You missed off star ocean the last hope, that game was try=uely awesome for anyone that loves JRPG's, i'm on the seond disc and nearly played 50 hours. Truely epic game.
Eugh, I hate that game. I gave up late into the first disk.

. Poor characters
. Boring story
. Weak combat system
. The worst moveable camera I've ever seen.
. Mediocre graphics
. Laughable dialogue
. Confusing mechanics

Before you say anything I do enjoy JRPG's - I've only got into the genre this gen, so it didn't cost to much to buy the majority of the best on the 360 - I just couldn't stand SO:TLH and wonder, why Tri-Ace did so poorly after the great game that was Infinite Undiscovery.

There's just no comparison, Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia, The Last Remnant are all superior games, but even those similar to it such as Infinite Undiscovery are arguably much better games.
I wouldn't agree with the graphics, the story wasn't to bad I agree it's not the best on story or characters, the camera angles i didn't really feel any different, and i thought the combat system was really fluid and worked quite well, to be honest thats just my personal opinion though.

Why was Oblivion controversial? Bethesda made all the others didn't they? It's not like when they took over Fallout 3.

It's Oblivion or Mass Effect for me, hard to choose though because they're so different.

I thought Fallout 3 was dull beyond belief.

Without a doubt Valkyria Chronicles.

I'm a hardcore fanboy though :b

Even listening to the OST as we speak.

It's quite annoying that JRPGs and RPGs are thrown in together here. :/

Anyway, Fallout 3 wins for me, followed by Oblivion, then Mass Effect, followed closely by Lost Odyssey.

I'd say Fallout 3, my only dissapointment is that I had to borrow the originals and wasn't able to keep them :D

I hated Mass Effect, but all my freinds shun me because they think it's "Teh Gretist RPG's Evarr" but I think it's shite. It just didn't feel right, the micro-management and all that.

I think I'm gonna go for Lost odyssey here... It was enjoyable, but the memory of it will fade...

i'm not gonna go for Oblivion or Fallout because, well, they're western RPG's and thus, their stories suck. I've never played out a western RPG in my life because they just couldn't keep me interested. I always manage to force myself through the boring parts of jRPG's simply because of the great plots that suck you right in. Western RPG's are simply to open worlded to have a similar well crafted tale, I believe...

Nonetheless, RPG's on the seventh generation are a sad and meager thing.
If this were the sixth gen, I'd go for Shadow Hearts, Shadow Hearts Covenant, Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call, Persona 3, Persona 4 and maybe even Final Fantasy X and XII.
Alas...

Not necessarily because they're western RPGs. The World Ends With You, anybody?

But yeah, their stories did suck...

Hmmmm, Mass Effect, Oblivion or FO3 are the contenders IMO, and yet though they are very good in some ways they are all still noticibly flawed in various ways. Tough one.

The Bethesda games are pretty good in terms of open-world gameplay, but for me, Mass Effect has the best writing, characters, and gameplay I've seen so far. As far as this poll goes, there's no competition for me.

I'd have to vote Mass Effect, because it points in the direction of where I want to see RPG's go in the future. Deeper Character Development and Social Interaction mixed with exciting action based gameplay.

Lost Odyssey, while a good game, is a swan song to what was, not what is or what should be. Same with Tales of Vesperia.

To me Fallout 3 and Oblivion represent the Alternate Path of RPG's, one branch is Mass Effect, the other is Oblivion/Fallout 3. On the one hand you have deep character driven story, and on the other you have wide, open ended character building, worlds and stories.

YOUR OPINION IS WRONG [small][/sarcasm][/small]

Basically, I feel Star Ocean's graphics are poor due to inconsistency. In some places the graphics are pretty decent, such as inside the Calnes (or however you spell it) whilst on other planets the art design is downright horrible. Unlike IU, the game just doesn't have that kind of fantasy, atmospheric quality. There are large sandy plains, dense jungles and large castles. The parts of Star Ocean I played just didn't have that sense of atmosphere. It may be very typical of the genre, but I feel Tri-aces art design suited that style, at least their design's on this generation whilst the space theme looking boring - at at times extremely strange.

The camera was a massive pain for me, because its so sensitive, it took me a few hours to get used to it, but I never did manage to tame the beast - it's extremely irritating to run into enemies you don't want to fight due to the camera...

As for the combat system, I don't know if you have played IU, but the combat system in that game is completely real-time. Star Ocean's combat felt extremely sluggish in that you don't have a large move list and are very limited in your control - at least early on in the game. When compared to Tales of Vesperia or IU (in which the player has a greater sense of control and progression) its difficult to see why you enjoy this combat system. I also disliked the magic system (I can't recall its in-game name), but don't really think I got far enough in to comment on it.

Just don't make me discuss the irritating characters, 'k? (I Hate Limell or whatever her name was).

OT: I'm not going to change my vote because Lost Odyssey is the best RPG this generation in my opinion, but I will state that my second and third places (at least on the 360) go to Tales of Vesperia and Infinite Undiscovery.

Yea, but they're western RPG's and thus, the gamplay doesnt make you want to shoot yourself.

Well, yeah, technically, 'The World Ends With You' is, in fact, a Japanese RPG.

...

But of course, it's a bit of a messed up reference isn't it?
Most people refer to RPG's with a turn-based battle system (and random ecnounters), but literally, it still means 'RPG's from Japanese origine'. I mean, they still slap the jRPG-label onto games like 'FF XII', 'Star Ocean' and 'Tales Of...', but do they still uphold all those old values?

TWEWY is more Kingdom Hearts like, often depicted as an action/RPG or platformer/RPG. It's a bit in between two worlds if you ask me...

And, well, the story wasn't all that bad, but it was far from original. Just play a couple of Shin Megami Tensei games and you'll see what I mean. Heck, even the use of the Japanese city Shibuya in an RPG has been done before in SMT: Lucifer's Call.

I'm gonna have to go with Oblivion. I actually prefer Fallout 3, but even with its RPG elements, I still see that one as more of an FPS. Oblivion was RPG through and through, so it's got my vote for best RPG.

But if you die from boredom, you're still dead.
(double reflect - or as it is called in Final Fantasy IX - reflect x2)
