Homework is far from perfect, but in the end probably a necessary evil. I had no use for homework before my last year of Highschool. There was no subject before or at Higher level (Scottish system, ~17 years old) in which I feel the homework benefited me. I learned everything I needed about those subjects in class. As a result, I did homework as quickly as I could. It wasn't counted in my final grade (which was made up of exam marks + coursework) so that just encouraged me to see it as a blight on my free time.

Saying that, it did make it a little bit harder getting into the routine when I went for my final year and the difficulty jumped enough for me to find the extra work helpful.

I guess I support homework, although I think that it is a poor one-size-fits-all solution to getting kids/teens to learn and to teach them about time management.

There SHOULD be homework but teachers need to realize that their kids are in more than just their class (Junior High, High school, and College mostly. But some Elementary schools do this to.)

Way back in highschool (If a year is "way back") I had three teachers that seemed to think their subject was more important than ANYTHING else in the world. (Math, Communications - college level, and US History.) each night we were given so much homework from all three that we didn't have enough time to finish all three plus whatever other homework our normal teachers gave unless we loss loads of sleep (6+ hours of sleep minimum.)

Now homework is good, just not a ton thrown at you from everywhere.

What a whiny complainer. At A-Level in the UK I would get mabye 2 hours of homework a day. What is this illiterate Child's problem?

What does he honestly think University will be like?

If you're serious about going somewhere aka going to university/college then homework is essential. You need to practice the skills and remember the knowledge you've learned or else when you go to sleep your brain will get rid of what it thinks is junk (based on how often you use the information) and in this case it'll probably be the stuff that you've just learned.

I do agree, some teachers set homework just for the sake of setting homework, which I believe is a waste of everyone's time, including the teacher, but a teacher who sets regular homework with a purpose should be encouraged to do this, as it's beneficial to the student.

"Homework makes you fat"? Really?

Oh my God you guys, this just in! If you do your homework.... the terrorists win.

His logic is so unhinged it's hilarious. The way he can seriously talk about getting rid of homework so the American people become less fat and learn commitment is just mind-boggling.
No homework = increase in commitment?

10 bucks says this kid blames homework for being overweight. That or he's trolling.

An alarming ammount of students in the US have terrible grades (well below 2.4GPA). Here we get a kid complaining about too much homework? you should be getting MORE homework if you ask me >.>

I think there should be LESS homework, not none.
A simple 15-20 minutes of homework is fine, and if your getting smarter, it's doing it's job, but right now, I'm bringing home around 2HOURS of work. That's ridiculous.

Sometimes I like homework, sometimes I don't. I like the kind of homework that's interesting, on a subject I'm actually interested in learning about. Then again, I've hardly ever needed homework or studying to learn what's being taught, but if it's in some math subject I'll do it in class where my teacher will explain step-by-step how to solve the problem so that I can successfully solve problems like those in the future.

In World Geography (9th grader here, sup?), I WISH I had homework, say, to study a certain country and whatnot. But we have no homework, just copying locations onto a map during classtime..

Homework needs to interest the student in what he or she is learning, not bore him or her to death.. > >

I think it's because they know they can be underachievers and still pass. Then again it can be argued that an alarming amount of children and teenagers in the U.S. aren't quite the sharpest crayons in the box. :Y

I voted yes, I used to hate homework when I was at school but later in life I see it differently. Homework is useful for the teacher in that is allows them to see if you have understood the concepts explained in a lesson. For a pupil its useful because it tests your abilities and what you have learned.

Besides when you get to college they expect you to do large amounts of coursework, and when you go to University they expect you to do essays with a minimum of 2000 words and thats just the first year. A Dissertation is usually around 12,000 words. All useful training for later life.

As a High School Student, I think this is the stupidest idea I've ever heard. Homework doesn't even take that much time to complete, it usually takes only an hour to complete. Sure, I get a little stressed, but that's because I start procrastinating. Plus, how can this guy pin the fault of obesity on homework? My school gives homework every day and I can assure you, absolutely nobody in my school is obese, and neither is the majority of students in other High Schools that give out homework.

Whoever created this petition is either lazy, has absolutely no care for his own education or the education of other kids, or both. And judging by the spelling errors in his argument against homework, I think it's even more reason why schools should give kids homework.

Speaking as a computer teacher, in my class at least I would never assign homework because it would almost REQUIRE to be done during study hall. You can't expect every student to have all the programs you do at school. As for other classes, it's truly just added stress. Spending 7 hours each day in class is bad enough. Let the kids study for tests at home and perhaps RECOMMEND problems to help with this but don't make them do something that just makes them angry and creates more work for you in the long run.

I've always felt there should be a middle ground. What I mean by this is that homework is given out as normal but students are also given time to do it in school during the normal school day. I know in some cases people get study hall periods to do this but this is not always the case. This would allow the advanced students to finish their work before going home. Those who work at a slower pace would have time to get much of the work done, thus requiring less of their "free" time at home. It would also give students a chance to ask questions that may arise during the homework but not during lecture.

It?s not that bad.

Not to mention it helps out in a lot of classes especially math and chemistry (for me at least.)

I think the main problem with homework is that it isn't used effectively.

Thinking of homework, handing it out and marking it are all treated like chores by teachers, and most of it is pointless busy work with nothing beneficial for the students (ie. demonstrating a sound knowledge of what they've learned).

Good homework may feel annoying and as though its eating into your free time, but you should still get something out of it. I still look back on some of the pointless things I had to do and just think "what the fuck?"

There should be at least some homework. Assignments that reinforce the concepts taught in class, assignments that test and exercise the abilities of the student, ensuring the growth of knowledge.

However, busywork, or homework that serves no purpose and teaches the student nothing, should not exist. All it does is stress out all students, both good and bad.

I say this as I am currently floundering in a sea of homework, gasping for air and relaxation in the midst of what I think should be a wonderful, carefree time of year. And for the record, I am a straight A student. And I'm struggling. Because of homework. :(
