Male with commonly female characters ...

Why? Dunno ... I used to play 3rd person RPGs for a long while, so ... needed something nice to look at, I guess. *go "better armor = more flesh shown"!*

I usually play as both if game holds my interest enough. Sometimes I only play female though, femshep for instance, male shep is in my opinion just crappier character.
i'm commander shepard and this is my least favorite post on the thread.

OT: i'm a guy and i always play a guy. i've played female before, and it just doesn't sync with me.

you have to spend HOURS in most games staring at the characters backside--- so for me, a bloke, I'll make a female character.

I'm a guy and I figure if I'm going to be staring at someones arse for +20hrs it should be a female one, so I always create a female character.

Right so I've re-rolled on Skyrim (Again) and out of my three characters only one shares the same sex as me; male.
So I want to know how many people gender swap in RPG's, or any game that lets you customize a character and why? I don't want to hear the endless parade of men saying "Herr if I want to stare at an ass for X-amount of time it might as well be a chicks"

I for one nearly always have my first character as female which is slightly odd as I love role playing and letting myself become the character (which would be much easier to slip into if me and it shared the basic genetic parts), coming up with back-story and motives behind my character is half the fun for me so I really don't know why I am always drawn to being a female first (other than in Mass Effect, I always play FemShep as I much prefer Jennifer Hale as a voice actress.)

Also, I know a lot of guys play women but I am intrigued to find out if just as many women play men as in my experience most girls also play women.

EDIT: For the my facetious among you, I mean what sex are you drawn to when you first start the game, I'm not talking multiple playthroughs here as I am sure pretty much all of us dabble in both sexes... if you catch my totally innocent drift.
I usually go male, but sometimes I will go female if it fits with my story and she is not some one dimensional person that plagues many females in games...

Um, you need a "Play as Both option."

Right now 3 out of my 4 characters in Skyrim are Males (I'm male), but the one I've put the most time into is female (a kick-ass, Redgard Knight).

I usually play male. All of my Mass Effect characters have been male and when I played WoW, I rarely made a female (and I usually deleted her if I did). However, after playing the TOR beta, I actually think my main is going to be a female. I'm not sure why, to be honest.

there are nearly 9 times more men in the thread then there are females, according to the poll.

OT: I a male, and for the first play through I always play as a male and am a bad guy. Then, if the game is good enough to merit a second play through, I am good and play as a female

Why is there no "both" option?

For me it depends, so sometimes I'm male, sometimes I'm female. Like my Shepard is male, my skyrim character is a male breton (Next will be a female elf, the one after that will probably be a nord), my SWTOR characters that I have rolled have been all female as I like the voice actors over the male, except for my counsler who was male, and I'll be rerolling my SW as male because of Jaesa.

umm... I can't recall an RPG where I've had the choice, and only made one character. I actually go about 50-50. Call it habit from years of DMing.

As a rule, I tend to play female in RPGs (I am male!) just because it seems more interesting somehow. I guess I just kinda like going against the MALE ACTION HERO idea that most games use. I also find character interactions more interesting, somewhat.

MMOs, on the other hand, I play male. I don't like to misrepresent myself.

Im male and I usually play male characters for no reason in particular. Maybe because I identify with them more? Im not sure really. However there are times where Ill play a female instead. For example Shepard from Mass effect. I cant stand male sheps voice but femsheps is not only great but really fits the character I usually play. When SWTOR hits Ill likely be playing a female trooper and imperial agent because I dont think the male voices are very good

Other times I might play a female for roleplaying reasons. For example my first New vegas courier was female. Her backstory being an ex-enclave operative who left because I interpreted the character as gay and she couldnt find a partner within her enclave cell and combined with the aspect that their group probably wanted her to breed didnt sit well with her

So my answer is Other: I play both for a variety of reasons

I play a male probably 90% of the time, and I'm not just talking about my first playthroughs. I'm not sure why, but I find playing a female just ..off. It probably stems from my time playing Guild Wars years ago when I was younger and just getting into RPGs in general. I heard of some guys reasons of playing a girl as the whole "staring at a girls butt is more appealing than staring at a guys" and I thought I'd try it out. Then when I joined a guild no one believed I was a guy, and thought I wouldn't go on voice chat because I was afraid of being a girl gamer instead of the reason I gave them (the fact that I didn't have a microphone).

I'm a guy, if you haven't guessed already. :p

When men say they choose female cause they don't want to stare at a guys ass for a 100 hours, I don't find it a very strong arguement. If playing in third person in Skyrim, You see mostly his upper half as opposed to his lower half.

I wonder if these people just aren't comfortable enough with their own sexuality to use male characters. Are you worried its going to turn you gay?

99.9% of the time when you don't get to choose the gender of the main character, they are male.

So I generally choose female when given the choice, as seeing a female character go on adventures is actually something new and fresh. Variety is nice, but not everyone feels that way...

I'll play male first, because it helps with immersion when I make it as easy as possible to see the game as if I were the character and that was my reality.
