I take them off if I can be bothered since I'm usually lying on my bed.

I take them off. What changes is whether or not I take my socks off. If I'm at my Aunt and Uncle's, or there are others in my house, I keep 'em on. Otherwise my socks come off too.

Lets see, walk on your hard to clean carpet in dirty shoes or not....
I might wear shoes on the tile floored area of my house (an area extending from front to back door and in the kitchen) but the second I want to step on the carpet I take them off. Besides, who likes wearing shoes all of the time?

I take my shoes off upon entering my house or anyone's house. In Mid-West American culture, it's just what a person does immediately after entering a home.
I also live in the Mid-West and I find that it is really more of a 50-50 split, it just depends on the family.

I usually leave mine on, and sometimes take them off in my room for comfort.

I hate wearing shoes. Slippers, sandals, boots... I go socks only or barefoot indoors.

If my feet smell, on.

Thats usually only when it gets really hot outside and I was doing a lot of stuff.

What makes you think I wear shoes when I go outside the house? Unless I'm going to a place that requires shoes or it's cold outside I never wear shoes, I guess that would fall under take them off.

Well I only wear flip-flops so it is just easier to take them off, the only time I wear real boots is if I'm working. I never wear real shoes, only flip-flops or wook boots.

We always take our shoes off in our house. It's good because all the dirty stuff on the sole of our shoes doesn't get everywhere.

Well here in Iceland it is a custom to take them off. Most school building demand that you take them off. If you attend church you must take them off.
Sure, restaurants and such make no demand of it. But many public buildings ask you take them off, and every common household that I know of has you take them off.

I take my shoes off. I honestly can't think of anyone who would ever wear shoes indoors. Only time I go in with my shoes on is when I am leaving the apartment, realize I've forgotten something (usually my keys hihi) and go in again to pick them up. Even then I feel bad for doing so and wonder if anyone will be able to tell that I've done so.

I actually had a party at my place yesterday. I had at least 25 people over, all which took their shoes off.

Is this weird, normal or just very swedish?

In Norway, you always take your shoes of when you're in someone's home. Anything else is considered very bad form. It's a basic cleanliness issue.

I'm really surprized at all the responces to this thread. Here, everyone I know, my household included, leaves their shoes on indoors. I can't remember the last time I've seen one of my family members in my house without shoes on, unless they've just woken up or are changing them or something.
And taking your shoes off in someone else's home, unless they specifically ask you? Seems kind of rude to me, like you own the place.

If I wake up, I am not going to go and put my boots on.

If I go for a walk and get back home, they stay on till I go to bed.

If I go to a friends house I get annoyed when they say "can you take your boots off?", why? One way or another it's going to get dirty and you will have to hoover and it is just a massive hassle for me. (I wear boots all the time, I only own one pair of foot wear)

If somebody comes to mine they can leave them on, if they want to take them off then go for it. I don't care either way, although it does make me chuckle when they do take them off.

I don't have many guests though ...
