I'd give 'em a PS1. My sisters dad had one, and it's what I played from age three until ten. While all my mates were playin' GTA3 on their PS2s, I was like "fuck you guys, I'm playin' Silent Hill". To this day it has some of the best games around (or concepts, at least), and it's generally not as disturbingly difficult as the NES/SNES games tended to be. I still play it as often as my 360.

For a second I thought the thread title was "Raping a kid on a console". I must have a very dark sense of humor because all I could think of was "Since when did Catholic Priests own Xboxes?"

OT: An old playstation 3 with backwards compatibility.

I'd give my kid a Nintendo 64. That's what I grew up on, and it has fantastic games, Golden Eye, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Mario Kart, games that should be played by every generation.

Plus, I would never give my kid a game that he could play online on. I'm a firm believer that no kid under the age of 15 should ever be allowed to play online games, because they annoy the crap out of me, and virtually any adult that's playing.

....so thats 3 out of every 4 games just about?

really just because it annoys you, doesn't mean it should be banned or outlawed, there is this simple thing called a mute button, if you are really that annoyed by a kid on a game

anyways OT:

probably the wii or n64, i would show him/her which games were my favorites as a kid and why and i'd be sure to have them try one goodie from each genre to get a feel for what they might like, then once i'd seen them beat some games and really get a feel for things i'd take em to a game store and let them buy a few used games (i'd semi supervise their purchases to make sure they aren't complete crap games)

I'd go with the PS3, because I'm loving it right now. I can use it to explain the history of gaming, about how the format wars occured, the console wars, how HD TV came to be implemented.

And all the while (s)he'll sit there going "Whatever Dad" and plug that cable back into their head for some form of intense gaming.

Its between the NES and SNES for me. The SNES has so many classic games that I cant look back to without breaking down in tears, and it was the very first console I ever touched. But the NES had the power of creativity. The NES was exploited to its limits to get the best result possible, and those games were hard too! To this day, I cant spend a day without my fix of Contra. And Super Contra. And Chrono Trigger. An Castlevania. And Mario. And Kirby. And Battle Toads. I could go on forever. Why isn't the PS1 in the poll? I need to write down moar games!

No wonder I barely have any free time in my day.

I'd let my kid have a Wii. I might let them play my console, but I'm going to be very strict about what I let my kid play.

N64, of course. I myself grew up on on'a those things, and I can still remember how happy I was playing its consistently above average quality games (Except fricking Starshot)
Remember that one donkey kong game? With the yellow cartridge? Mmm that was a good game.

The 360 or the PS2... the main reason people like old consoles is because of nostalgia... I grew up on Pajama Sam, but I know that it's not the greatest game ever invented. Times they are a'changin' and whether you like it or not, Gears of War is a better game than anything on the Atari 2600... apologies if I insulted anyone.

I say the SNES as that was the first system I played and it has great games. I would want my kid(s) to enjoy and understand the classics (Mario and such). Kinda like what they do in English. They have you read or watch the classics to appreciate, understand, and know what people mean when they mention them.

N64

I'd treat it like a board game, they get to play it with other people face to face. That way they get good at gaming and they learn social crap at the same time. Although Conker and Perfect Dark are off limits.
Noooo! perfect dark was the best n64 game. Plus you could turn on paint-ball mode!

I'd get him a 360 so we could game together and have our own Live accounts. Of course, I'd teach him not to be an ignorant little shit and a competent player.

I'd pick the SNES. If not, I'd pick the Wii cause you can buy the older games through Virtual Console. I DID grow up on the NES more or less, and I DO enjoy those games very much, but many of those games I enjoyed had a sequel or two on the SNES.. so I'd have to stick with it.

I'd give him a console so he could play with friends, and then I'd tell him the benefits of PC gaming and how in my opinion it is better than a console. If then he decides he wants a PC, I'd help him make one. If not, he can play on console.

Well I'd raise my kid as a PC kid. But if I had to choose one of them, I would go with th Atari 2600. I dunno whats good, I just randomly selected one.

I'd get them an N64, one because it is one of the best consoles out there, and two because it has enough games to keep them entertained for a long time.
