For me it's Mass Effect.
The superiour voice acting elevates it a bit over all the others.
And ME1 is the only RPG I immediately replayed after my first playthrough.

Huh, a thousand posts, I R ze spam.

Either Fallout or The Elder Scrolls.

I can't choose between them. I just can't!

How long until we get into a discussion of "_________ is hardly an RPG at all! It waters down the __________ and focuses too much on ___________"?

Blahdeddy blerg.

My favorite is Mass Effect. I really enjoy stepping into the role of Commander Shepard. It's an incredibly immersive experience.
Mass Effect is hardly an RPG at all! It waters down the Role Playing Elements and focuses too much on the gun fighting action.
Blahdeddy blerg.

OT: Mine is Mass Effect, I'm a huge fan of it.
Hey, I made a Mad Lib. I'm gonna do it the way I did it when I was nine.

Butt Sniffers 8 is hardly an RPG at all! It waters down the Stench Detection Upgrade System and focuses too much on fecal matter.
Blahdeddy blerg.

Now that I've gotten my immature act of the day out of the way, I'm going to go read a Wall Street Journal or something...

Planescape Torment I think would qualify as the greatest RPG I've ever played. As for a series, it would go either to the Fallout series(FO1,FO2,FO:NV) or Baldur's Gate(BG1,BG2,TOB). Can't decide...

It's a dreadful sin to mix these to franchises in an list, it's not fair game to choose between them.

Ok now this is starting to get annoying so I guess it must be said. ALL JRPGS ARE JUST THE SAME PRE-PUBESCENT KIDS SAVING THE PLANET WITH THE SAME BASIC PREMISE OF A LOVE INTEREST AND A DOPEY SIDE KICK. If you feel otherwise or if you feel WRPGs are the same way be free to create your own topic but dont just come in here and start acting all smug like I just forgot about JRPGs. I dont like them and I dont hate them. I just dont want anything to do with them.

Well I'd choose Mass Effect for your list, but my favourite RPG series is KoTOR. I like the Pokemon series too, but I haven't played too many RPG's since it's not really my thing.

I said Fallout 3 perhaps it's because I haven't played the others or that I enjoyed the theme of trying to survive after nuclear war but meh I voted for it

Eh, I like the old CRPGs best. Arcanum is still probably tops for me, despite its flaws.
That was my first thought too. But technically, Arcanum isn't a series so I voted Mass Effect. after that it could be a toss up for either Fallout, Baldur's Gate, or Earthbound (Mother) would be next in line I think.

I can't really believe Diablo is a consideration. I haven't played 3 yet, but I didn't think it was an rpg.

Even though I love Fallout 3 I didn't play 1, 2 so I can't say that one. And as much as I like the elder scrolls series I've never finished a one.

My vote goes to Wizardry.
yeah, Diablo is very much an rpg. Some elements of WoW came from the Diablo series, to the point that they're called the same thing in both games.
I don't think I would classify Diablo as an RPG either. It has always been more of a treasure hunting game to me. I would classify it as adventure/treasure hunting over RPG. The answer is pretty much "click on it" to everything. I think it plays more like a platformer actually than an RPG. Part 1 may be closer to RPG than 2 but 2 really went a different direction emphasizing trasure hunting with respawns and the level of the crafting. (Extensive rune words, gem combinations, etc.) ANd 3 is reporting to ty and take this treasure hunting aspect even higher. Which I am fully supportive of as it is nice to see a new possible genre pop up here. Lord knows I hate those point and click treasure games that are out there now. Personally, I think diablo 2 sets outside of the current contemperary genre realm. But if I had to pick one I would put it in action adventure... or point and click adventure. But definatley adventure and not RPG. But I claim it as "treasure hunter" genre. Where the point of the game is to seek out good drops and the drop rates get more attention from players than anything else.

I would consider the "Treasure Hunter" genre as a subgenre of rpg. (Controls really have no bearing on whether it's an rpg or not, just whether or not it's role-playing)

Well, I would love to say the Mass Effect series, but I can't really since it's not an RPG series. It's a (somewhat light) RPG followed by a third-person shooter. I wonder what genre the third game will be?

This was a tough call. As a huge sci-fi nerd I really loved Mass Effect, but I have to go with Fallout by a slim margin. There's just something about the contrast between the sunny happy-go-lucky "Motorama Future" vision, and the horrors of nuclear devastation that speaks to me. Fallout 3 also made two MST3K references, so that helped sway me, too.

Mass Effect isn't an RPG it's a damn movie.

From your list, I pick Baldur's Gate (2)

Never figured out what "Baldur's Gate" actually was though.

I see how you get there I would just put it as a subgenre of adventure though myself. Everything about the game is linear including the exploration. I mean you can spend stat points and stuff and that is something but the real focus of customization is in the gear or the loot. Plus I am of the mindset that in order for it to be role playing, you need to have the ability to not play that role. We could say this is more of a dungeon crawler than RPG which is what RPG's spawned from. But to classify dungeon crawlers as RPGs is really pushing the grey area here to me. As it became something different and distinguished when it seperated, the key word being seperated.

Fans calculate insane number crunches on drop rates and shop generation and minimal math skills are required to fight anything in front of you. I mean to the point of generalization and estimates. But loot is where the formulas show up and effort is poored into in the community. Something doesn't sit right with me placing Diablo along side Baldur's Gate or Mass Effect. As they offer a more immersive environment that the player interacts with and defines himself through. IN Diablo, there is no need to really talk to anyone but the average town run involves, Indentify through Cain, weapon/armor merchant visit to sell, MAYBE potion guy, go back. No dialogue is needed. SO much to the fact that the game forces you to listen to key parts upon contact of an NPC. But dialogue in the game is more along the lines of those strange facts scattered throughout Maxim. You can ignore them the whole game and are mostly there for entertainment than anything else. If you ever enter the screen that says:

"Talk"
"XXXX"
"XXXX"
"Goodbye"

You know that talking to them will reveal nothing. You can exit out of that and not talk to them and it would be the same as talking to them. Initiating Dialogue in Diablo is not needed. It is simply aesthetic. It is probably a TomAto-Tomato situation though in all honesty. I am just saying that I don't see it as clearly an RPG.

You, sir, have excellent taste. And I'm not just saying that because you ninja'd my exact words.
