I don't particularly like Rage Against The Machine, nor the Xfactor, but this counts as another victory for the Internet, so I'm pleased.

While I'm glad that Rage won, and love Killing in the Name of, I think they could have chosen a song more appropriate for campaigning against the X factor, like Welcome to the Machine by Pink Floyd or Y'all Want a Single by Korn. It would have been good to see a song about the problems in the music industry winning a campaign against one of the biggest problems in the music industry.

Ughhh... I cant stand rage against the machine its just a bunch of political banter. How can you even call it music?
Easily.

Guitarist = Guitar x Talent.
Drummer = Drums x Talent.
Singer = Voice x Talent.
Bassist = Bass x Talent.

So what we can conclude from this is:

Rage Against The Machine = Talent(Guitarist x Bassist x Singer x Drummer).

Rage Against The Machine (or to simplify into algebra, RATM)+ Amps and Microphones = Music.

Thats how I call it music.

Whilst on one hand I'm amused by the putting a loud, crude rock song as Christmas No. 1 I can't help wondering what would happen if all those people had given their 65p to charity instead.
Actually, I've heard that Rage are doing exactly that.

I think they deserve the number one. I think its about time that x-factor got knocked off the number one spot. Back to real talent and real music other than this talentless crap that "talent" shows constantly throw out. About time people who actually work to get there music out there got the recognition they deserve.
Of course i think its a shame that Christmas number ones aren't about Christmas any more though.

Well, I did throw my lot in with the RATM campaign, though initially wasn't sure what chance it would have had of winning. Yet here we are. I'm quite chuffed the song got to number one. There is however talk on the facebook group of trying the same again next year. Personally, now that the deed has been done, I think it should be left at that.

There are some quite devoted X Factor supporters in my work, it will be interesting to hear what they have to say about this tomorrow.

Heh. Awesome.

Also, even though Cowell works for Sony, I can't see him getting any more money than usual, as he didn't have anything to do with RATM getting No. 1.

I'm happy about it, I was never a big fan of the X Factor.
Personally, I think Christmas Number 1s should be christmas songs, but that's hardly the case these past few years, it's always been the X Factor winner. Hooray.

Oh yes, definitely. 'Christmas Time' was rock, but it was also about Christmas, so it was epic in several ways. We had a great song that people loved and it deserved to be No. 1 that Christmas because it was a genuinely good song, that was specifically about Christmas. If only more bands would take that route, like, songs that are good anyway and in a good style, yet still about the festive period. Instead of the cheesy Cliff Richard style crap that some people have been trying to get to No. 1 this year...
Yeah someone needs to do another version of "Rock n Roll Christmas" by the excellent Gary Glitt- No... Wait... Forget I said anything...

But you make a good point, about needing Christmasy, Christmas number one, and this comes from someone who despises christmas music...

Poor little Joe... I so want throw a snowball rock at his face now...

hopefully this will give confidence to other bands to actually release xmas singles. well known bands have stopped due to this monopoly over recent years. bands such as sterophonics have already said there is no point maybe this will change minds. sorry for the lower case type, i am currently one handed!

I didn't actually participate in this little contest but I am glad that RATM won, if only because I've never seen the appeal of the X factor and TV "talent" contests in general. Although I am a little disappointed they won only narrowly. After all, that still means Simon Cowell will get a huge amount of money...

Perhaps, however, I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks you shouldn't have posted...I wonder how many of those 4000-odd posts came from meaningless one-liners that bring nothing to the discussion...

this is what I said about the matter on an earlier forum

Simon Cowell said:
"All these musical snobs have ganged up against Joe.

"If you take me out of the equation, you have a teenager with his first single being attacked by a huge hate mob on Facebook. It almost feels like a little kid being bullied. It feels like a spiteful campaign aimed at an 18-year-old who won a talent competition.

"It's David versus Goliath and it's not fair on Joe. It's getting out of hand."
"Do you think it's bullying, or is Simon Cowell and Cheryl Cole reading too much into this?"
I'm pretty sure David won against Goliath and I think the analogy perfect. Except Goliath is X Factor and similar shows which have taken over the music industry and we are David the poor saps who nobody ever expects to win. Fuck you Simon Cowell, Fuck you and your retarded selection process for churning out momentarily popular pitiable people with talent that might've been picked up by the music industry where they would be supported and given a real future rather than at the most 3 years of fame. Whatever happened to Gareth Gates? Nobody gives a shit.

To compare this to bullying is laughable when you see what Simon Cowell does on TV. Wanker.
basically, while I feel for this joe bloke, I can't help but think the x factor didn't do him any good. what he should've done is start at the bottom of the music industry and worked his way up. the beatles became what they were through practice and dedication and playing loads of gigs.

besides, christmas no. 1 actually isn't a great way to consider whether a song is good or not, it just means it has brief popularity. RATM has a solid fanbase and do some great work as a band, if anyone deserves a reward I'd say these guys do. "killing in the name" is the perfect song for the cause we fought, it's showing we can't take any more of this x factor and big brother nation we've created and we want to move on.

Well I don't live in the UK, nor do I know what you guys are talking about, but Rage Against the Machine always equals "win", so I go with option no. 1.
