I have to say tattoos all the way for me are better then scarss. As they cover up the mistakes of my past with something that i am proud to see every day as each tattoo i have is a reminder of someone close to me (both living and departed) and the happy time we have had.

As for Wadders comment on self-harm scars... It's not your place to judge another person for your perception of what those scars mean or what happened to bring them to that point. Yes, it was "trendy" to have those for a few years, but not everyone with cutting or burning etc. scars did it or does it for attention or to be cool.

I am well aware of that my good man.

However my comment was dirfected at those who did have self harmed for petty/ nonexistant reasonson other than attention seeking etc.

I know it's not my place to judge, and I'm sorry, but that kinda thing just gets my goat.

I can understand that. I don't believe it's right to cut for attention, though it may work.
Also, as the screen name should imply, I am quite female.

Well, if the question was "Which makes the owner look less intelligent?", I'd go for tattoos straight off. Scars can be the result of unavoidable accidents. Tattoos are permanent reminders of your idiocy, and cannot be acquired by accident. Mind you, they're both equally unsightly.

Anyway, when I was younger, I made my own tattoos, that are technically scars.

I'm gonna have to go with scars for this one.

For one, scars show experience, and experience is good for character. Tattoos are just something you get if you want to. Now that doesn't mean tatoos aren't awesome, it just means that if you've got a good two or three distinctive scars across your body, and maybe a sweet tatoo on the side of your shoulder you're a pretty kickass dude.

Alone they're both nice, but together it increases the awesome factor exponentially. However, if you've got scar tissue on more than 10-15% of your body, it's kind of odd...and if you have more than 3-4 tattoos it's got the same effect.

I like scars better. Although it depends on how the scars got there. Don't like self mutilating scars.

a really good tattoo has to have a backstory, like you were staying with a native african tribe and the tattoo was part of your initiation or something like that.

I'd say scars as long as they have a good story behind them. otherwise the award goes to tattoos due to the fact that people sit still for several hours and allow the needles to perforate them.

Neither are cool. Tattoos look trashy, and scars require physical harm to your body in the first place (excluding surgery).

well...scars, but it all depends on how you got the scar, if you got the scar from moving a sofa for your grandma then its not that cool, but if you got a scar from s fight with 5 thugs, and you made it out of there alive, then you can say "you should see the other guy" which makes it much cooler =P
