The non-mainstream stuff is alright.
I am mostly into Hard Rock/Metal though.
Nas is the only artist I like alot.

Finally! Look Ares Tyr, a brotha who did it right. He don't like it, but he doesn't say it is crap.crazy-j post=18.71319.779655 said:I don't give a flying monkey shit for rap.
I enjoy tons of different music. I listen almost exclusively to metal, but I also am very capable of enjoying blues, jazz, funk, various forms of electronic music, and some orchestral stuff, whatever movements that may include. Metal is not exclusively dumb garbage like Metallica, KoRn, Slipknot, Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, etc., just as I know there is rap people consider better than 50 Cent and whoever else is popular in the mainstream these days (I really don't follow it).zen5887 post=18.71319.779735 said:Really.. When people say they like Metal you can almost guess they hate everything else (I know thats not always the case but most of the time). There is no point trying to explain the talent required to make a hit rap song to these guys, likewise there is no point trying to convince metalheads that a lot of their stuff is a joke

I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, but okay. I still like Johnny Cash and think he is talented.zen5887 post=18.71319.779735 said:PS: Ares there is very little talent in country music. I play in a country band and it is really.. really... reaaaally simple

The difference I see between something like metal and rap is that rap is based entirely on a certain type of vocal delivery and drum/bass groove. Although there's a huge number of variations on that, if I can't stand those basic components, then those supplementary elements are meaningless to me. With metal, what is there? Drums? Distorted guitars? Power chords? Aside from maybe a few pieces, such as the instruments used, there's very little connecting most forms of metal, at least nothing that doesn't exist in other forms of rock music; if anything, the overarching theme that defines metal has to do more with ideology and aesthetics than the music, though the music itself is still quite important. Thrash metal sounds very different from traditional heavy metal, with death metal, black metal, etc. even further removed. Therefore, I find it silly to reject metal as a whole, especially on the basis of even several examples from different sub-genres; the amount of variation present is incredible, to the point where there are non-metal bands like Ulver which are considered to be part of the metal scene, or Fejd, which is basically folk metal without the metal elements (i.e. electric guitars).
I don't profess to be familiar with what I'm sure are the many sub-genres of rap music, but I've never heard rap without rapping. Does it exist? I get the impression that it becomes a completely different style of music when that happens. Therefore, I don't feel uncomfortable saying I strongly dislike all rap like I do with some other genres.
That's the general consensus for anyone who remembers what the genre was originally about. Its become oversaturated and commercialized to the extent that hacks like Soulja Boy can literally glance at any object (ex. his Sidekick,) add in a few hypocritical cliches of sex and violence (he once claimed to be a family-friendly rapper) then muse over his own fame to make a "song." What we hear today IS NOT RAP. True rap recycled pieces of other genres and forms of entertainment to become innovative. What we hear today is greedy hacks wanting a fast ticket to the good life yet claim they represent the 'hood even when they're from the suburbs. It's come to the point that rappers aren't competing with rappers over typical rivalries, but who's bastardized the genre.RTR post=18.71319.719672 said:TOdays rap just can't live up to what people listened to in the 80's. That rap could be defended at an intellectual level, but today's rap is impossible to defend. Just ask Chris Rock (I am aware he's a comedian, not a rapper.)
Hip Hop without rapping is very common, just not in mainstream music. It's just a DJ composing and mixing a beat like a techno artist. It's really awesome. Look up Invisibl Skratch Piklz and The X-Ecutioners.zen5887 post=18.71319.785717 said:Wow!searanox post=18.71319.779841 said:I enjoy tons of different music. I think the differences in rap are a lot more subtle. I've heard people talking about hating east coast rap and liking west coast. I can only assume the diffrence is lyrical content, with stuff comming from the bronx being more 'hard' then the stuff comming from LA (dont quote me.. just a theory). Again I can assume there are subtle diffrences in the musical styling, a certain style of rap/hip hop might use a live band over a drum machine, another style might focus on using jazz samples exclusivly (that would be aweosme!).
My guess is these styles are easyer to pick when you into it. Someone who isnt into metal might not be able to tell the diffrence between Metallica and Iron Maiden just as people not into hip hop cant tell the diffrence between east and west coast. Having said that I agree with you in that metal is a big genre, there is a big diffrence between grindcore and tech.
I've heard some hip hop stuff with blues, country, folk and bluegrass backing bands. I've heard a hip hop song with only a harpsichord playing and I've heard a hip hop concept album about this guy living on a houseboat. Theres some pretty intresting stuff around deep underground but thats the same for any genre, if your not into it you wont want to go looking.
I think that rap/hip hop without rapping comes under the spoken word genre but if it keeps the beats, samples and scratching it still comes under rap/hip hop.. Maybe.
Question for Searanox: What do you of rapmetal/rapcore/nu metal?
I hate it. I hate it all. It's a combination of the two worst things in music: rap and -core.zen5887 post=18.71319.785717 said:Question for Searanox: What do you of rapmetal/rapcore/nu metal?
