Wow this poll is evily mean! But i would say that beacuase i love FF 7 and didn't realise how much hatred it cause. I've played every final fantasy game except FF Online and honestly ... 7 was my favourite, so kill me. 4 was a masterpiece but 7 just had something to its insanely confusing story that completely hooked me.
I can only answer the poll in terms of most overrated game... prepares for an ass kicking for this one: I thought HL 2 was great but i was kinda expecting it to... i dunno do something more.. after everyones reaction to it and me being late to play it, i thought it was gonna be... well i dunno what but something better than it was, furthermore, i really object to people telling me there something wrong with me because i didn't like a game as much as them. Common guys games books whatever people have different tastes, some people dont like dickens some people dont think HL2 was the son of god. But because im an unreasonable bastard with a hatred of zelda gmaes Zelda gets my vote :D

I was originally going to say that I thought this was a stupid poll till i read this post, so Im going to say FF7 as well, because I hate the direction it took the series. Whoever decided FF games should only have 3 members to a party should be shot. However decided 99% of male characters should be incredibly emo and androgynous should be shot. Whoever decided FF should 100% leave high fantasy/Steam-punk and go wannabe-technological should be shot. And whoever is in charge of pumping out more FF7 games should be shot. Oh, I dont mean shot dead, just maybe the base of the spine, or something.

It makes less and less sense when the toothpick armed 13 year old protagonists slaughter heavily armed gun-toting fiends without breaking a sweat...

@_@ *pant pant pant* Er.... Okay, sorry, that concludes my scathing, virulent rant.
I agree with you for the most part I LOVED the pixeled games and how they worked out (ff6 was steampunk but it pulled it off well by not OVERDOING it) but yeah i think the 3 char party was due to graphical limitations (I think thats why they toned down the graphics from ff8 to ff9) in ff12 you can (with a guest) but it tends to lag up the fight but I really miss the 4 person parties :p good rant though -virtual high five-

It's funny, I run into people all over who either loved FF7 completely or hated it entirely. Myself, I loved it becasue it kept the RPG elements of a fantasy game, yet made it into a more industrial-esque, realistic setting, with corporations, political intrigue, and sciences.

By the way, I voted For Sonic 3. The game kept glitching on me, saying I never found all the emeralds even though I had.

I hate Mario, bastard italian plummer kicking ass, he should fixing pipes not saving the princess in 500 different games all having the same plot.
Are we talking about the Legend of Zelda series here? Oh, mario huh? Yeah him too... they both have the same story just ones about a gay guy who fancies Shiek but the princess keeps getting in the way of their budding and very gay relationship... but he doesnt know they are the same person. HAHA, this can only lead to comedy hijinks... or more likely suicidal boredom! I voted for Legend of Zelda just before laughing until I accidently bit of my tongue! =D Bring it Fan Boyz!!!

Four person parties are for the people who keep dying on three person parties because there isnt enough people to swarm their enemy and kick his head in like a football hooligan... and yes I am calling anyone who like four person parties over three person parties cowards and you cant argue against it because thats the only logical reason you see the difference! Also, what did FF7 do to the series? Make it graphically better? Better and new stories rather than getting freakin' crystals? Having a logical reason why people can train past the physical limit of every other thing on the planet? Tying in real world issues into the plot of the game? Yes I see you point these are all... wait, these are brilliant things that made the game the best in the series that everybody thinks it is! Oh, and FF7 didnt make every male "emo". Look at the characters Cloud - never said anything, Barret - angry big headed jerk but still pretty cool, Red XIII - The intelectual, Cid - The crazy mechanic, Cait Sith - a stuffed toy and finally Vincent - Yeah, maybe he is kinda depressed but he was bloody tortured and tested on, made into a monster, saw the love of his life stolen from him, betrayed by her too and shot in the head and he still doesnt talk about it and "how he cuts himself and wants to die" so he isnt an emo!

i think a lot of people are voting sonic because they dont remember how good 3 was. they're thinking of how bad the games after that became. the original sonic games were on par w/ super mario.

Half-Life 2 is the best there

then Super Mario 3 is tied w/ Sonic the Hedgehog 3

then Final Fantasy 7

then Zelda: Link to the past
Not according to the poll! Mwhahahahaha
EGM gave it a 9.5 out of 10 back in 94

Like i said. People, maybe if they're too young to remember or didnt own a genesis and are thinking of how bad the ones after 3 were. But Sonic 3 was right up there w/ Super Mario 3.

My vote is for FF7's effect on people, it turns good people into raving fan boys and all JRPG haters classify it as the standard for all JRPGS. Also Cloud has a reason to act the way he does, I mean his girlfriend is killed by his hero, who has gone bat-shit insane by then and also he finds out his entire life is a lie, [sarcasm]I'd sure be happy -go-lucky after that[/sarcasm].

@Evil Jak, FF6 dropped the crystal collecting bull-shit way before 7,just saying and some plot elements were ripped from previous FF's. Example Avalanche is similar to FF2's Wild Rose Rebellion and FF6's Returners. The characters as you said were good and cloud is interesting but the story was not insanely original.

Basically what I'm trying to get at is FF7 is a good game but the most of the praise is undeserved and if they had dropped all the spin-offs around FF7 and its hype then it might catch less flack.

