Fallout has a rich backstory that is kinda believable, so allot of a stories can come from it making it the best choice for a movie

Portal would be mind-numbingly boring as a movie, it just wouldn't work. Fallout is too... 'open' to work as a movie; the setting could serve as the basis for an intersting flick, to be sure, but then again a setting alone is not the entire extent of a game. So in the end, all things considered (setting, protagonist, supporting characters, plot/narrative) Gears of War would work best as a movie.

-EDIT- formless777 got it right - Fallout is not movie material, but it would definitely work as a TV series, possibly even a great one.

Portal wouldn't really work as a movie unless they added a lot to the story.

Fallout is a great setting, but the open nature of the game would make it hard to translate to the big screen. Maybe if it would just focus on the main storyline of one of the games it'd work, but I feel it would always be missing something compared to the games.

I haven't played GoW so it's hard to judge, but from what I know I think the setting, and the gameplay structure, and the storyline could theoretically be adapted to make for a cool movie.

Also, maybe they could twist it up and have the Vault Dweller be female. ^_^

The canon of Fallout 2 makes it quite ambiguous as to the Vault Dweller's gender. Right down to the spouse - Pat.

My vote goes to Fallout. It simply has the richest story and setting to draw from--sure, a Gears movie would be epic, but it would more or less be a generic big-bdget sci-fi action movie. It would be fun to watch, but it can't compete with Fallout.

However, I do agree with you that Portal would be a good second choice. It may not translate to a full feature film, but I can see it becoming a short about Chell and GLaDOS's relationship (with a few really cool special effects thrown in). If they were to make this, I wouldn't want to see anyone GLaDOS portrayed by anyone other than Ellen McLain, who voiced the character in the game.

I think that all three of these could be viable films in some way (Fallout as the dramatic, post-apocalyptic one, Gears as the action movie with pretensions of emotion, and Portal as the artsy character piece), but Fallout is the one which I think would work best.

Fallout has so many possibilities so it could either be extremely good or bad in my opinion.

I imagine a Portal movie would be like Saw, but with a shit ton of black comedy. Sorta like what would happen if Edgar Wright (director of Shawn of the Dead) would do if he got his hands on the Saw franchise.

Gears of War would be a pretty awesome action flick, especially if they focused on the Pendulum Wars. I think it'd end up like Saving Private Ryan except with space marines.

I voted Gears of War.

Fallout could be far more interesting... Of course the narrative would have to be MUCH stronger than in Bethesda's Fallout 3, and I think it could absolutely work on a more psychological level. Explore the darker side of humanity and that wonderful moral gray area which Hollywood avoids like a plague-infested giant crocodile.

Gears of War. Because it looks like a movie, and it would be a pretty good movie. Lots of action at the very least.

Fallout would make a good psychological thriller or a horror movie. Action, not so much.

GOW would be the most generic piece of garbage since the orginal street fighter movie.

my vote gears it has a great storyline and a million things to build off of like where did the locust come from? why are they here?
Fallout would be a close second because much free roam games might not make a good movie
portal hell no its a good game but a movie where a woman finds a gun which can make portals to escape from a facility to get cake is stupid
but if there was an l4d movie i would shit my pants and be one of the first ticket holders to see it

Making a film out of any of these games would probably ruin the entire thing.
I think it's best to keep the gaming industry completely separate from the film industry, except that they're both on TV's.
