I dislike JRPGs for one main reason, something is always lost in translation. Another thing, the only JRPG i like is the tales series due to its co op fuction but they recycle the same plot over and over and over.

Well I don't hate them but they are not my cup o' tea. Usually they have a whole lot of annoying text I find myself flicking through and the characters and Japanese/anime what not I find unappealing.

The game play is good but I get sick of using healing potions or recovery spells and find myself usually slaughtering thousands of mobs only to find out the big boss is not affected by a lot of my normal attacks, discovering later it is mostly chance and I have to wait for them to screw up.

I'll buy them if the seem to have avoided the standard JRPG over-the-top insanity and/or melodrama. That aside, I'm not against the occasional melodrama, when applied correctly.

Like them, but not as much as 5 year ago. I understand the flaws, particularly in JRPGs with Random Battles and/or Turn-Based combat. Their abundance of plot I don't mind so much since reading is my second favorite hobby right next to gaming. Of course if it's heavy on redundant dialogue (a few prominent culprits come to mind) I'll get annoyed. Even more so if said dialogue is voiced poorly.

Take the last JRPG I just finished- Wild Arms 3. Picked it up for cheap at a Flea Market because I heard it was the best of all the Wild Arms games, a series generally considered to be mediocre among JRPG franchises (though the original one had enough of a cult following to warrant a remake).
Despite featuring both the aforementioned annoyances, like TWEWY it does things different from it's counterparts- the Migrant System allows you to skip a certain number of battles if you need to and the fact that everyone performs their actions at the same time a la X-Com makes battles less stale. The plot structuring is a depature as well, having at least 3 character groups each with their own agendas.

Basically I'd get more into JRPGs if their developers listened more to complaints made towards their foibles. Since their original innovation, leveling up characters and equipment, is now used in every game and their dog they'll have to continue to change to meet consumer demands or be eventually restricted to the idiosyncracies of their homeland... I once heard the release of a new Dragon Quest game is an automatic holiday over there.

I don't like turn based gameplay. Simple as that. The only game that has done it well is Pokemon and that was because it reminded me of a tabletop or a card game.

I think JRPG's are okay once you've find the good ones, like Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy...Advance Wars: Days of Ruin was good, Valkyria Chronicles was great.

To me they feel a little interchangeable. I don't really like the stories, the turn based combat sucks and I'm not a fan of the art-styles.

Considering that most of them have the same story ((Evil Guy/Corp tryign to rule world, efeminate male lead, a few good broods)), All of them feel like the last. Not a big fan of turn-based action, but the few that take innovation to the concept ((The addition system in Legend of Dragoon is a good example)) get good marks in my book. Not a huge fan of JRPGs, but there a good few.

I like to play them, but the grind sometimes gets to me, also I have a bad habit of overwriting the same save game, which if you save in the wrong spot, like right before a boss battle, and then you find out that your characters are to low level then your pretty much screwed.

That's what kept me from finishing Final Fantasy X, on second thought that's what kept me from finishing most JRPG's I've tried to play, I'd back myself into a corner where the only viable option would to be to restart the game, I don't learn do I?

I used to love them back in the Final Fantasy X era, but now they are boring to me. I haven't bought any since, but I have played demos and played at buddies' houses. I voted for the westerns because recently they've been amazing.

But I still love anime to death. Here's to hoping for a western RPG with JRPG-style visuals and characters.

huge fan of them...but i'm kinda disappointed that so many of the strategy/tactics based ones seem to be flooding the market these days. oh, and i actually think they are beginning to get too cutesy sometimes.

I love some (Golden Sun 1 & 2, FFVII) but overall, I find it's the least innovative genre. Not to bash, I just find that they fall into cliches as easily as fps's fall into WWII.
