistic and making you wait for hours in between engagements with a game like ARMA 2, while still making the game accessible for most gamers.

So my question is this, what level of realism do you personally prefer in your shooter?
I prefer call of duty, and I would like simulators if they weren't all piles of bugs and shit. You liked GRAW? I thought it sucked, but then I also thought Bioshock was mediocre.

first off, I don't play any of the games you listed...

secondly, realism sucks. its brown in a desert, green in a jungle, and people are hard to see. You can't jump as high or run as long. Ammo is expensive, there are no respawns, and health doesn't return in 5 seconds while ducking. In all reality, reality sucks as a game. Give me shit like quake, ut2k4, and tf2 any day. I play games to escape reality.

Where's "totally unrealistic" option on that poll? Like, i dunno, Serious Sam? Doom? That's what i prefer. Realism pretty much sucks. Though sometimes...

Sometimes i'm up for the challenge, and need

Well as long as i can look down and see my characters legs, i'm happy. I just feel uneasy about being a pair of floating arms holding a gun.

It depends on the game, really. If the game is well-designed, realism can be at any level and it will still be entertaining.

Where does Just Cause fit in? FPS realism is great as long as it is still fun, but would you rather play a James Bond-ish game (MW2 Campaign(snowmobile level, anyone?)), or a more realistic fighter like the COD4 campaign? They're both great.

I like Tf2 quality if for no other reason then graphics whores and ultra "hardcore" gamers who think not realism=bad stay away from them.

Total Simulation. Surprised I havn't seen Project Reality pop up just yet. I think it's a very good balance for people not willing to crawl through virtual mud in the dead of night for two hours only to be hit from over 700 metres and bleed out...

I hate realism in games. Games like rainbow six and modern warfare come along and claim to be realistic, but when compared to the ultra-realistic, super hardcore often military simulation games like Arma and first to fight the enemies may as well be purple cthulhus and you're armed with a snake that shoots chainsaws.