Also I found Half-life 2 frustrating and un-fun and is possibly more hyped than FF7. It turns nice people in to arrogant twats who look down on other shooters from their Ivory tower of perfection when not too busy pleasuring members of the valve staff and Yahtzee

I was going to put one of the older FF's on there, but I rather have the two people that love or hate a game then love or never played the game.

VII and here's why

Not Hype, not bias, just plain old the previous game was better and graphics don't make up for it.

Ouch man coward, strong words, ever try to get through the original games with 1 party member dead (dont say remakes, remakes lowered the difficulty, also dont say ff2 it was story based not challenge based) try killing chaos in ff1 without a fourth person, and besides, before the whole "EVERYONE CAN LEARN ANYTHING" you had to decide what classes were needed, and, well since ff7 the difficulty went down ff9 proves that, giving the extra party while keeping the difficulty to a low... tisk tisk major eff up, but the four person party was a necessity since not everyone could have a life2 materia on them, only the white mage could sure a paladin in a few select games could have life1 but that was no help later, besides the limit breaks mean a 3 person party isnt even needed i cloud solo'd ff7 and got through due to limit breaks being over powered try soloing ff6 with desperation attacks (not like 8, 8 could be exploited) but 6 you cannot constantly retry and low hp will have you killed, besides I'm not one to constantly hold down circle so it will always have attack command. And I assume most NA havnt played things before ff7 unless they were remakes (lowered difficulty I may add) so you dont know how hard the originals were, trust me saying i NEED 4 members is true but being a coward for it? heh funny, I will let you call me one after you beat the entire series (YES I HAVE NO LIFE I PLAYED EVERY FINAL FANTASY TITLE EVEN SPIN OFFS TO DATE) so yeah, 3 party members = people can learn way more than class excluded and monsters are lower difficulty + overpowered limit breaks = YOU ARE THE COWARD

great now im having a flame war.... kinda >.> either way, think before you defend ff7

I should note i have yet to have a single game over with a 3 person party, so tough luck on the whole "Four person parties are for the people who keep dying on three person parties because there isnt enough people to swarm their enemy and kick his head in like a football hooligan... and yes I am calling anyone who like four person parties over three person parties cowards and you cant argue against it because thats the only logical reason you see the difference!" thing, and FYI I love mages so I never mash attack command >.> BLUE MAGES FTW!

And you say the crystals, but that was not the theme for 2 and 6 and graphicaly better? at least with the sprites i knew what they looked like, at least they didnt have boxes sure the whole 3d WAS a step forward but it wasnt actualy a BREAKTHROUGH until ff8

And how is a Meteor sent by a momma's boy whos sad because he was made up from hundreds of monsters to destroy an UNNAMED planet that was dying anyway a real world issue? and before ff7 the main characters didnt have ridiculous weapons and you say train past the physical limit to save the planet (not quote on quote but close enough) I think a god (chaos) destroying all that is and shall be is reason enough, they all had reason enough (well not ff2 but in ff2 firionel never trained past human limits >.>)

for the record i dont think of anyone as emo I see cloud as a guy with MPS and a inferiority complex sephiroth and cloud are both compensating for something with the oversized swords, but I suppose only people who played ff from the begining and not from 7 would agree 4 person parties were better and ff7 isnt the marvel it was said to be sure its good but its no godlike game (like ff8 but i will leave that alone >.>)

I end with, thanks for reading my wall of text rant, have a nice day, and GO FF2!!!

Was a toss up between Half Life 2 and Final Fantasy VII.

Half Life 2 - I just couldn't get into it. I've got Half life 2, and both the episodes and no matter how hard I try, the game just doesn't grab me, to me it seemed like every other FPS out there. Plus the fact that Valve are money milking it, charging £20 for each "episode" annoys me too.

Final Fantasy 7 - Like everyone else has said, it's over hyped. Quite a few of the characters annoy me now after playing through it twice. Namely the main character, Cloud, who is pretty much an Anti-Social DID patient with the personality of a piece of wood. The story wasn't really that epic in comparison to other RPG's that is out there despite what the fanbase says either. I will say that it did indeed change the future of JRPG's, for example it opened more audiences to the genre, and made it 3d, but by no means is it as good as the hype suggests.

Bravo.

Also, I love how all the FFVII fanboys here either can't spell or are weeaboos.

Perpetuating the stereotype ftw.

wow that's kind of interesting.. heh I still like FF7 though, if not for a new story, but a re-telling of a good story.

I love how people say they couldn't get into Half-life 2, maybe they should start with Half-Life and then try HL2..
You really think that would work? There's practically no correlation between the two stories. And Half-Life 2 is an all round better game.

I count 9 main series Mario games. Two of which have no princess rescuing.

I said FF7, never could finish it but I did enjoy it somewhat.
Yeah, but really, he is in a ton of games lol... Not just main games, but the hundreds of spin-offs.
The guy I was responding to was complaining about the princess rescuing story being overused. I absolutely hate that complaint because Mario games aren't about story. If the captured princess was replaced by a stolen candy bar the game wouldn't change.

If you're not going to like a Mario game it is the gameplay that is at fault, it has nothing to do with the story. And I'm talking to Clirck more than to you, so:

I agree, most people now won't see a old game with old graphics for what it is. One of the reasons I put it on my like like that

I went FF7, i didnt mind the game but i think all the hype i heard about before i played it lessened the impact. That and i much prefered FF8 which i played first.
