just curious what are you favorite top 10 ps1 games?
I could tell you my top few in no particular order, but after that I have no idea. The PS1 has many games crippled by shoddy control, which is a massive shame. The later you go the better it generally gets for PS1, but some exceptions defy the trend. Anyway, here we go:

-Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
-Sheep, Dog 'n' Wolf (aka Sheep Raider)
-Colony Wars: Vengeance
-Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer (aka Ripto's Rage)
-Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro

After that it gets fuzzy and inconsistent, but those 5 are definitely up there.

I class games the same way as you do. I won't argue Timesplitters but we'll have to agree to disagree on the hitman franchise. The original on PC was interesting at best but I've just never liked the series. It might surprise you to hear that I'm not sold on ICO being in my own top 10 list. It's an artistically stunning game and was loads of fun but I feel it might have gotten by on art more than it's roots as a game.

I've mentioned earlier in this thread that I'm just really bad at lists. I always forget things. I do feel pretty confident that I would include both Metal Gear Solid 3 and Silent Hill 2 would be on the list. Other possible entries include San Andreas and, no doubt, Okami but it's to my eternal shame that I haven't played it so I don't feel comfortable listing it despite how confident I am it would be there.

This is a good thread though, I've enjoyed the discussion.
Alright then. I wasn't sure where you were going to start with but now I see you're a reasonable type with good taste. I'll tell my troops to stand down. Just one thing: when you said "I won't argue Timesplitters" what did you mean? You do agree with me about its quality or are you unfamiliar with it? Just curious, here.

Just EVERYTHING is significantly better, most particularly the lighting engine, real time lighting on the Gamecube version that means you have a torch that actually illuminates things, monsters hide in shadows to burst out at you, lightening casts striking shadows to really add to the mood of the game. And have you seen the other Resident Evil games on the Gamecube?

RE 4 is a great game and it really does deserve being played as intended on the platform it was developed for, the Gamecube. RE4 truly is a Gamecube game to any gamer who knows his stuff and want to get the most bang for his buck.

I always like to play the best games in their best form, whether on Console or PC, within reason of course.
Nearly all of that seems to be related to visual niceties, which I don't consider a valid rival for better controls. The extra content is just icing on PS2's cake, but frankly my not great fondness for Resi 4 is the result of the core game, and a slightly different version won't change that. I see Resi 4 as a passable action game and a sub-par horror title, so neither genre's criteria are met well. The plot isn't even too gripping, so one can't make the argument of "worth playing for the story". Naturally I'm in the extreme minority here, but I just don't consider Resi 4 as anywhere near the 6th generation's best, regardless of what system you own it on.

No love for Ratchet and Clank. In a PS2 thread.

[HEADING=1]Ooooooooh, IT'S SOOOO BLOODY ON RIGHT NOW![/HEADING]

R&C surely deserves to be on the list instead of, oooh say, Hitman! Because Hitman dosen't even have much to do with PS2 to begin with! If we were in immideate vicinity of eachother, i'd smack you across the face.

I don't want to imply that one of two great 3D platformer series is better than other (because either one is as good as another), but i am convinced that having them both on that list is waaaaay more important than having three stealth games on it!
I've tackled both Ratchet & Clank and my feelings on having PS2 exclusives for the sake of it previously: I adore R&C like any sane person should, but I think Jak 3 just edges ahead. And as for Hitman, it's a series I feel doesn't get quite enough respect, and some of my most entertaining moments came from Blood Money.

Let me repeat my feelings on exclusives: the 6th generation was nearly as multiplatform game-ridden as the 7th is shaping up to be, and so many of the best titles were made for everybody that looked like a profitable market. Even my beloved TimeSplitters 2 is on Xbox and GameCube, but neither opposing version controls in the same perfect way I'm used to. A great game is always a great game, and an exclusive is not necessaarily mind-blowing. Killzone, anyone? Love where love is due.

And so what if my 3 fave stealth games are on the list? They're all completely different and equally incredible in their own way, so if I love 'em, I put 'em in. I'm starting to repeat myself now, so let's just leave it at that and stay neutral, eh? :D

I saw the Jak and Dexter game, and while never playing it, I wonder, what did you think of Rachet and Clank (if I missed it somewhere just point it out), but I thought it was a quirky game that was realistic in a cartoony way, fun and wacky and just silly, but never stop being fun

Not that I'm blaming you or anything, but Ratchet & Clank has been mentioned a few times now in this thread, and I sum up my opinion on it like so: wonderful series, but it all feels so similar after a while and Jak just has the edge over it.

I figured it might have, but with 4 pages of posts, finding it would be a little difficult, especially when I'm in class when on the forums.

Now you got me wanting to try the Jak games, because I loved Ratchet and Clank, so a game said by a hardcore PS2 fan to be better than it must be worth giving it a shot, as soon as I get extra money since I'm moving out.

I do agree with Burnout 3 btw, rented it from work (for free) and just had a blast. I'm not a fan of racing games, but I liked Burnout because it didn't have cars that were indestructible, but were flimsy, and bashing a car and seeing it in slow motion was quite fun. Though while I adore Burnout 3, I fear for playing Paradise, because it's open ended, and I don't see high speed take outs as fun on a non-linear course

Though I have to ask, you say you like God of War II, but also the 1st, so would it be safe to say you enjoy God of War as a franchise? Or would God of War sit under all the other games on the list? Same with the other Jak games, would it be Jak 3 sits above the others, or would you put all of them in you list and list it as a franchise?

