It is not the word that causes the harm, it is the intent. This is why the swearwords that seem more acceptable than others varies from place to place (if that sentence makes any sense). Example: My mother doesn't mind swears like "shit" or "bastard" being used around her (not at her obviously) because where she comes from those are used fairly casually. However, she got very mad when somebody use the word "****" because apparently that's the word that used to carry the most vicious intent where she was from.

Excessive swearing just seems a bit infantile to me. It's the kind of thing people do to look cool and it just becomes a habit like spitting.

Some people swear every two words. That gets tedious. Otherwise, I have no problem with it.

It doesn't really bother me unless the ratio of swear words to other words is like 2 to 1. I will admit that I curse too much when I'm speaking out loud. It makes me sound like an idiot, but I learned it in high school and its a hard habit to break.

Honestly, though, they're just words. I don't understand why people get offended at them unless they're intended as an insult.

Swearing should only be used at an extreme end of an emotion, using it as you wish is just rude. And that cop pisses me off.

I cuss like a gutter whore, but I try to keep it both situation appropriate and marginally more creative than just throwing out a curse or two every other sentence -- for example, the guy who cuts me off is a dick, my neighbour is a subliterate troglodyte ape-man, my friend's (thankfully) ex is a cunting shit-for-brains wankstain, and so on. Besides, it's fun cussing people out without ever saying anything that would offend your grandma.

I do my best to hold my tongue around people who don't approve; if something you do bothers someone you don't actively want to offend, it's just good manners to refrain.

First of all, I don?t really believe in swear words. By that I don?t mean that I don?t use them, I mean that I don?t think they exist. Shit and poop are the same stuff, but one will get me fired if I say it in front of my students. I use whatever word comes to mind. And for people who say that it is a sign of a lesser intelligence, fuck you, I?m smarter than you. For that matter, so is Bill Maher, Denis Miller and Mel brooks, and they all swear. Now, if you swear and think that it makes you look cool, then you are an idiot. Saying fuck is no cooler than saying screw, they?re both just words.

The funny thing is that adults all tell kids not to swear, but most of them do swear. It?s hypocritical. If you want to hear swearing, walk into a teacher?s lounge, or the coach?s office in the locker room after the kids are gone. But if the kids say it they get in trouble. If kids shouldn?t say it, adults shouldn?t say it.

Slightly off-topic: What bought this topic to mind was an idiotic 911 video I saw where the operator was refusing to send an ambulance because the caller said fuck. Completely unacceptable for the 911 operator no matter how much you're against swear words.

he kept his job? really? holy carp on a stick. That blows my mind, he put someones life at risk, and has somehow ducked most of the blame. Not only that, but he arrested someone for a charge THAT DOESN'T EXIST!!! I guess this is because he got so scared when a girl said fuck, that he shit out his brain in terror. No wonder he doesn't have the courage to answer any questions about his stupidity, i mean if the word fuck makes him cry. Fire the fucker and hire someone who has enough guts that their boss doesn't have to do their explaining for their mistakes.

Nope.

Eventually words like "shit" and "fuck" will be about as offensive as "darnit".

"C*nt" however...

This. It's worst when it's an 8-year-old kid on Xbox Live with a really high voice.

Considering his 20 year good track record with the department, I can understand not firing him. Yet I think he got off a bit too lightly, regardless. I think a more fitting punishment would have been a month suspension, the so-called 'training', and having to pay for the hospital bills.

OT: Some people here do have a point, I do think it's stupid when people swear excessively just to be cool.

I have no problem with swearing whatsoever, either at me, or to me, and have no problem swearing at others.
