A bunch of my friends keep talking about getting tattoos, but I don't think they ever will. I actually just get my second one a week ago (a maple leaf, if you're interested in knowing).

For anyone who is thinking about getting one, I feel I should say that it doesn't really hurt. It's more annoying, like an itch you can't scratch. It will feel like a burn for a couple of days afterwards, though.

Oh that sounds quite nice actually. I take it the dragon is sorta "peeking" over your shoulder as it's tail and body are "wrapped" around your waist and ribs? Well best of luck finding someone to do it and getting the money for it.

I know this is slightly late but welcome to the Escapist! Just follow the rules, don't feed the trolls and ignore that body under the basement stairs and you'll have a great time here! :D
Thanks! On both counts :)

My first one was a black star on the back of my right hand, then on the inner wrist I got some artwork from a Green Day album that helped me a lot growing up, and just over a year ago I got a laughing jester on my calf - one of the designs used on the Joker cards in The Dark Knight, actually - to remind me not to take things too seriously.

I have never regretted any of them, 'cept I wish I'd gone to a better artist for my first two as the ink was kinda crappy and they're already blurring.

It really doesn't hurt as much as people say... well, we all have different levels of pain we can cope with, and it depends where on your body you have it of course.

Edit: Forgot to post the pics. Bare with me I've never tried this here before.

I has a few actually. I terms of the pain I'd say arms are pretty good, but as you move onto you torso that where the pain is at. Side/stomach are by far the worst I've felt, but I've been told armpit is pretty insane.
I only get tatts that I have designed myself. I would never pick something of the wall or copy someone else.
Heres the start of my left arm, amazing how much detail the tattooist managed to get into it. There is more of this are to come as I get the cash together.

Not yet.

In the future:

An "sXe" on my back

A fist clenching a rose on the back of my left shoulder

A red star on my arms or chest

the words "We must accept finite disappointment, but never lost infinite hope" on my upper back.

Truthfully I think I look awe full, and I know at least 5 people who claim to like their tattoos but their tattoos are crap.

Like pictures of lion heads.

They make themselves believe its cool and sentimental, even though they are in denial.

I'm planning on getting one soon, and I want a cat pouncing up my back (I've wanted it for 4 years already so I don't think I'm going to regret it unless the artist does a crappy job). I would also want a dragon with butterfly wings on my ankle.

I got a tattoo about 2 months ago. I really took the time to think about what I wanted to get and I went through a few design ideas. When it came time to pick one I decided on a design of a hammerhead shark taking a bite out of a diver's down flag. It represents my love of scuba diving and my love of sharks. I will never regret getting it, and I plan on getting a few more. I believe that when you get a tattoo, it has to represent something about yourself, otherwise you're just making a complete ass of yourself.

No I don't have a tatoo. I'm too young for one. If I get one I would get one to remind me of my youthful nerdiness. Maybe like this:

They would have to be quite small and un-noticeable for me to consider it though. Maybe the HL2 Lambda symbol?

Anyone have experience with henna? (how long it lasts, ho hard to take care of, etc?)
And what colors are possible with it? On google it seems 90% are done in a dark brown, but I think I glimpsed a few red and yellow ones

I have 3, a kladagh(basically hands holding a heart with a crown on it) on my back as well as the stupid butterfly on my shoulder. Its small and pretty but pretty much every other chick seems to have them so that kind of bugs me. I also have a lady bug on my foot. I love it, but I wish it was smaller. The kladagh and lady bug really have personal significance for me and I regret none of it.

I do find it funny though when people get stupid ones. My step sister has a purple rosary on one half of her rib cage and flowers on the other. Her mom is catholic but she never goes to church, she's just really into the whole "I'm a latina" thing, regardless of the fact that she looks about as Anglo as I do.

Edit- I also gave her crap afterwards that she should get a teardrop on her cheek to finish out the look.

You don't trust you own decision making abilities when it comes to tattoos for crying out loud!

OT: No, never will. I don't like the idea of peircings either. Besides, I've heard that you can get skin dieseases if the needles aren't clean (which they are I know but there's always that dirty shithole whos owner bribes the health inspector).
This is why everyone thinking about getting a tattoo or piercing needs research. Talk to others about the piercer they use, i guarantee you'll be able to find a best piercer. Check a local indie newspaper for its yearly best of. Also. insist that you see the piercer put both your needle, and your jewelry into a working autoclave. there are also licensing groups for piercers.

tattoo artists are a more personal choice. make sure you look at their portfolio. remember that you get what you pay for in a tattoo, so don't price shop, artist shop. Never ever get flash. you'll regret any non custom piece. also, any artist worth his shit would balk at giving a first timer knuckle, face, or neck tattoos, and will absolutely do everything they can to make sure their vision and your vision for the tattoo match. never let an artist pressure you into something you don't really want. phew....

OT: i have a back piece one of my best friends designed for me, i looked at it for years before finally getting it. i also have the quote "We are the music makers.. and we are the dreamers of dreams" split between my forearms in a broken typewriter font. they are both personally relevant and mark a time of change in my life.

I would totally get two handguns tattooed on my abdomen so that the grips extend above my belt line and the barrels point towards my crotch. Keeping it classy.

Nay thee I say to you. I don't plan on getting one either, not that I have anything against them, but a tat wouldn't look good on me.
