I like it until it gets to the point where on the drums all you can hear is the double bass, the guitarists have no idea what they are playing, and the vocalist just does a low pitched growl the whole song.

I hate this kind of "metal"
agreed fully. whitechapel (what ive heard from them at least) is also guilty of this. the closest i can get to that with ears intact would be job for a cowboy. embedded kicks ass. otherwise, my favorites are as i lay dying, trivium, the black dahlia murder, and killswitch engage. (i know this as metal, forgive any minor genre confusions)
Technically, they can be considered Metal, although they all fall into the Metalcore category, except for Black Dahlia, that are a Metalcore / Death Metal blend. In fact, Killswitch are pretty much the band that popularized the genre, after their "Alive or Just Breathing" (which is the only album i can tolerate).

I used to be quite into the shouty stuff, nowadays Megadeth/System of a Down is about my limit, tho I still have a soft spot for Lawnmoer Deth, purely because they obviously were in it just to have fun.

I'd however say that about 75% of death metal is derivative shit. 20% is good and 5% is genuinely great stuff.

Pretty much the same as every other genre of music.

Jazz is supposed to be one of the most creative genres out there, but you still end up with Jamie Cullum and his style of elevator music for midgets topping the jazz charts, classical music is one of the most revered genres ever, yet when you together 4 insurance salesmen with haircuts together to cover TV ads in a faux opera style, yes G4 I mean you, it knocks all the Beethoven and Mozart out of the way.

Speaking of classical btw, I LIKE classical, if a sandbox game has a classical station, there's nothing better for committing repeated vehicular murder to. However, why is it seemingly most often classical music snobs who so look down on popular music, accusing it of just being 'covers knocked out to make money', when if you look at any popular classical CD, there'll rarely be a single damn original piece on there, just another set of recordings of the same dozen tracks everyone else does? Nessun Dorma, 1818, Beethoven's 5th, that beer ad with the monkey, etc.

Now I know there's original classical works out there, I'm just saying it suffers from the same problems as all other genres, that the masses prefer mediocrity.
Speaking of Jazz:

When it comes to Classic, i lean towards the heavier stuff, like O Fortuna, Mars, from Holst's Planets, Wagner, etc. There was an interesting compilation i remember seeing with quite a few good ones. Classical Thunder, or Thundering Classics, something like that.

Let's see. Any idiot with half a brain and knows two notes on a guitar and can just scream can make death metal. So yeah, I think that portrays my feelings on that subject.

The only band I give any credit to is Mudvayne, but that is because they actually have a little thing called talent.
I know, i know, you have been quoted enough over this, but i just remembered i could drop 2 little vids to illustrate our point:

As passionate lover of all types of music out there, I love death metal.

Pig Destroyer, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Between the Buried and Me, The Chariot, Boris, Converge, Cynic, The Faceless, The Locust, Gojira, ect.

Not all of those are technically death metal, but I don't give a shit about sub-genres or genres in general.

It's alright, as long as they have good riffs it's good music. I haven't really found anything that powerful in the genre though and the most of it is screamo which I sometimes find irritating.

Favourite death metal band at the moment is Deathspell Omega, if you haven't heard them before then you should if you like death metal in general.

Post your thought on Death Metal here, I like it because of its technical skill, the vocals are fun, but I can only stand them for a certain amount of time (More than Screamo though).

Please don't flame me or any other people!!! :D

~Reapd
Can you give a few examples of bands, I know a few people who have very different ideas about what exactly death metal is

For the most part, yes.

Though there is some death metal that I just can't listen to- find it very annoying

I think its hilarious, the bands are so cute. With their long hair and growling vocals trying so hard to be taken seriously.

But seriously, i do like some Death Metal. But most of it drips with so much cheese i refuse to touch it.

Not familiar with too much death-metal, but always a fan of Opeth, especially their "Damnation" album - it's definitely not your average death-metal, but the technical skill and emotion is amazing.

Screaming, screaming, drum solo, guitar, more screaming, end. And yet it's still music.

I prefer softer songs.

Music is defined as a collection of sounds put together in such a way as to please or displease the ear. You didn't like it? That means it's music. Your argument is invalid.

Going to bed now, before I start arguing with everyone who says mean things about my beloved Metal.
it's funny because i said i don't consider it to be music, not that i didn't like it. in fact i'm totally neutral about gruff 30 year olds hitting guitars and drums as hard and fast as they can while doing their best Cookie Monster impressions into a microphone. my opinion, i say what i like and i like what i say. you wanna be right? go fap in a corner to your Carcass albums.

I don't understand why there are so many sub-genres of metal. It doesn't make sense to me. I listen to the metal I think sounds cool and has meaning behind it. I don't care if its black, melodic, death, core, etc. Some people obviously think I'm a retard for thinking this, but I like different sounds. I can't listen to one type of metal for a long time- it gets stale and I don't want to ruin the music.

Anyone else hate explaining the differences between scream-o and metal?
...Wait, you say you don't understand why there are so many sub-genres of metal... and then make a point to mention how you can't listen to any one of them in exclusion and prefer to have an ever shifting variety? You do realize that pretty much completely invalidates your initial point, right?

And explaining the difference between screamo and metal is easy - screamo isn't metal, it's an offshoot of hardcore punk that involves more screaming than usual. Now if you'd brought up explaining the difference between screamo and metalcore, well there I could partly agree with you as metalcore is an unholy fusion of hardcore punk rock with metal that borrows the screams, so they both end up sounding like horrible noise to almost everyone apart from their very niche audience (who I think are sort of crazy, near constant screaming is really unpleasant to listen to for any length of time. At least with the constant growling you can generally imagine it's the Cookie Monster singing metal lyrics and then it becomes hilarious).

Horrid. The vocals always annoy me.

I'd rather listen to electronic music. And I HATE electronic music.
This. I hate people screaming in my music, if I wanted to hear that I would shove glass in someones eye and throw them off a skyscraper.

Can a fan explain to me whats to like about the vocals? That's the only thing that consistently keeps me away. Once the growling/screaming starts, all sense of pitch and melody are lost.

I agree with the first guy......... Death Metal takes way more skill with almost every instrument than other genres...... Like *pukes* Pop
You are kidding me right? More skill? I dont know if I should dive into this subject, because it will just result in flaming, but I gotta get this out.

Vocals: Rawr rawr rawr rawr rawr. If you can understand one word of any song like that the first time through, I commend you.

Guitar. Repetitive 2 to three chords, just shredded very fast.

Bass: see above

Drums: One of the only almost bearable part to it, but with waaaaay to much bashing on a symbol. A friend of mind in a band like this once told me if he forgets a few lines, he hits on any random drum or symbol piece and no one knows the difference.
Could you please give these songs a listen?
Didn't listen to the first one, but the second one was actually rather decent.

It really depends on the band, but for the most part, the only thing even potentially redeeming about the vocals are their rhythm. Otherwise, you are right, they have no tone or melody.
I think some bands just get together and none of them can really sing, so they decide on a growler. For example, Ensiferum http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cO4QqaoFuso
I know they aren't typical death. They're prog and folk as well, but the vocals stick out like a sore thumb. Still, they're easy to ignore.
One vocalist who sings in the death style that I do like is the chick from iwrestledabearonce. I'm just damn impressed by her ability to growl so low. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvRvtHeuoUo She definitely manages to sound as low and brutal as many dude singers.
But yeah, for the most part there is nothing to like about the vocals. I just listen to stuff where the music is impressive enough to make it worth ignoring the vocals.

The vocals make it terrible. Instrumental metal is good though. Just not in my top 10 music genres.
