I'd give my kid a Nintendo 64. That's what I grew up on, and it has fantastic games, Golden Eye, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Mario Kart, games that should be played by every generation.

Plus, I would never give my kid a game that he could play online on. I'm a firm believer that no kid under the age of 15 should ever be allowed to play online games, because they annoy the crap out of me, and virtually any adult that's playing.
HEY im 14 and i play online but i realize now that i can do that because i have shaken off my 10 year old voice and also my 12 year old voice of constant cracking so i believe there should be a rule that until you sound like a guy and not a girl online you cant play with a head set

I don't think it's necessarily the girly whining sound that's the problem.

Hm... the Wii

Due to having the Virtual Console which covers a few of your options, and also allowing the kid some freedom in his choices, rather then being a douche of a dictatorial father figure trying to force his own Nostalgia Tinted view of entertainment perfection thus potentially destroying someone else's childhood.

What does PS2 fit in? You're kind of skipping a generation or two.

Well, PS2, because all my favorite games as a kid are on that wonderful box of plastic and circuits. Battlefront, Battlefront 2, uhm... Gran Turismo 3... other stuff?

Honestly, all I pretty much did with my PS2 was Battlefront and Battlefront 2, until I got God of War. But the hours I clocked with those two games...

In that case you're discriminating against female gamers. My dislike of children online isn't the fact that they have high voices, since I regularly game with a few female friends, but the fact that you don't have to mental maturity to be playing with adults.

Who does the most trash talking during games? Kids, usually between the ages of 12 and 14 (from my experience). Who has the shittiest tactics, and are always too stubborn to change how they play in order to benefit the team? Again, kids between the ages of 12 and 14. This trend continues.

I figure you only become mature enough to play a videogame online, once the law has deemed that you're old enough to be encased in 2 tons of metal, with gallons of flammable liquid, in a projectile that is capable of traveling over 100 miles an hour. Until such a time, these children have not reasonably learned responsibility, and should not be allowed to play an online game, especially an online game that is rated M and meant for adults.
I actually play with girls on Xbox live all the time but you are right mostly 12 to 14 year olds are the trash talkers thats why i don't bother trash talking EVER! Its dumb because i dont know the person and its just a cop out to never having to talk to the person again so you can say what ever you want and its then that kids 5-14 are usually trash talking assholes i agree completely

Yeah, I don't play online, but from what I've heard it's immature morons who shout insults at each other and make racist/homophobic remarks. Sure, older people do those things too, but you're more likely to hear it from younger players, I imagine.

Don't worry... there's more than one kind of maturity in my book, and only one is important. I'm 23 and still pretty immature in some ways (who knows how old I'll be before I stop finding farting funny?), but I know how to be grown-up when necessary ;)

Of course. Not all the 'Youth of Today' are the same, eh? And true, I imagine that a human without a shred of immaturity would be very dull indeed.

I just had to find out. If you had to choose one console, and that could be the kids ONLY console until he could afford another himself or move out, which one would you choose? It can be from any era of gaming.

I asked most of my friends, and most agreed on the old 2D games for NES or SNES because they believe this generation is spoiled by next-gen graphics.
I don't think you could buy a kid anything else other than a Next Gen console, I mean sure you can say peer pressure is crap, but then again try explaining that to a kid who doesn't understand why you've given him a console and games he can now play in his browser or on an emulator whilst his mates are playing "insert suitable popular game here"

I don't believe violent games create violent players, but I do think the current gen consoles have specific age groups.

Wii, is clearly the choice for a child between X-13
13+ Xbox 360 or PS3

SNES for sure..it had such a great library of games and more emphasis on playing the game rather than throwing graphics in our face to distract us from a games craptitude

Rather than force upon the kid a system of my choosing (which would be a Playstation and/or PC), I'd wait until they were old enough to decide for themselves what kind of gamer they want to be. I would expose him/her to all the genres of gaming: FPS, RPG, action, strategy, puzzle, racing, etc. Then it's just a matter of what they like, and what system will satisfy those personal tastes.

That may seem like a cop-out to the poll, but it's not about what I want. It's what my child will enjoy the most, and what we'll have the most fun with as a father/son or father/daughter team. And if I can get my wife involved in the experience, all the better.
