Weapon of choice would be swords, even though it has no chance at all against firearms.
I do have a hidden blade though. Does that count as a dagger or other?

I like swords and am good with them.

Spears are quite possibly superior, and certainly deserve more historical credit. It's a bit like the Hurricane and Spitfire that way. The Hurricane did the majority of the work but most of the films are about the flashier Spitfire.

The quarterstaff is not a weapon I know how to use well, but it'd be a good one to learn because the garden centre sells them (under the Fenceposts brand name) so in the unlikely event of me having to grab a weapon and rush to the aid of some Hapless Citizen being assaulted at the supermarket, they'd be right there for me. Also they're ****** hard to get past with a sword.

I like rifles and am good with them. They have their uses in hunting for food and vermin control.

I am some good with automatic pistols. They're useful in short-range and/or confined-space fighting where speed and mobility matter more than accuracy and they're portable.

I can reliably hit a barn from the inside with a revolver. They're reliable machines and easy to learn to use.

Knives are really good for skinning and cleaning deer and rabbits, and for silent take-downs from behind, but they're not a weapon with which I'd fight. In a knife-fight, both of you wind up in hospital, and maybe one goes to intensive care but at least one goes to the morgue.

I'm in England. We can legally carry a profane vocabulary but we can get in trouble for using it. Actually, we can have shotguns, rifles, bows, crossbows, swords, spears, knives, axes, maces and even some pistols, but it's not Alabama. Considering we're a bit smaller than Manitoba or Alberta and have a population going on 70 million, we're a long way from Texas, too. There just aren't that many places you can lose a rifle bullet without significant risk of ruining someone's evening. We can have "silencers" / moderators / noise attenuators / muzzle brakes / recoil compensators and so on. Keeping it accurate is always good and keeping it quiet is both sensible from a vermin-stalking point of view and, crucialy to Britons, polite.

I usually would have a pair of butterfly knives in my satchel (spoof). I can't think of any country that would allow you to carry long knives or swords with you apart from Japan

.44mag Smith and Wesson, M1 Carbine, Filed Down .12 gauge, a whole mess of pointy stabby things, a Sa Tjat Koen and a baseball bat with a few nails in it.

And yes, I have my concealed carry permit.

I once went through a stage of carrying a concealed little baton up my sleeve because I'd been recently attacked on the way to my regular bus-route and it was the only way my parents would calm down.

Other than that, no. I take martial-arts in the hope that I don't have to pull out something heavy or pointy to keep myself safe, and the best option (if possible) is long legs and plenty of panic to get the crap out of there.

Needs gunsword option.

Also the poll seems at odds with the questions asked in the OP. For the record I don't carry a weapon because I'm in Australia so no guns just carried around on you all the time and knives seem more likely to get me into trouble as I have no training/experience using them offensively.

Also I can't be bothered, the worst I've seen are brief fist fights and I doubt I'll see much worse.
I've got a cricket bat next to my bed in case of zombie attacks or random break-ins, unlikely as they are. But really, the cricket bat's only next to my bed because that's where it fits best.

I don't go outside enough in "dangerous" places to really need to carry a weapon with me. If some guy axes down my front door and tries to kill me, I'll just throw kitchen knives and heavy plates at him for a bit before hitting him senseless with a chair.

I know kung fu...and other Chinese words.

No, seriously, while I do not possess one as of yet, I intend to get a Schiavona (that's backsword or basket-hilted broadsword if you're wondering) for the blend of elegant design and effectiveness. When a gentleman fights, good people, it is as much about image as it is about honour.

On that note, I'm curious about Iajutsu....it's a Japanese martial art centred around blocking or striking with a blade in the same motion as you draw it.

Yes I do not go anywhere without some sort of weapon accessible to me. Granted 99% of the time that a pretty basic pocket knife or machete, but still.

My home however is becoming a small armory. To the point that I sleep with a sheathed machete in the bed, a 835 mossberg 12 gauge within 2 feet of the bed, A tommy hatchet in the bathroom and beyond that there is basically something that can be used as a weapon in damn near every corner of the house.

Im not sure if its overzealous preparation for the coming zombie hordes, or being 6 inches away from being murdered that made me like this. Must be the zombies. Always the zombies.

I'm not yet old enough to carry a concealed handgun, and being in a "gun-free" college means that I wouldn't be able to walk around campus with it anyway, but that would be what I would carry if I had the ability do. I've been to the range several times and grew up with my dad semi-frequently taking his guns out just to test my gun safety knowledge. Great stuff, but far out of my price range as of now.

Currently, I legally carry essentially a small hunting knife, despite me not being a hunter, for both defense and practical reasons. At my work there are plenty of times when I need to get it out to open something, and it is nice to have something to help me in an emergency, to, say, cut through a seatbelt, etc.

If we're talking a zombie apocalypse, baseball bats and shotguns are my weapons of choice =D

I don't carry/collect weapons and I'm pitifully untrained and unskilled in combat, but I've got nothing against them.

If I had to choose, I'd use a gun.

Hey? NSW is about 3.5 times the size of the UK, which is about the same size as Victoria.

Oh, and yeah, quarterstaffs are seriously under-rated weapons. They have a massive advantage over more or less any other hand to hand weapon, so long as you have room to move.

I've honestly never felt the need to carry a weapon around with me. To be honest, I imagine it would only cause more problems than if I weren't carrying one.

I'm just curious about what you think about weapons. Do you carry any to protect yourself, and if so why? Do you refuse to carry anything because of some moral or religious taboo?

I don't know. I was watching a knife show and wondered what your stance is/was. Its late and I'm bored.
I have a home-made mini cattle-prod that will seriously deter anyone dumb enough to get close, it runs at 400v/1 fraud and recharges in about 8 seconds it isnt lethal, but it will sting like a ***** and is powerful enough to ark weld itself to metal surfaces it's pretty-much equivalent in pain to having an intense steam burn on a small area but leaves little to no permanent damage

it's probably less lethal than physically hitting someone because you cant cause internal damage
( with the obvious exclusion of chest hits on those with heart conditions )

i do not and never intend to carry anything that is lethal, its a pretty stupid policy in my opinion especially for guns or knives cause someone can creep up on your ass and nab it

An English oak war staff is probably the best Melee weapon in existence, it has exactly the right balance of weight and stiffness to be used by hand if it has a nice grip area and steel bands you could conceivably take down anyone armed with anything short of bows or guns
'but lugz, swords / axes' no!.
the point of a staff is to deflect swords it will do so unless it is an inferior twig
and it would take several hits from a very sharp axe to cut one in mid air, if you could even hit it
why? because it will move out of the way, it's not on a chopping board or attached to a tree
but yes, it requires space to move and for in house or personal defence i would say it's not ideal for that reason

I was born with two weapons on the ends of my arms, I dont need any more. But if war is ever on the horizon, you can never get enough of them...Boy do I love flamethrowers.

I think all weapons should be outlawed. That would help keep crimes down, at least in an ideal world, but I know it wouldn't change a thing in this one. One can dream, I suppose.

I don't have weapons, I don't need any and they're heavily restricted. If I did somehow get into a situation where I need one I'd have to pick orbital lasers. I'd probably get caught in the blast, but it'd be damn awesome.
