Good list but mine is pretty different.

-Tekken 5
-Tekken Tag Tournament
-Jak 3
-Ratchet and Clank Up Your Arsenal
-R&C Deadlocked
-Sly Copper 1
-Tekken 4
-Kingdom Hearts
-Kingdom Hearts II
-Devil May Cry 3

These games are the reason I game today. I love 'em. ^-^
I think that having 3 installments from one fighting game series is a bit excessive. I mean, fighters traditionally change a teensy bit with each game, so for the sake of a comprehensive list couldn't you pick the one? I know it's hard (I can never tell you which Soul Calibur is my favourite) but 3 Tekkens seems like too many, I think.

uuugh, Blog Post much? Two can play at that game :)

Still, 6 out of the 10 titles you mention as far from PS2 exclusives and you're far better off getting them on PC or Xbox. Also MGS3: Subsistence is far better than Snake Eater, here is my list only I have the caveat that they MUST be 100% PS2 exclusives (alphabetical):

1. Devil May Cry
2. God of War (1 or 2)
3. Gran Turismo 4 (also GT3 but ya know)
4. Jak and Daxter (1, 2 or 3)
5. MGS3: Subsistence
6. Onimusha (1 to 4, take your pick)
7. Ratchet & Clank (1 to 4)
8. Shadow of Colossus
9. Sly Cooper (1 or 2)
10. Time Crisis (2 or 3)

What didn't make this list on technicalities (not exclusive) though I would recommend for PS2 include:
-Soul Reaver 2
-MGS2
-Silent Hill 2
-Resident Evil Code Veronica X
-Alien Hominid
-Okami

While I'm at it I'll do a top-ten for Gamecube, only this time screw exclusivity, if they are on this list that's because IMHO the game is worth playing and worth playing ON the Gamecube. Actually, screw that, there are too many good games worth getting for the Gamecube to fit into a top-10, here is my top 20, you're not a real gamer till you've played them all :D

1. Eternal Darkness
2. F-Zero GX
3. Geist
4. LotR: Return of the King
5. LotR: Two Towers
6. Metroid Prime
7. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
8. MGS: Twin Snakes
9. Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door
10. Resident Evil
11. Resident Evil 4
12. Resident Evil Zero
13. Star Fox Adventures
14. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II
15. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron III
16. Super Mario Sunshine
17. Super Smash Bros. Melee
18. Zelda: Four Swords Adventure
19. Zelda: Twilight princess
20. Zelda: Wind Waker

All rock solid titles and some of the best graphics of it's generation, and I STILL had to exclude some really fine titles to squeeze it into a top 20, and this is only in alphabetical order, Wind Waker is only at position 20 because it Z for Zelda is at the end of the alphabet.

Xbox top 10:

1- Halo: CE
2- Halo 2
3- Timesplitters 2
4- Timesplitters: Future Perfect
5- Burnout 2
6- Burnout 3
7- Red Dead Revolver
8- Ninja Gaiden Black
9- Black
10- Urban Chaos: Riot Response

But the best game of that generation came out on PC anyway and I wouldn't even know where to start for compiling a top 10 or even top 30 for the 2001-2006 time period

PS2 was a fine console and really took the lions share of exclusives and had an amazing 1st party line-up.

But the problem is it was TOO successful as at marginalised really good platforms like the Gamecube to the point where it got a terrible reputation which is completely undeserved. Prime example is RE4 for Gamecube, SOO much better on the GC but the half-baked PS2 port get all the attention, if most PS2 gamers knew how much they were missing out they'd never have accepted it. But back them the pandering to the majority was shameless.

I notice a distinct lack of Killzone. Am I the only person who enjoyed it?

Before it, I thought FPS games were the stuff of PC's only.

I accept your challenge, sir. A valient counter-attack on your part, but an 8-page beast it is not.

More importantly, the exclusives issue was on my mind from the start. There can be no denying that the PS2 has some of the best 1st party lineups ever, but in an age where multiplatform titles are the great majority few honest lists will be 100% exclusive-based. At no point did I claim that my list would be exclusively exclusives, and I never thought it would be. Games like TimeSplitters and Urban Chaos are superior to their Xbox counterparts by way of better controls, and from what I worked out only 3 of my picks (plus Soul Reaver, which I admitted is better on Dreamcast) are actually on PC. For that matter, aren't third-person shooters and platformers notorious for being awkward with a keyboard and mouse?

I appreciate the giant comment and you raise some interesting points, but I feel my list is justified, even if a few iffy spots have appeared in the paintwork. Exclusive does not automatically mean good, and many of the best titles were made multiplatform to maximise profits, as we all know.

