Im In seventh grade and HATE homework! But its useful enough. I roughly spend 1-2 hours a day and most of that is in some sort of homework/tutoring club at school. Not because im dumb, but because I have a little sister and older brother which= No focus.

This is kind of an unintentional follow up to my thread about the grading system.

So anywho, I was looking up websites to help me out with an essay I'm working on when I found this:

http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/theendofhomework/

All I've got to say is, REALLY?? I don't know about you guys but a lot of these "arguments" are pretty flawed. How is having a parent sign a slip while a kid goes out and kicks a ball going to improve their grades in school? The statement the author makes about how he does his homework fast so he can sleep doesn't help his case much either.

What do you guys think?

along with that petition check out the intelligent, and incredibly well engaged forum group of that petition. *sarcasm*

Increase difficulty, decrease amount. Nothing makes me rage harder than doing Mickey Mouse work. Remember those sheets in elementary school with 100 multiplication problems on them?

Look, homework sucks. We can all agree on this. But it has to be done. Death and taxes and all that.

Right but some times it is over done, there should be a limit. Maybe no more than an hour or two per subject per night. Sounds reasonable.

The thing is that homework is probably the biggest lesson a school can teach you.
It's the lesson to study.
Because, if you are planning on going on towards university, then you will be studying alot! Each and every day will be a new day and a new pile of homework, and you will need to learn hard so you won't fall behind.
I'm a teenager and I don't like homework, but I will do it anyway.
Why? Because I actually know that it will help me in the future and improve various areas in my brain.
Plus, I think that this petition is the biggest pile of rubbish which I've ever laid my eyes upon.

And this is comming from a teenager.

I believe that people should have homework. It's used to make sure you are actually absorbing the things they teach you rather than having it go right over your head. Now, I disagree with the amount that some teachers give (I once had 8 straight hours of homework, not even joking), but to get rid of it completely would be foolish.

Ehh I don't know. If there was no homework I'd have straight A's (opposed to straight C's), but at the same time I feel it is sort of necessary...

I don't have a problem with homework. I do have a problem with how it's designed.

Homework should not be about learning a particular subject, or a certain set of facts.

Stay with me on this one...

Homework SHOULD be about LEARNING HOW TO LEARN. How to learn better, faster, and more easily.

Let's be honest; nobody needs to use 80% of the stuff they learn in elementary/middle/high school (US System, your nation's structure may vary). What they DO use, and are expected to learn (without being taught, in many cases) is how to learn new things, and apply that knowledge to complete specific tasks.

Even in college, working towards a degree in a technical field, barely use any of the knowledge I was supposed to have gained in High School (mathematics and basic sciences being the exceptions).

What I DO use, CONSTANTLY, are writing skills, reading skills, problem-solving skills, and test-taking skills that I learned and refined throughout K-12 school.

For me (and for most), school is just a means to an end, and that end is NOT LEARNING SPECIFIC MATERIAL. It's learning how to learn, and learning the skills I mentioned above. While you might not remember all the details about how Communism is supposed to work from your 12th-grade government class, all those essays you had to write were good practice for writing budget reports to your boss in your 9-to-5 as an adult.

Bottom Line: Homework should be geared to give students practice in basic skills that are used frequently in academic fields (reading, note-taking, some memorization, and synthesis of ideas). I would also like to see learning strategies taught as its own course in public schools.

Couple things to point out. First off, if I spent 18 years doing homework, then younger generations have to deal with it too. Second, notice all of the grammatical errors in the petition? Stay in school kids, and do your homework.

"When anyone below 18 doesn't sleep the required 8-12 hours, it can stun your growth."

WTF? 8-12 really??
and I don't understand how kicking a ball encourages a good work ethic.

I think there should be homework, but it shouldn't be checked or graded. That's how my AP BC calculus teacher does it, and his students always pull off over a 3 on the AP, usually 4 or 5. This would probably only work for students in honors and advanced classes, for students in standard level courses, homework should be mandatory. I know this sounds very elitist, but that's just how it is.

I was bored, so I decided to correct the grammar errors in the petition.

Homework is ruining the lives of kids everywhere! It can mess up a child's health.

If you stay up and do homework, your you're staying up later, which means your you're sleeping less. When anyone below 18 doesn't sleep the required 8-12 hours, it can stun stunt your growth. If you have a cold, it will last longer. Just because you don't get to sleep.
When i I do homework, i I do it fast so i I can sleep, but I don't learn anything. Even in math, I don't learn anything... Homework Messes messes Kids kids up and Should should NOT be tolerated.

It also encourages obesity. Notice that America has the most highest rate of obesity in children. Why do think that is? Fast food? Yes that helps, but if kids had more time to go outside, and more time to exersize excercise, than then the obesity rate would drop considerably. Most Kids kids that are obese are smart and do all there their homework, therefore, by the time there they're done, they wouldn't be able to go outside or even go on a treadmill, it would be bedtime. By assigning homework, you are supporting obesity in children.

Has anyone ever told you? When your you're a kid, its it's the best 17 years of your life. You should cherish your freedom. What freedom? Freedom to do school work out of school? Yes, children should get good work habits, so instead of written work, maybe tell them to go outside and play kick ball and have a parent sign a slip. By having to get something signed, it would enforce commitment, which is something the USA lacks.

Save the homework for when your you're in college, not kids and teenagers. Let them Cherrish cherish there their childhood, because thats that's somthing something they'll never get back.
In short, this guys poor grammar and deliberate abuse of the English language defeats his entire arguement before it even gets off the ground.

Maybe he should actually do his English homework instead of ranting about having too much.

Yes we need homework. If we didn't have it then either school days during the week would be several hours longer or we'd have to go on weekends. This gives us a bit less free time.
I also like having the ability to plan when I do my homework so I'm not just doing hours of constant work like in school.(apart from 50 minutes of free time during school)
It's also useful for learning, as repetition is the best way to learn something unless you have a photographic memory and answering questions on the same topic or writing out several sentences using whatever grammar point for language classes is an amazing help.

I think that eliminating homework COULD be done, at least for students who can stay on top of their studies. Lets do it this way. A class's grades are based entirely on tests. If you fail or do particularly poorly, it is optional that you can do some extra work to make up some portion of that failure. Heck, I'd suggest that even if you weren't perfect you could do the extra work and make up a portion of your errors. It would be entirely optional, but I think it would help a lot, not only keeping school work within school, but also it would help separate the people who actively want to learn and are just not that smart from the people who don't give a shit. Probably most useful in 9-12 grades where students are solidifying their life personalities, but still. Here's a viable solution. More tests, optional grade-boosting homework.

And seriously, when you grow up it won't be homework that will be eating up your free time, it'll be housework. Pick your poison. I'd rather do the one that betters my intellect and, in the future, my life. And to get a good enough job to pay for that maid service, you'll probably need to do your homework.

Homework is vital! I know its frustrating, I went to Highschool too but it is a very important part of life. Also if there wasn't homework you would be FORCED to stay in school to cover all the content in class. Do you seriously think your teachers and your fellow students want more time in a classroom together?

Also the grammar in the petition doesn't help your cause.

I understand the uses of homework but it should not be 50% of my life, I currently have art mocks coming up and I am spending over 4 hours everyday on prep work for it because some genius decided that the way I developed my idea is more important than the end product.

Also I hate arbritary homework that is there solely for the reason of being there, it does not help me at all and it just ends up in me getting a detention for not doing it, some h/w is useful and some is not, a worksheet for homework every lesson is not useful.
