Well you could not do homework at school because it's called homework.

Sarcasm aside, I think there should be homework. The problem is that so many students have various other activities after school: chores, sports, music practice, fun with friends, and then you pile on more work for 'em? I didn't have this problem because I was lazy and anti-social for the most part in high school but still made good enough grades to get into a decent university. Even then, my homework consisted of worksheets and reading: stuff that could be done after an hour and a half at the most.

It's a subjective matter, so I can only give my experiences with it.

The terrible grammar on that petition tells me that this kid should be getting MORE homework.
I might have signed if the grammar was actually decent....

This very petition is an example of a reason homework could be a good thing.

Homework helps you think through the material you just learned in class. Too much is unnecessary and unwanted, but its important.

There was a survey/report/study/experiment something that showed homework/essays were irrelevant to intelligence...

this makes this petition invalid
Homework is ruining the lives of kids everywhere! It can mess up a child's health.

If you stay up and do homework, you're staying up later, which means you're sleeping less. When anyone below 18 doesn't sleep the required 8-12 hours, it can stunt their growth. If you have a cold, it will last longer, just because you don't get to sleep.
When i do homework, i do it fast so i can sleep, but I don't learn anything. Even in math, I don't learn anything... Homework messes Kids up and should NOT be tolerated.

It also encourages obesity.Notice that America has the highest obesity rate in children. Why do think that is? Fast food? Yes that helps, but if kids had more time to go outside, and more time to exercise, than the obesity rate would drop considerably. Most Kids that are obese are smart and do all there homework, therefore, by the time they're done, they wouldn't be able to go outside or even go on a treadmill, it would be bedtime. By assigning homework, you are supporting obesity in children.
Besides the complete disregard for the english language, most of these arguments make no sense. The sentences are also terribly put together.

Has anyone ever told you? When your a kid, its the best 17 years of your life. You should cherish your freedom. What freedom? Freedom to do school work out of school? Yes, children should get good work habits, so instead of written work, maybe tell them to go outside and play kick ball and have a parent sign a slip. By having to get something signed, it would enforce commitment, which is something the USA lacks.

Save the homework for when your in college, not kids and teenagers. Let them Cherrish there childhood, because thats somthing they'll never get back.

Reasons against homework

1. It fluffs up your grade letting people do bad on tests and still pass
2. It is easily copied allowing students to learn nothing but gain credit
3. It can be overwhelming
4. People can fail a class even when they know the material because of it
5. It wastes resources and class time
6. Causes a lot of work for teachers
7. Cuts into a students time to work/play

Reasons for homework

1. re-enforces knowledge and concept retention

IMO students should not be graded on homework unless their test/project/classwork scores are low. If a student can prove that they are competent then why assign them useless work? If a students needs extra practice then give them homework, but in the end they won't learn much without the instructor there anyway.

Personally Homework never helped me, unless it was reading something from a book/Textbook that we got given. Even then, i have trouble learning from a book, but it helped alot more then writing something for 7th billion time.

But i know for many it does help, so Homework should not stop.

I mean just read the comments on that petition, half of them NEED it.

Only a handful of jobs have work at home, so don't play that card either. that's not even mentioning that homework shouldn't be used as justification for that.
That's because only a handful of jobs are worth having. If you can't manage your time outside of school/the workplace then you deserve a sucky job where you leave it all behind because you can't stand it and regret not sticking in at school.

8-12 hours of sleep?! Seriously?! 17-year-olds don't NEED 12 hours of sleep. Sure, some of us LIKE 12 hours of sleep, but why the hell would this person argue that 8-12 is necessary?
Actually, adolecents require much more sleep than adults because their body is not only repairing daily wear and tear but also building more bone and muscle fibers, not to mention adjusting to new hormonal balances.
Ideally someone in their late teens should be getting about 70 hrs sleep a week. Usually this comes from sleeping all day Saturday.
Adults on the other hand only need about 56hrs a week.

An alarming ammount of students in the US have terrible grades (well below 2.4GPA). Here we get a kid complaining about too much homework? you should be getting MORE homework if you ask me >.>
I think it's because they know they can be underachievers and still pass. Then again it can be argued that an alarming amount of children and teenagers in the U.S. aren't quite the sharpest crayons in the box. :Y
Crayons don't get sharpened...Pencils do though ;)

Hehe sorry :p

This is true. I understand that adolescents need more sleep than adults based on what the sleep is used for. But 12 hours of sleep per night is insane. I think you would be hard pressed to find a doctor that would recommend that any child between the ages of 14 and 18 needs 12 hours of sleep per night.

If you have a problem with homework, don't do it.

Im in highschool and my test scores are so consistent I get As and Bs.

this means the kid is likely getting a better education than me, (hawaii, from what I heard, isn't exactly the best...) and still isn't as smart as I am.

somebody please slap him.

If only homeschooling didn't, in general, leave the child a social mess... I was fortunate to live right by the school so I'd time my breaks with their recess.
Well A) that's not the topic, B) prove it and C) I was homeschooled quite a lot at various stages because the kind of idiot students who want to mess around instead of learning (ie the petition starter) were dragging me backwards. I'm known for my people skills.

Lol, it's a really stupid petition, but I feel like we all just crushed the hopes of like an 8-year-old or something. I mean, the petition lends to the idea that he/she's 17, but there's no way in hell I can believe that after reading it.

I like what my Bio teacher did in high school (just about the only damn thing I liked about him). He gave big ass packets of optional homework. It wasn't for a grade, but of course he would help you if you did it and had questions. This allowed people who knew their different abilities to learn with their own style. I didn't do a damn page of the thing and barely scraped an A- in the class, while other people did every page and got A-A+. They made a trade-off that I didn't consider worth it.

However, giving a ton of mandatory, meaningless homework means that the kids who already know and understand the shit lose motivation to keep working in the class.

So yeah, that's my take on homework. It should be a nice tool to help the student, not busy work to make sure the student is paying attention.

EDIT: Also, grading homework for accuracy is about the dumbest fucking thing I've heard of in school. Homework should be the one place where you can make mistakes without punishment, with tests being the place to, well, test your skills.
