I would do my best to kill the thug with whatever is at hand. I don't think I could ever live with myself knowing someone was raped and I could have tried to stop it. I personally think that if you wouldn't try to help someone in that situation, then you need to adjust your morals in life. There are some things people should be willing to fight for, and their are others people should be willing to die for.

[This doesn't necisarilly mean the elderly or the very young, but if you are able bodied, then you should help someone in need.

*shrug* Murder is worse than rape. Moreover, I'm not inclined to sacrifice myself for a stranger any time soon.

There have been many threads that pose the question of whether rape is worse than murder. Mulling over this today I came to the conclusion that these threads usually have unlikely or no circumstances involved. So I began to think about the idea with more realistic circumstances.

I came up with a situation where you are walking home late one night, and hear someone in distress nearby. You look down an alleyway you just passed and see the victim at the knife point of the rapist who is undressing them with his other hand (so you know he plans to rape them). Consider yourself to be the average person, you aren't carrying weapons or anything to improvise as one, you do not know martial arts, attempting to save the person would be very risky.

In these circumstances what would you do? I have set up the polls so that you must select whether you would normally vote for murder/rape being worse, and what you would do in THIS situation. Consider your "normal" vote to be on a circumstanceless 'rape vs murder' poll.

Sorry if I reply to this thread slow, I may not visit the escapist again until tomorrow. Provide me with some great discussion to read by then. ;)
Grabbing a man by the testicles and squeezing prevents him from stabbing due to the immense pain. So yeah, I guess I'd do that.

I figure that whatever mental trauma comes with rape pales in comparison to being dead (Most cases). However depending on the size of the guy (strong muscular type or bald, fat, with a low self esteem) I would probably at least risk fighting him if there is an opportunity to get away or get the attention of someone else nearby.

You can't compare one of those crimes to another. They're both 2 different things altogether and neither can be classed as worse than the other.

The question of which is worse has the problem that it doesn't really define what "worse" means. If it's about how much harm it causes to the person who experiences it, I would say that murder is worse. I know treating rape like it's anything less than a very serious matter is horrible, but at the same time, treating it as if it's worse than death is hardly any better to victims. It's like telling them "Well, you might as well go ahead and kill yourself, because you've just lost any chance you have of living a fulfilling life."

If it's about how bad the actual act of committing the crime, rape is clearly worse. Murder is bad, but it's something a fairly decent person could end up doing in an extreme situation. I can still possibly look at a murderer as a fellow human. The same can't be said for a rapist.

Someone's in trouble, if I can find a brick, dustbin or something else to sneak up on the guy with...

Maybe the criminal would run, maybe he wouldn't, I couldn't really tell you.

Well, feel free to try with the annihilation, heh; rapists and murders deserve little else (though murder has a few cases of exception, of course, like self defense, defense of others, defense of property, etc, etc. And a few cases would probably deserve less than a lethal sentence, like consented mercy killings).
I can't understand these people who call others less-than-human even though these criminal's actions are the epitome of human extremes in emotion and mental states.

Personally I think anyone who would put personal safety above the right thing to do is a little too into themselves
How would you sleep at night knowing you could have done something to prevent a horrible crime and didn't?
Also, rape's probably worse though murder is a little more abrupt. Where murder is an end to all things it doesn't really cause that much anguish to the victim. They're dead what difference does it make. A rape has further reaching consequences simply because the person is still alive to deal with it.
My opinion any ways

You can't recover from being murdered so it's worse.

I would kill the son of a *****, monsters like that don't deserve to live.

Why is rape so traumatic? i mean, if im walking down an alley and some girl grabs me holds a gun to my head and starts giving me head or something, id be surprised and a little uneasy about the gun, but...isnt sex...good? i can understand the whole getting pregnant, or gay rape, but..you know what i mean? someone please educate me.

Now I'm no expert so don't quote me on this, but I think most rapists are straight males. To a girl who is being forced to have sex, I doubt they'd enjoy it. I guess you're just not expecting it and the sudden shock of your life threatened traumatizes you. Also, they're just not in the right mindset to have sex, especially against their will. It's kinda hard for us guys to picture, but I can imagine how scary it would be to be held against your will, especially if the girl is still a virgin. That's just my opinion however.

How is rape worse then murder?!? I can't believe so many people think that. No matter how bad rape is, you can always kill yourself if that's what you really want.
I said rape is worse than murder. My reasoning behind it is that instead of looking at the results, I look at the motive behind the crime. Rape has only one motive, a very disgusting, despicable motive. Murder isn't that simple...it can be done for revenge, justice, financial gain, etc. And to me, none of those seem as bad as a rapist's motive.

Same here, I think I might end up getting raped as well. -3- However, I am a lot stronger than I look so I would (probably) be able to use the element of surprise and actually beat the shit out of the rapist. First a call to the police though and maybe for some back-up as well (= friends, a nearby house etc).

Perhaps, but motive only plays a small part in the court of law. If you murder someone, you deserve 20 years at least, unless it was in self defense or the defense of another. If you rape someone you deserve at least 10 years and maybe psychiatric help as well.

Wait, Why are so many people saying rape is worse than murder? If you're raped you're left with psychological trauma. You can GET OVER that. You cant recover from being dead!

Example: My mother was molested as a child (true story btw). That haunted her for years, but she's fine now. she's got two children, has a nice job,and is sitting in the next room laughing. Would it have been better if he had killed her?

Also, I would use something nearby (rock or something) and use it to beat the crap out of the rapist. Hopefully I'll either knock him out or he'll run. Afterwards I'll call the police. Or maybe I'd just call the police and scream "I just called the police" at the rapist. Depends on my mood at the time.

What motive are you talking about? Wanting to get off? Because murders happen because of that too.