I haven't played Subsistence due to the extortionate price for a PAL copy, and so couldn't in all fairness call something I've never even seen one of the PS2's best games.

And please tell me quite simply how Resident Evil 4 is significantly better on GameCube. Have I been using the "okay" version all this time while there's a "fantastic" one out there? PS2 has some exclusive junk and better controls, so unless the GameCube version comes with a Coke dispenser I don't see the advantage.

Sweet memorium. Didn't read a word of it, but I did vote Yup as I am still a fan of the PS2 but use my new 360 WAAAY more than it now and have abandoned Sony as a gaming platform company as of yesterday.

You're not alone in your Killzone liking. I might even prefer it to the sequel. It might be bug-ridden, sloppily made, have wildly inconsistent sound quality and a plot bland enough to write a novel about business suits with, but Killzone feels unlike almost any other FPS I've played. It's so slow and meaty, from the huge amounts of recoil to the achingly long reloading times. It feels like every shot fired or clip slotted in is a tactical decision. That's just cool. The Helghast are fascinately infinitely more memorable than the protaganists, and that *thunk-splatter* sound of popping their heads over and over again is just magical.

It's not one of my favourite shooters, and wasn't in my "maybe" pile for this list, but it's a perfectly good blaster with some real potential that sadly didn't get too far.

Yes...the PS3 has yet to blow my mind. Then again, neither have the 360 or Wii, so it's disappointment all 'round. Then again, I have precious little love for the Wii whatsoever. The best thing about it is the GameCube compatibility, and that's hardly the main point of a new system. I hope beyond hope that the PS2's sales record isn't broken by that. Anything else I can deal with, but the Wii? Lots of ground to cover yet, but still...

OP: Someone made a comment about "blog post much?" and in that regard, I would like to seek permission for me to post your OP to my blog (with accreditation of course) so that it might seek a wider audience outside these hallowed web-pages (not much wider, but my RSS feed gets around 150 readers, so not too shabby)

Well, I count exclusives because I generally try to own all the platforms of a console generation, in the end at least (though I didn't actually get an Xbox Original till after the Xbox 360 had launched) and due to the nature of the PS2's design it fared poorly on multi-platforms as not only was it underpowered compared to the competition but was very tricky to develop for. Third party titles are usually multiplatform where in the last generation at least the Xbox or PC usually stole the advantage due to being generally more powerful and flexible.
But the PS2's design meant it was capable of making great game in the hands of the right developers, though they were usually the 1st party studios.

Consider the "honourable mentions" as good as for my top-# list. I could probably also make a "20 games you must play on PS2" just like I did for Gamecube. Here is my attempt:

1. Devil May Cry 1 & 3
2. God of War 1 & 2
3. Gran Turismo 3 & 4
4. Jak and Daxter & II & 3
5. MGS3: Subsistence
6. Onimusha 2, 3 & 4
7. Ratchet & Clank 1 to 4
8. Shadow of Colossus
9. Ico
10. Sly Cooper 1 & 2
11. Time Crisis 2 & 3
12. Soul Reaver 2
13. MGS2
14. Silent Hill 2
15. Resident Evil Code Veronica X
16. Alien Hominid
17. Okami

Ok, more like "17 must play PS2 games", but half of those entries are series recommendations which puts it up to 29! So when it comes to series, I guess I'd have to pick just one or two, can't decide right now so lets just move on.

And as to certain games on PC, all the Splinter Cell, Hitman and GTA games are FAR better on PC, mainly thanks to mouse look/aim. I have been a long time fan of the Tomb Raider games on PC where even the keyboard is not a hindrance (if you get a good keyboard though). I'm telling you, the freedom of the mouse is so great that going back to gamepad feels like walking with lead boots. And you can use just a plain old USB gamepad on PC if you really want to.
But generally, even third person shooters excel with a mouse + KB and another added benefit is some of the slightly older games I can play on my laptop anywhere, can't do that with any home console, only play a PSP or DS version. Just consider the absolute classic PC game, Max Payne, that's a third person shooter, I play it on my laptop often when I go to visit my grandad where I can't take my gaming PC nor games console.

As to Resi 4 on gamecube, from http://www.gameswelike.com/web/re/RE%20Comp.htm

Yeah, guess which is the which version...

http://www.gwlvideos.com/Vids/RE/comp/RE4%20comp%2009.mpg

Just EVERYTHING is significantly better, most particularly the lighting engine, real time lighting on the Gamecube version that means you have a torch that actually illuminates things, monsters hide in shadows to burst out at you, lightening casts striking shadows to really add to the mood of the game. And have you seen the other Resident Evil games on the Gamecube?

