there are draft-loopholes for males too.. " sole heir" claims, " physical/emotional/mental disability" and a few others can by " U.S" law get you out of it...then again, if drafted you still have many tests to pass after before they actually use you, and can be discharged there too.

As a woman, I get a free card...I think more so because Though I have US citizenship, I'm still born and raised in the UK, and a subject of the crown..and if I recall correctly, unless your in some " exchange program" between two allied forces, you can't be drafted.

I dont know if such a program exists anymore, I just remember that my grandfather " who was an officer for HMRN, served on a few U.S carriers as part of some weird program.

I was shot 3 times - in my left leg, in my right knee and in my stomach - i got shot in the leg in a hunting accident, it wasn't fatal but hurt like hell. During a marksmanship contest a bullet ricocheted and hit me in the knee, i still have the scar to prove it. It made no permanet damage. I was shot in the stomach during a wedding by a drunk idiot - it also didn't make any permanent damage. It is only horrible the first time, you get used to it. I could handle it.

Also, a friend of mine was shot by a policeman during a robbery, because he was running my way to great me (we hadn't seen each other for 2 months so he was pretty excited) and the cop confused him for the robber. It was an accident, he survived, everything was ok, but it was a very ugly day and restless night for me waiting in the hospital to see what will happen to him, hoping for the best. Worst of all, we couldn't go drink in our favoured bar for another month, doctors orders - although we still laugh when someone mentions the accident.

So, satisfied? And a didn't call anybody a coward. Sometimes, shit just happens, and you hope for the best.

I'd probably shoot myself in the foot, either that or in the interview I would mention how I can't wait to get my hands on a weapon so I can go on a killing spree in my own base.
Better yet, I would pretend to be a Quaker.
Yeah I am almost on the same boat as you but I would go on the killing spree with no one knowing that I was going to do it. I would ruin the army that does forceful drafts. To bad that isn?t an option.

I'd just like to point out, for all those who are against fighting, that in most modern wars civillians usually suffer far more than soldiers. In event of a major conflict, you are probably screwed what ever you do, but I would much rather be trained than not.

It disappoints me to see such a low level of courage here sometimes, either you fight or someone else has to fight for you. We all die eventually, better to live a shorter life of meaning then twenty more years as a coward which serves nothing but himself.
Dead heroes are all well and good as long as I'm not one of them. If by some miracle I managed to bypass the physical status needed then I'd still probably end up with the Harry Flashman crying in a corner result.

Front line all the way!

However I'd have it put on record that I'm not going to war for my country but for my friends and family.

I must admit, I'm a bit surprised at apparent lack of patriotism or willingess to protect their friends/families amongst the Escapists. I mean, almost 20% would actually leave their lives, friends and families behind and leave for a neutral country.

Umm, wow. Didn't expect that. Sure, the distribution is affect by the small amount of answers, but still.... over 20% would leave the country or rather go to jail than serve their country during an international armed conflict. really, i can't overstate how unexpected that result looks to me.

Where's the "Surrender the instant the enemy attack" option?
What are you, Fre... Okay, that's too easy.

I'm allergic and I have high blood pressure. Which is ironic, because I could easily be a sniper thanks to my aim.
Someone already beat you to the French pun, heh ;)
Yeah, I know... that's because it's too easy.

All I can say is if I was forced into the military 'that sucks for them'

Now ten years ago when I was 19... that'd be different I wanted to be a driver so I guess I'd do the 'combat support'

Run for it.
Breaking your arm hurts.
Getting your arm broken by a very hot metal object nearly at the speed of sound REALLY hurts.

I am sorry, but why the hell would you want to protect your country? I mean, I can understand friends and family etc, etc, but your country?

And not only that, but why do you think your family would stay? If they have more than two brain cells, they'd leave asap as well.

I'm not too surprised. War is hell, and there is nothing heroic or honorable about dying alone in a field with your entrails hanging out. But I think George C. Scott playing Patton said it best; "When you stick your hand into a bunch of goo, that a moment before was your best friends face...you'll know what to do."

People can say all they want about not wanting to fight someone else's war or that they're a pacifist, but if someone's country ever got invaded, it would take a pretty sad person to abandon their friends, family, or home to an aggressor.

I'd fight for my country. Our government is a bunch of greedy corrupt assholes, but at least they're American, and subject to American laws. I'll be damned before I let myself be ruled by a foreign power. Vladimir Putin in particular. But granted, nationalistic feelings alone would probably have me running to a neutral nation. I'm more concerned about my family and my town.

And not everyone has the capability to leave. And even if you do, where would you go? Yeah a neutral country might take you in. But who wants to live in a refugee camp the rest of their life?

Combat support. I actually did an RAF training course at my school for five years and was a Sergeant by the end, I did want to join the RAF but they preferred if I joined straight from school and I wanted to do university instead. I'd probably be willing to do military service, but I wouldn't go out of my way to join up now. However, forced service, I'd be fine with. I personally think the UK needs to bring back National Service, compulsory and has to be done before someone's 21st birthday. Stupid Government...

Sorry but I have to ask, whats all this nonsense about aggressors and being ruled but a foreign power?. Because I don't recall the topic being about whether you would defend your country from an invasion. I read something about what you would do if drafted for a likely future conflict, it says nothing about where this conflict will be fought. hey, maybe your country's the aggressor. Don't assume you'll be the good guy, and then see if you're so willing.

I'm sorry, but I happen to like my country. Sure, it might be small, lacks sunlight most of the year and can get hella cold during winter, tax rates are high, but I like this country. The people here are nice enough, my life is here, plenty of good memories and lots of forests and lakes I don't want to see ruined. The government, I had a hand in their democratic choosing. If I don't like things, I can try to change them. My travel to and from this country isn't exactly restricted. I have practically free healthcare and enjoy the fruits of western know-how. There are no fees for education. And I like it.

Add my friends and family living here and I'd be among the first in line if the call comes. I might not actually have the stomach and nerve required for intense combat, but I've already received 12 months worth of training for a post as a medical sergeant. And come war, I'd do the job I was trained for without complaint, be it near frontlines or away from them.

War is hell, that I agree on. There is nothing pretty about it. in war, there are no good ways to die. But if an enemy comes knocking at your borders, someone has to be there to give him the appropriate response.

After all, for evil to triumph, nothing else is required but for good men to do nothing. And if the people I elected to put on power decide that evil is afoot the country next door, I'd march there as well.

If a such a war happened and I felt that the cause was justified, then I would be combat support. I would be willing to help out those fighting, like as a medic or something. I would take this training as being a doctor, a technician, or a cook, as these skills will always be needed, even after a war, and thus I feel this would be the best way I could support my country.
