I have only seen my dad cry once in my 19 years of existence, and that was when his dad died. I have cried twice myself when my grandfather died and when the dog i have had my whole life died.

I don't see a problem with it as long as you aren't a blubbering pussy about it. Last time I cried was at the funeral for a fellow firefighter. Right before he was lowered into the ground, everyone's pagers went off and said "This is the last call for Fire Chief Tom Dickensheets." Yeah, I lost it then.

I think a "real man" doesn't sneer or laugh at a man who is crying. It usually takes a lot to upset me but when I do cry then there's something seriously wrong/genuine reason to be upset.

I never like the slightly over-testosterone mentality of us guys growing up, how we shouldn't cry and a long list of what a "real man" is all about. It's slightly archaic in my book and we shouldn't have to conform to ridiculous standards of what a bloke should and shouldn't do.

Same thing goes for women too; I hate the tired stereotype of a kitchen home maker and damsel in distress. I know a few girls that cry far less than us guys even! We all make our own choices and shouldn't be thought less of that, even if under emotional pressure forces us to "burst open the floodgates" What else are we meant to do?

I put possibly. If you cry at everything then you probably need to go talk to someone. But the "right" circumstances can be anything really. A moving song, a sad movie, death of a pet or loved one, human suffering (I'm including being taken to see any Twilight movie in this one), accidentally hammering your thumb rather than a nail...

No but then again I have a different idea of what a real man is. In terms of the common concept of real men I tend to say the words "real men" in the same tone that I would say "contestants on Big Brother".

Real men cry when it's justifiable to do so.

Reasons for which crying would be justifiable are when you lose a close relative, your home, when Sarah Palin becomes elected to a public office, and so on and so forth.

Reasons for which it would not be justifiable to cry are, for example, when you want people to leave Britney alone, or when you drop some of the fine China.

Id you're crying at a sad ending to a film. Then there's something wrong with you. Even if you're a woman it's still wrong.

If you're crying at your mothers funeral then that's normal.
What is wrong with empathy?
Empathy for someone in real life is fine.

Empathy for fake characters is a little.... Odd.
Not when fictional characters represent real emotion.
Emphasis on fictional

They're not real. Why feel sad for them?
Because they represent real emotion, empathy doesn't stop at personal connection. Have you ever felt emotion when watching a film?

This is not a question of whether or not I can distinguish fiction from reality, I simply like to be immersed in the work of fiction I happen to be involved in. Isn't that the point of enjoying fiction in the first place?
There's a difference between immersion and caring enough to get upset.

If you understand that the characters aren't real then it's illogical to get upset about what happens to them.
When the movie ends I feel no emotion for the characters, but when I am watching the movie, for that 1.5-2.5 hours the movie is my reality. I guess it's just a hard thing to convey...

My tears and emotions are primal, bestial, animalistic. I got no shame. Of course some things just desensitize you and others just make me bawl like a madonna;like I broke a dozen bones in my body, not a single drop. but seeing a kid in a morgue (my old job) just was way too much for me.

Only the most badass of men are able to cry in public.

Like when at the movies.

Watching Toy Story 3.
I'd be worried if you didn't cry at that. More so Up actually.

Good Lord...

Real men are the ones who don't cry over everything.....but given the right situation and context are not thought any less of if they do cry.

For instance:

On a TV show a family had lost two of their sons to a degenerative heart disease and they had to watch them slowly waste away and die.
The mother and duaghter readily cried and mourned the loss of the sons, but the father (This guy was built like a lighthouse) Didn't cry and/or mourn.
They came onto a tv show (can't remember the name) and after a long talk the father finally cracked and let loose a few tears and then back stage actually began to cry.

No one in the audience thought any less of the guy who was understandably upset.

In short what I'm trying to say is that a real man is someone who is tough enough not to cry over any small thing yet can and will cry in a life changing situation like this.

I would rather cry it out than snap which is better than crying then snapping, although one does not know if one is going to snap until after one has cried. So basically, it's a waiting game.

Holding in your emotions for too long is never a good idea.

I've had a couple of depression attacks/meltdowns in the past few weeks right in the middle of work because I probably can't hold it in anymore.

That said, it is a good idea to keep it discreet.

Crying is a natural response to a incredible sadness!

Crying for men is completely ALRIGHT!

For instance just a month ago i had to put my dog down and i cried...

My dog was with me nearly every day for over 13 years! He was a massive part of my life of course i would cry!

Or when my grandma died 2 years ago again she was a massive part of my life and i was VERY SAD for quite some time!

Its OK for men to cry! It a way of release if you dont find some way to express those pent up emotions it can lead to sickness and even mental instability.

However a man that crys at every little thing like if he runs out of gas on the highway or breaks a nail or some BS like that.. Then i think that is a little annoying...

But i would say the same too a women that crys over those things as well!
