I believe it is Love.

And then combined, they form CAPTAIN PLANET~!

But seriously.. elements? Let's get started on alchemy while we're still at it.
Technically, it's Heart, not Love, but I suppose Love works well enough. Ma-Ti must have been pissed when all the other Planeteers got halfway interesting powers with their rings, and he got friggin' Heart.

Not that I'm a fan. Not at all. But any superhero that looks like Kurt Russell deserves at least a little attention, however lame that superhero may be.

Anyway, back to the topic. I was going to make a reference to Mila Jokovich, but unsurprisingly enough other users got to it first.

Damn it, you beat me to it!
I'm surprised that wasn't in the poll! ^_^

I think elements are relative. They're just man-made words after all, but there could be hundreds we don't actually register as elements that actually are, like the void of space - that THING outside the Universe etc.

Void, going by the Legend of the Five Rings books.
Perhaps electricity should count, instead of being classed as air/wind like in some RPGs.

I like the idea of the four elements, though fire always seemed out of place since its a reaction whilst the other three are substances. However I've come to realise they all have their place, earth/water/air are representative of solid/liquid/gas and land/ocean/sky respectively, fire could therefore be representing energy and the core of Earth in those scenarios.

I knew that someone was going to correct me, dammit.

As absurd as the rings were, the ones for Captain Pollution's team were even worse. I mean come on; Deforestation, Super Radiation, Smong, Toxic and Hate? Sheesh.
I don't even remember Captain Pollution, or his team. And judging by this new bit of information you've given me, that show was even more lame than I remember (which is rather impressive, to be honest).

Well most elements can be found in earth, fire, water and wind so seeing as the rest are made by man it'll either be living organisms or humans.

The periodic table of 'elements' is not the same as the base 'elements' because you can't have a Boron elemental, but you can have an Earth Elemental
(for arguments sake, because there ARE no elementals, but you get the idea.)
What about Titanium Elementals [http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0423.html]?!

Cake. Cake is the fifth element. We know this because cake is the purest substance in the known universe, and thus, cannot naturally exist. We have been able to synthisise cake in our labs only by combining the other four elements. Earth (from which the flour and other base ingredients are born), water (to make the base ingredients into a semi-liquid form), fire (which seared the cake into a spongy form) and air (which cooled the cake, and populated the air pockets) combine into one pure form. Cake. I think I just pwned the internets.

How about electricity as the fifth element. It works like this,
Start with a solid, add energy and you get water, add a lot more energy and you get air, add even more and you get a plasma, which is basically fire, but what happens when you add as much energy as possible? Does it turn into electricity?

I'd say electricity, but I guess metal makes sense too.

In regards to the poll, if the first 4 elements are basic substances, why would the 5th jump to an organism or ... the other unrelated things you mentioned?
