Other: Swords were historically one of the less effective weapons. They were the ancient equivalent to an officer's pistol: Light, easy to carry around, less effective than a rifle (Polearms, (Assault rifle) axes, (Shotgun) bows, (Sniper) and crossbows (One of those really big heavy duty snipers)) and more of a symbol of rank than anything else.
Knights equated only having a sword to being unarmed. Swords main advantage came from the fact that they could be sheathed at your side, because otherwise they were generally inferior.
It wasn't until the rapier that swords really were a good choice. It cold get through any type of armor, could easily be poisoned, was capable enough to run someone through with a pound of force, was cheap to produce, and could once again; be easily carried around on your person.
I would go with polearms. Preferably a halberd.
I hope you realize there were hundreds of varieties of swords across the world, all with different abilities.

Swords, but that's more because I love all the medieval connotations, and I just generally find swords cooler. I also LARP, and have used swords - it's fuuuuun :D

Guns totaly

fear factor people extremly unaware of how scary 160+ DB can actually be
speed no human alive can run 300+ Meter a second
longer range
faster killing speed against groups
better armour penetration its why we stopped wearing metal armour, people stopped using swords way before guns became widely used as armour was offering far too much protection
far less training required
the wounds are more fatal

Swords were not even the most effective weapons of their day even 500 years ago, while guns have replaced every single one of their ontemporarys and all the armours people wore to protect them

Reality is guns win, sword users even in fantasy have to be inhuman in capability or put in extremly contrived situations to even give them the slightest chance but lose completly in every other possible situation

Firearms are the principal weapon of every modern military force, nuff said

I like swords the best. As a practical weapon i can't deny that the guns stands tall above the sword, that's probably why it replaced the sword in warfare - but i still can't say i like them. I just never really saw the appeal of pointing at something, pulling the trigger and "Wopah" the target is dead/wounded. And before anyone says anything... Fighting with a sword is quite different from "Flailing around a piece of sharp and pointy metal"

On a side note... The Legend of Zelda wouldn't be half as awesome if Link had a gun instead of his trusted Master Sword

Guns over long distances, and swords at short distances so as not to waste ammo. Case in point: Deus Ex. Nanosword with maximum level melee skill and maximum upgraded combat strength augmentation. Turns a power-armour soldier into BBQ chunks with one swipe.

Anyone can kill with a gun and with relative ease in a fight. It takes skill to use a sword in close quarters combat and walk away alive. Trained gunmen are boring as hell to watch, watch two Olympic fencers and see true skill of arms.

Guns, if I have to kill somebody I don't want to hear or see them die if I can help it.
I'm the opposite, if I _have_ to kill someone, I'd rather make it worth it. No wimpy spray from range with an ak. :p
If they're spraying with a kalashnikov rifle, they aren't a real shooter. No a 30-06. fired from an M1 Garand is more my speed. powerful and relatively accurate considering its age. Not to say I'm against swords in close combat, better than most guns depending on how close we're talking, I would just prefer to not see them die, smell them die, or hear them die. I want to see a human shaped blob falling in the distance, makes the trauma of killing a bit more bearable.

Guns are more effective (unless your opponent is a bullet-cutting ninja >.>) but swords would probably be more satisfieing, espetialy the big ones that cleave people into multiple bits >x3

It's a difficult choice; swords are prettier and feel somehow more badass to wield (probably exactly because they are <guns in a real fight), guns are more useful and make for better destruction.
All I know is, if I find myself within 15ft of an enemy with a gun in my hand, I will always close quarters to go for the melee kill...

Reality? Gun... duh.

Gaming? Swords! I played a Warrior for most of my WoW life, second most was Rogue and then Death Knight... Hunters/casters barely. I also love using a knight sword + shield in Demon's Souls. And many other games.

EDIT:

I'm definitely a gun person. I'd rather put 20 5.56 rounds into a person before they can even get within swinging range. Forget the whole "honorable" thing with swords, let's see how honorable Johnny is once I shoot him in the head and walk away without anyone knowing who did it

Swords, especially with the ability to teleport, are way better than guns.

I've always liked swords. Any fool can pull a trigger, and with enough bullets you're bound to hit something. Any fool can swing a sword, but they'll be easily beaten by someone that knows how to use it.