RE 4 is a great game and it really does deserve being played as intended on the platform it was developed for, the Gamecube. RE4 truly is a Gamecube game to any gamer who knows his stuff and want to get the most bang for his buck.

I always like to play the best games in their best form, whether on Console or PC, within reason of course.

im pretty suprised, not that im angry at all, your choices are mostly nothing like mine, nor my friends, as we have chatted about this many of times, and i've played a good 6 of those games, and didn't think they were special at all really

-ratchet and clank (cant remember exact one)
-sw battlefront II (played this hundreds and hundreds of freaking times...)
-kingdom hearts 1 and 2 (played these to death also)
-ffx
-fifa world cup 06 (i like soccer, i know most people would never have even played this, but this is the best soccer game out, all the new ones are too realistic in some ways and fucking stupid)
-orphan (dont ask why, i just liked this game alot)
-god of war II, great game, ill agree with you there
-ffxii (regardless of what people say, i poured over a hundred hours into this game and dont regret it)
-destroy all humans (can't remember which one did best but loved em)
-prince of persia (the first one was bomb as fuck)

these are in no order of course
I enjoy having someone with completely different faves, though at least 3 of your list were in my "maybe" pile from the beginning. You're also the first person to mention Destroy All Humans so far, so congrats there.
haha yes, difference is good, as me and my friends debate alot about favorite games, but at least we have some common interests, and wooh, thats cool, since there was already 3 pages of posts before mine

just curious what are you favorite top 10 ps1 games?

This is an upsetting list. You seem to have forgotten all the true classics in favor of dime a dozen games like Burnout (which incidentally is loaded up on my ps3 at the moment but I digress) and hitman. I respect your opinions but as the years have gone by I believe we've come to see what the true classics are, and most of these aren't it.
I class games by their quality, and something impossibly entertaining like TimeSplitters is as worthy in my book as something more artsy like Shadow of the Colossus. HOWEVER, I have spent countless more time enjoying myself thoroughly with one of those games than the other, and the more consistently fun one gets my thumbs up most of the time. Calling Burnout "dime a dozen" is overly harsh, especially since my chosen game might be the most truly innovative of its series. And Hitman is definitely not throwaway entertainment, I tell you that.

I'm really curious to hear a few more examples of your chosen classics, just to better understand what you're trying to communicate. We've already heard about ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, but what else? Just a couple more even would do.
I class games the same way as you do. I won't argue Timesplitters but we'll have to agree to disagree on the hitman franchise. The original on PC was interesting at best but I've just never liked the series. It might surprise you to hear that I'm not sold on ICO being in my own top 10 list. It's an artistically stunning game and was loads of fun but I feel it might have gotten by on art more than it's roots as a game.

I've mentioned earlier in this thread that I'm just really bad at lists. I always forget things. I do feel pretty confident that I would include both Metal Gear Solid 3 and Silent Hill 2 would be on the list. Other possible entries include San Andreas and, no doubt, Okami but it's to my eternal shame that I haven't played it so I don't feel comfortable listing it despite how confident I am it would be there.

This is a good thread though, I've enjoyed the discussion.

I think you should thin your list down: do what I did and have one game per series unless the two games in one franchise are completely different. As for the R&C vs. J&D debate, the war will go on for as long as PS2 fans exist, and just as inevitably there will be a third, smaller group saying "but what about Sly?"
I would but unfortunately, there aren't really any others i've played that i love. i don't get Ps2 games that often, but i've played the ones i have to death, and still going strong on some. And Sly is awesome, just not at the same level as Jak and Ratchet. i intend to get Shadow of the Colossus/Okami/Psychonauts ASAP

I've always enjoyed the Ps2 because it REALLy got me into Armored Core.

I have yet to see a game on any other system that made me love it so much.

No love for Ratchet and Clank. In a PS2 thread.

[HEADING=1]Ooooooooh, IT'S SOOOO BLOODY ON RIGHT NOW![/HEADING]

R&C surely deserves to be on the list instead of, oooh say, Hitman! Because Hitman dosen't even have much to do with PS2 to begin with! If we were in immideate vicinity of eachother, i'd smack you across the face.

I don't want to imply that one of two great 3D platformer series is better than other (because either one is as good as another), but i am convinced that having them both on that list is waaaaay more important than having three stealth games on it!

An interesting proposition. Since my intention with this giant thing was to encourage PS2 playing, it would be foolish to alienate potential acolytes.

Very well sir; on the basis that I get full credit for my creation, you may post it on your thingimibob. Send me the link whenever so I can give it my approval, and I'll consider our business complete.
