Mass Effect for the awesome cinematic feel, great characters and good visual design. Also, not quite sure what the poll option about it is supposed to mean? Not quite an RPG? How the hell isn't it an RPG?
Fallout 3 in close second. While the story is weaker, it did provide a very interesting open world to explore and with it Bethesda has attoned for the massive screwup that was Oblivion.

What I mean is it's not an RPG in the traditional sense. It has a far greater emphasis on the shooting part rather than the RPGy part. Even Fallout 3 had VATs mode, giving it a traditional RPG feel.

On the other hand, it had a far greater emphasis on dialogue and choices than Fallout 3 as well as a far more involved story, so that more than qualifies it as a proper RPG. Also, I'm not sure how VATS qualifies for "traditional RPG feel" but ME's Pause-and-cast system doesn't

Ah, touche! I completely forgot about the P&C system... perhaps I was wrong after all!

Could you define generation cause that makes no sense without any definition. It sounds like your just trying to make your questions sound clever when your actually asking whats the best new RPG ¬.¬
I think you're the one trying to sound clever. 'This generation' is a universally (well, gaming universally) known term for the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii amongst players and developers alike. I think you know what I mean, so don't, uh, try to sound clever when your actually trying to be a bit of an idiot.

Actually, this doesn't exsist, but it damn well should. Yer take World of Warcraft, subtract multiplayer, raise spawn times for the monsters, make the world smaller, subtract grinding, add a new interface to cope with the SNAPPY new combat system that took the place of grinding, the ability to customize armor, and a bigger variety of quests, then name it something like, I dunno Plannet of Battlecraft. Actually that's an nice name.
Shit. On second thought fallout 3 is probably better than that, but whatever.
As far as RPG's go this generation I have only played Val. Chronicles, Oblivion, and Fallout 3.
I'm a big Sci-Fi fan but when it comes down to it Oblivion was a superior RPG. To methre was alot more story in Oblivion, and much more to do then just go aroun to differant areas and kill things.
You missed off star ocean the last hope, that game was try=uely awesome for anyone that loves JRPG's, i'm on the seond disc and nearly played 50 hours. Truely epic game.
Oh, without a doubt, Lost Odyssey, but thats a hardcore classic style jrpg, which is a bit too "RPG"-ish for most people nowadays, it seems.
I still have trouble looking at fallout 3 as anything more than an fps with rpg elements... but thats just me.(I feel Mass Effect is the opposite, an RPG with 3rd person shooter elements, go figure.)
Really though, RPGs are defined by their stories, and as far as stories go, Lost Odyssey is the freaking epic saga of rpgs. It has so much story, it actually has short stories within the story. Fleshes out so much backstory, and you get to the point of feeling real emotions for the characters, and caring about what happens next. I just feel that this level of storytelling has, *AS OF YET*, not been acheived by the more open ended RPGs. (dont get me wrong, I love me some Oblivion)
I mean to say... with the more open ended, I guess you could say, RPGs, they seem to be roughly on the level with the REALLY old rpgs, Where the focus is more on the events the characters witness, and less to do with the interpersonal relationships of the characters directly around the protagonist... It seems more like the story is happening *AROUND* your character(s), instead of directly *TO* your characters. I hope that makes sense.
Dont get me wrong, I say that some of them have amazing storylines, but it always feels more like your character isnt directly tied in, really. I guess thats kind of important to me.
Anyway, just some thoughts.

Also, this, quoted for troofs. That was indeed rife with horific characters and plot. Edge Maverick (bad... name...) was a generic rpg hero, and for his big emotional scene, its more like he's a selfish crybaby instead of someone who really cared about
all the people he indirectly killed
Also... it wasnt funny... it wanted to be and it wasnt... it tried excrutiatingly hard as well, with stupid voices and zany characters...
I agree, Star Ocean: The Last Hope was a dissapointment to someone who loved Star Ocean 1 and 2.
I could not bring myself to vote for Fallout 3 in the poll, since it is the only game of the list I have actually played (and could not finish the whole thing, for my lowly computer found itself coughing blood rather soon into the game, even with most settings MINed-down).
But one RPG that drew me in fully, that is not given in the poll as an option, was The Witcher. The details, the names of the places, the environments, and the personality of the dwellers (even though their random comments were not too extensive) were very immersive. And since the game was based on an already existing fantasy world, all of those aspects were then very cohesive.
