Depending on how accurate the information they have on you is, and how much co-operation they have from other government institutions, it's not hard for them to track your home and cell phone internet use... especially since the patriot act.
Not that I'm condoning such a thing. I mean, they have every right to know what you do on their connection, but on something you (or your parents, I suppose) are paying for...

Excuse me, I think that's the FBI at my door again.

People cyberbully because of this:

But this sometimes happens:

I think cyberbullying is worse because many times you are helpless to stop it. At least in actual bullying, you can defend yourself by fighting him or her. Bullying online goes way further than just "Haha! Your mother wears army boots!" Motherfuckers on 4chan are insane with what they are able to do to people they are willing to attack.

Most of the time, you just have to grow a pair and ignore that stuff. But some are emotionally fragile and can't shake it.

They're likely doing it through school issued laptops, etc. If so, don't use one. If they're forcing the students to allow them to be friends with them on facebook, then they can STFU.

But this is pretty standard.

I don't really understand the first post. Couldn't you just buy yourself a laptop for yourself, and go home with it, and use it? I mean, you said they can track you "all the time".

It's not like your school can track what you do on the internet while at home using the laptop you bought on the internet connection your parents/you are paying for, can they?

That seems like a violation of every privacy and ownership law ever made.

The same policy applies at my job. If you use a company computer, then your history is saved and emailed directly to either me or the manager in your sector, where we review it, and if we find any offensive stuff[footnote]AKA porn, hate websites, racist or sexist material, excessive screwing around when you're supposed to be working, etc etc[/footnote] then we forward it along to the higher-ups, who take appropriate action.

You don't like it? It's not your computer, do that stuff on your own time. When you're on company time, then use computers only for work related activities.

Sound harsh? Maybe. But we've caught two of our employee's trying to post on Craigslist about selling stolen company property, we've also caught one guy who was trying to sell illegal drugs. So it's worth it to me.

Cyber bullying is so stupid. I hate people who over react over it, because I got tried as an adult for a stupid little thing I did when I was eleven, so I'm biased against people who cry "cyber bullying is worse than real bullying!!".

Bullying is part of teenage, and childhood, society, and CANNOT be prevented, and adults don't realize this. With all these, "See these kids killed themselves, we have to stop it!" campaigns, speeches and the like, teenagers, (well where I live) get more fed up with the bullshit and continue to pick on each other.

If a kid is weird, people are gonna isolate him and tease him. It's just natural. End of story.

Schools stalking their students is just plain wrong and inhumane. Breaching someone's privacy, under no circumstances besides criminal reasons, (I.e.: Wanted by the FBI, CIA etc.) and should not be allowed. Even teachers adding kids on Facebook is wrong; unless of course, you're in college/ are an adult and had a favorite teacher you got along well with.

I try not to make people choose between extremes but I have to wonder your opinion:
(short for TL;DR people) It has recently come to my attention that after a decision to 'crack down' on cyber-bullying my school's authorities have decided to monitor each and every one of students' contributions to anything that can be accessed with a computer and a modem; this means that they have full access to private messages and posts on anything from Facebook to Deviantart, removing any illusion of privacy we have on the internet.
So I ask you a question: does this (the removal of internet privacy) seem like a fair way to deal with cyber bullying in schools?
Well, if the removal of privacy only applies to when you are in school, then I'd say it's fair. Don't want teachers invading your privacy, then don't use facebook or private messages at the school. Going without internet chatting or whatever for a few hours at school isn't going to kill anyone.
This does not apply at school (a PROXY server prevents it) They actually have access to what we write at any time, anywhere.
THAT is illegal unless consent is given. THey are not allowed to liik through you Windows Messenger IMs unless you allow them to
They just need to notify you so that there is no reasonable expectation of privacy. Stating it may only be used for school purposes strengthens their case.
And that's when me and a friend begin the most horrific form of cybering in the world. Hey, they HAVE to screen it right? Don't wanna think I'm bullying anyone. Not my fault your eyes are gonna melt

I am not sure how this happens but it has become apparent that they can do this after a friend of mine had received an Email from the head of this Cyber Bullying 'crush campaign' after insulting the school musical over the long weekend
That was enough information for me.
Your friend made the comment in too public a spot. Any comment made in public (even on the internet) about the school is their business.

No matter how paranoid you get, your school still isn't hacking every account of yours on every website you go to in order to keep tabs on everything you say.

Well, everyone has access to your facebook and deviant art (and other similar websites), so why is this any different? Employers do the exact same thing. People just need to learn that there is no such thing as privacy on the internet.

I feel that the school has no say in anything that happens on the internet. It's outside of school. Let the authorities handle it.

I know the argument is that it "affects the school environment"... so do a lot of things. You gonna ban dating as well?

I think it's funny how being cyber-bullied still upsets people, I've been cyber-bullied like, twice. And my solution? Block, Delete. Simple enough?
No fucking kidding. Or better yet, know the dangers of going on the internet in the first place...
I had a similar solution if I was ever cyber-bullied, but I wasn't... I was real bullied (but I just ignored him and he turned into a friendless prick) but in the event of computer bullying: block or delete or hackz to change password and recovery questions. Mess with the bull, you get the cyber horns.
You you could back-trace them and get the cyberpolice on their ass XD
