How many prostitute are prostitutes because they choose to be? Not many, so I don't think it is fair for the woman to get in trouble. Obviously being a pimp should be illegal, becuase they are pretty well slave traders.

They'll never get rid of it. It's the oldest profession in the world. Making it legal would not only reduce the danger and problems that are faced by prostitutes now, but also reduce the influence of pimps and criminals selling people for sex. It would make sex-trafficking a lot easier to deal with, and those who choose prostitution won't be punished for basically doing something that they have every right to do. Why should there be a problem if a girl is willing to take money for sex from someone? It's only the ones who are forced into it that need the law involved, and that's only for their own protection. So I say, yes, make prostitution legal. It's the best way to sort out the problems associated with it once and for all.
I agree with you mate.

Prostitute: One who solicits and accepts payment for sex acts.

(No such thing as a free hooker, that would just make them easy, or hussies.)

I think it should be legalised, but it should have standards.

In the state of Nevada, Prostitution is legal, but there are standards on it. How the prostitutes are treated, how much they earn, standards that help them earn a decent living from what they do. A certain beothel in Nevada (Whose name I can't remember) calls the people working there "Self-employed business women" (or something similar), so a price is set and paid beforehand, they do a health-check on the umm *cough* client, to check for any STIs etc., and they do it in a suit of the client's choice. And this works successfully, and means that the prostitute isn't beaten up by a pimp who then takes most of her money, leaving her with below minimum wage etc. it really is successful.

We were debating this issue at schoool, and I thought it would make an interesting topic.
So, I would like to know what my fellow Escapists think of the whole issue.

Do you think that legalising prostitution would be a helpful way of getting rid of the criminal element? If not, why?

Also, what do you moraly think of the whole prostitution concept?
Morally I'm not keen, but I am a realist. Prostitution happens. It has always happened, it always will happen.

Keeping it illegal puts money and the lives of vulnerable - often desperate - women into the hands of organised crime.

Legalisation allows for regulation. Generally speaking the people most vehemently opposed to legal prostitution are religious old women.

Punishing people who are already at the lowest point of their life seems rather pointless.

So no, being a prostitute shouldn't be illegal.
On the other hand, visiting a prostitute, or being a pimp, should be.
The legal definition of pimp is anyone who uses the income of a prostitute. This includes more people than you would think. The child of a prostitute is a pimp (legally) if the food they eat was bought using funds from prostitution. If a man's wife is a prostitute, then if they file for taxes together, it is pimping.

I say legalize it, and wrote a 4 page essay on it a year or so ago.

And in response to the many questions I will get: Yes, I would be okay with my daughter being a prostitute, though I would not be happy with it for two reasons, unrelated to the job:

1)It is a low pay job. Hourly, you're making a killing, but considering you don't work a standard 9-to-5 job as a prostitute, you don't really make that much.
AND
2)Considering I'm going into teaching, I would expect any child of mine to go into a job that requires knowledge. Prostitution is a low-qualification job.

I'd agree with a few of the people on here. We should legalise it so that we can tax it and make sure the prostitutes are licensed. That way we could (hopefully) contain the STD's that they might have and we may reduce the criminal aspect. That is asuming that the government actually do there jobs.

By that definition the prostitute herself should be considered a pimp.

I agree with a great many of your points. But with strict enough rules you can avoid a lot of the problems of 'putting prostitution in the public eye' (so to speak).

I think that you fail to see the bigger picture though, my friend.
Fact is, prostitution always has and always will exist, legal or not. Do you think that because it is illegal it doesn't exist outside of Nevada? Of course you don't, because the truth is that some people are prepared to pay for sex whilst other people are either willing or desperate enough to sell sex.

Morally I dislike the idea of prostitution, I would never pay for sex and I'd be distraught if a relative or friend of mine decided to sell their body. But consider this: if someone I knew decided to 'go on the game' I would rather they worked for a legal brothel than some back-street pimp or become the property of an organised crime syndicate.

If a trade is legal then it is open to government regulation and investigation. Nevada might have its share of problems but I expect it doesn't have to deal with the abhorrent 'human traffic' trade that pervades the cities of Europe, where girls from poor countries are smuggled into places like London to work in underground brothels as sex-slaves with no hope of escape, no basic human rights and no hope of protection from the law.

For me legal prostitution is simply a case of choosing the lesser of two evils.

I believe that the definition states "any person other than the prostitute". I don't have the paper on me. Also, prostitutes are punished worse than pimps.

To use a deeply flawed analogy, that's like saying that murderers should be charged with larceny for stealing another persons life. At that point, it doesn't matter.

Again, I wrote the paper a year or two ago. I don't have it on me, so I don't have the exact definition. All I remember is my source for it said that the legal definition had been used to convict young children and husbands that combined incomes with their wives of "pimping".

Hookers make bank.

Are you're saying your daughter isn't pretty enough to be a prostitute? How cruel.

Your legal definition is jack-sh*t here when we're talking common sense, which blows away your absurd, stringy straw man argument. The old, flawed definition means nothing when we're debating what the law SHOULD BE.

I hope you get swine flu.