If you like Ratchet & Clank, then Jak is an obvious series to try. Even if you don't end up prefering it, I'd imagine that you'll at least like it considerably. Start with the first one and see how it goes.

You're right about Paradise: takedowns and free-roaming aren't perfectly compatible. I was surprised that it worked well at all, but the traditional track-based structure is definitely better. It seems logical that specifically designed levels might work better than open-ended hubs where random crashes occur with no pattern, but Paradise is by no means broken, just somewhat misguided.

Finally, I did the sensible thing with my list and forced myself to pick one game from a series. Had it been any other way, all the TimeSplitters would have gone in, along with both God of Wars. That's half the list right there! No, that would be silly. Plus I think that if I love a game lots and lots, the natural assumption is that I might like the other games in the series as well, though that's not a certainty. By the same logic, if I hate one Tomb Raider game, I probably hate them all. And whadya know, I DO hate every Tomb Raider title ever devised! The system works!

Again, I apologize if this was already covered, but I've only played the 2nd installment and enjoyed it, though heard the others were lacking compared. Also, Resident Evil series, do you put RE4 in the same place as the others?

One thing I notice is that there are a lot of games out there that had great starts, but in sequels, get too crazy. They also seem to squeeze sequels out. God of War (I) ended with a definate ending, but in God of War II they technically contradict the ending of the 1st by HAVING a sequel...and while I enjoy it so much, and I'm excited for GoWIII, I can't help but think of how they squeeze sequels out of games...

Also, agree with you on Timesplitters 2. Got it as a gift, had that stealth element in the 1st section down to a science almost, played it so much and loved every second of it, plus burning snowmen in multi-player was such a joy I could do it all day ^^ A strong single-player game with a powerful multi-player experience for sure

I've barely touched Silent Hill as a franchise due to my being a natural coward of considerable levels, and though Resident Evil 4 is by far and away the best in its series I've played (due to the long-overdue removal of those goddamn tank controls), I still think of it as a fun shooter which was held back by pretentions of being a horror game, which it really really isn't. Cowardly old me wasn't intimidated, and the still annoying controls, though vastly better than before, make for a regularly frustrating experience.

God of War II did undermine the original's ending a bit, but made up for that by dialling up the already stupendous action to 11, giving us many more of those lovely boss fights to hammer our way through, and concluding on the most awesomely over-the-top cliffhanger in any game I've ever finished. GOW3 is easily my most anticipated next-gen game to date, and the PS3 would probably appreciate having some dust blown off it.

And anyone who loves TimeSplitters 2 is an automatical friend for life in my book. What a gift to receive! I hope you gave the giver something of comparable value, like a gold brick. What's your opinion on Future Perfect, may I ask? Overall do you prefer it to #2 or not?

I'm very satisfied and flattered at your adoption of my piece, and intend to keep popping back to that page to see what your followers think of both it and the PS2 itself. I'm completely inexperienced with the idea of "renting out" my work like this, but you've been quite the gentleman about it, so kudos to you.

And this is nothing to do with you, friend, but I've just realised that NOBODY in this thread has mentioned the whole 2001: A Space Odyssey thing at the end of the article. The joke is that the iconic obelisk is, in fact, the PS2! Perhaps everyone's noticed and just not said anything, but I thought everyone would jump on it. Sigh.

I spotted it at first, and lol'd when I saw the url for it too.

Also: If ever you have an article of some kind you'd like to have posted more than just here, I'd gladly let you post more stuff on my site. (It'd be nice for SOMEONE to update it, like I ever do lol )

Where is the Ace Combat appreciation in these forums? I can't really list a top 10 as I don't remember much about PS2 and I seemed to have missed out on many games as well but I will say that the Ace Combat games (04 specifically) were my favorites as well as Star Wars Battlefront and GTA.

Oh, I wouldn't feel right exploiting someone's generocity like that. Besides, I've never done anything a fifth as monumental as this before, and probably won't for ANOTHER ten years. Most of the time I just do the odd review of a less than new game which not everyone's heard of, and stuff like that is fine here. Thanks for the offer, but unless I do another titantic-proportioned piece sometime soon, I must respectfully decline your proposal in favour of my humble Escapist position.

Unless you insist on having all 30+ of my multiple-page reviews and rants on your site, I would recommend against extending a permanent olive branch towards me.

But I'm not a brick wall on the subject, and a consistent readership would be awesome. For now, let's just see what your people think of my Magnum Opus before considering expansion, okay?

I'll be in touch.

My readership aren't always very vocal, but they read (when I update) and I would, of course, cherrypick what I wanted to run, but uploading your articles cost me nothing beyond a few minutes of my time, as I'm running the server regardless. Anyway, don't want to de-rail the thread, and I've said my piece, so if you need me, PM's.

Sorry, but I've never played it, and therefore can say nothing about it.

I've just thought of another game which I nearly added but didn't due to its extreme brevity: Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner. Much like Shadow of the Colossus, The Second Runner provides an almost flawless experience while it lasts, and would have nothing sigificantly wrong with it if not for the very short campaign, although I think Zone of the Enders is a bit more replayable than SOTC, especially with some fun unlockables and nice 2 player duelling mode.

It's another thing that wound up in my "maybe" pile, but lost to more substantial offerings as Urban Chaos and Splinter Cell.
