You missed off star ocean the last hope, that game was try=uely awesome for anyone that loves JRPG's, i'm on the seond disc and nearly played 50 hours. Truely epic game.
I love JRPGs and hated that game.

To many annoying characters and a generic plot.
Har har har. You jst described all JRPGs you silly, silly man.

After much thinking I say the best RPG of this generation is Fallout 3. But only because Fable TLC isn't this generation. (Is it?) And I like guns more than I do swords. (Fallout vs Oblivion)

I'm going with Mass Effect, but mostly because I don't fell like Fallout 3 is very good RPG and I never played Oblivion.

The lack of Persona 4 in this thread and poll disturbs me deeply.

I dare anyone here to find another game that used a strip club as a level zone, that was not a porn game, and had it work.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4. Definitely Persona 4. The best characterization I've seen in any game, and completely unique if you ignore Persona 3. It still gets beaten by some other RPGs, but it is by far the best recent one I've encountered.

I've got to hand it to Fallout 3. It was a streamlined and improved upon version of oblivion. A large expansive world, interesting characters, plenty of side quests, and a story that while simple, was immersive. Add on to that the ability to play using any number of play styles, and hilariously awesome weapons, and you have a recipe for success. All I can say is that fallout 3 simply left everything else in the dust. But if you want a sleeper hit, check out persona 3 on ps2. It came out this gen, but because was on a last gen machine, generally wasn't as noticed, well, that and it didn't have the words FINAL FANTASY on it.
Persona 3 may have been a sleeper hit, but Persona 4 was critically acclaimed. [http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ps2/shinmegamitenseipersona4?q=Persona%204]

So yes. Persona 4 for me, even if it was released on the PS2.

Fallout 3 is the best game without "Baldur's" in the title that I've ever played, so we'll go with that one. It's also strictly better than Oblivion, so I'm not sure why you even have Oblivion on the poll.
