My friend has just collected all the flags in Assassin's Creed....for achievements no less, but what's the point?
Spending hours on a game you've already finished doing a tedious task which reaps no benefits yet gives you a number....why?
I'd understand if after getting every achievement he gets a theme or an avatar outfit but nope...just a number.

Don't get me wrong some games do this well, Mass Effect had bonuses for each achievement you earned, Splosion Man and Halo Waypoint give you avatar items, Final Fantasy XIII on Ps3 gives you themes for doing different trophies, some arcade games give you gamer pics but I can't think of anymore.

Wouldn't it be nice if, instead of 1000g/100%, you got an avatar item or a theme, something no one can buy and is just an indication of how dedicated the person was or is everyone happy with just a number next to a game to say they've finished it?

I like Trophies and Achievements, especially the creative ones. I like the ones that tell you to do things that you wouldn't normally do, and they can increase one's playtime of a game.

i like them, just because they get me to play games more. i don't care enough about them to try and get every one, but they're a nice little bonus for doing good things.

I only do it if they are easy or for games I really like. All my favourite games I have 100% on and the rest I will get as and when the opportunity arrives. I will never 100% all my games.

As for why? A small case of Obsessive Compulsiveness I guess, I like looking at my played games and seeing them 100% completed. Sure it doesn't give you anything, but it doesn't hurt anyone.

The only thing which disturbs me are people who buy/rent games just for the achievements, I have a friend who does this and he won't put a game he likes in the disk drive if he can't 100% it. He says he'd like to play Mass Effect 2 but won't because 100%ing it would put it at 1030g's.

That said, I hate achievements and think they have partially ruined the fun in gaming. For those about to say "Well ignore them then" I shall quote myself:

I like some achievements, and really don't care about others. If its a simple to get achievement (like complete a mission, acquire all available weapons, stuff like that) I'll go get 'em. But if its something that wants me to go way out of my way, do some stupid, uninteresting bull crap for an hour before getting back to the actual mission, I won't bother.

some are fun to try really e.g. just cause 2: free fall from the top of the map. But some are just pointless. But I like your idea of getting things like themes and stuff for doing them that would be good

I like them, they give you a little extra push in order to complete every thing. When you do some thing clever, they pop up and say "Yes, we acknowledge the fact that you just some thing clever, here's some gamer points, good for you -clap-" which I find a nice little reward. Sure they don't provide any thing special but neither did the high-score count in the arcades really... just a dick waving contest. Besides, it makes people less likely to cheat.

I do greatly agree with OP though, we should have at least one avatar item or theme pack, just some thing special for earning all achievement points in a game. That would give people a little extra incentive to play.

I will go after achievements I find either interesting or fun. I like them, as it makes you consider other things the game has to offer.

I really enjoy some of the unique or difficult challenges they throw out there. Most collection quests are boring though, unless they give you cool abilities.

I like achievements. And hey, If you got an extra unlockable to show off for doing ALL of them, that'd be pretty sweet. Although, the company might fall prey to 'Recon syndrome'.

I like trophies, but I'm not obsessed with getting 100%. I only platinumed one game and that was Dirt 2, which doesn't have stupid and unreasonable achievements. Otherwise most games sit at 75-85% because I see no point in the super tedious ones. However, there are reasons to do them. Some people are "trophy whores" and like to compare their trophy level against others. Also looks good straight up comparing game for game. Finally, maybe you only have a limited number of games so rather than replay the game again, getting one of those difficult trophies is something worth doing because it's still something "new" in the game. That's why, on my N64, I continued to play Zelda: OoT for a month collecting every golden skultula and heart piece. And obviously this was long before you could actually share your completion skills ;)

Yay.

This 76,000+ GS was hard work, damn it.

Now, as for 1000/1000. FUCK NO.

Japanese games are ridiculous with their completion requirements. I'm not playing Vesperia more than once, damn it. As good as it was...And Bayonetta on Infinite Climax? HELL NO.

As others have said I enjoy them for how they increase the replay value and how they force me to try techniques that I would have never tried otherwise, but it would be very nice to see developers actually give things like avatars, themes, etc...Although it is still fun to go through my friends list and see how far behind me they are.

I like it when it happens by chance, but I hate it when I see someone keening up the achievements for a game.

I love the achievements, and they add more play time and interesting challenges to games. While having insanely hard or time-consuming achievements irritates me, it won't keep me from playing a game that I want to. I played Ghostbusters knowing that some of the achievements are glitched and can't be obtained.

The way you're saying it makes it seem bad to keep playing Assassins Creed after you finish it.
That's crazy.

Anyway, OT: I don't care for achievements.
But if it's a good game, I want to do EVERYTHING in it.
No not at all, play a game as much as you like but say achievements didn't exist, my friend wouldn't have wasted hours and the cost of a guide to do something that gives no real reward.

Funny you mention Vesperia, this is actually 1 game I'd quite like to 1000/1000 for no reason other than, it's pretty much my third favourite game this gen, I've 1250/1250 Oblivion and still play it and I'm working on Final Fantasy XIII because well, it's what I do with Final Fantasy games, I think my Vesperia score is 785 or something and I've played it loads.

Other than those 3 the only 2 games I care about getting 1000/1000 are Lost Odyssey (I missed one chest and I'm not investing another 100 hours for 1 achievement and Eternal Sonata, this bugs me, I think I have 17/22 achievements and my score for that game is only 300-odd, to get the last ones I fear I have to play it through twice more....urrrrrrrrfgh (so I'm not doing either of these lol)
