In my opinion, "that" mission isn't very violent. No more violent than the rest of the game really. Just controversial.
Exactly... I'm not talking about how it looks with the graphics 'n' stuff. But the idea that you murder civilians because you're undercover and have to? That's fucking insane.
You DON'T have to do anything...
And you can even skip it all together.
So what's the problem?

Anyway, Postal series ftw ;)

Unfortunately I am desensitized to video game violence to the extent where I find gore to be quite excellent. I think MadWorld is pretty bad for it.

I haven't quit a game because it was too violent, but I've quit games such as Mortal Kombat (flame shield) that were, in my humblest of opinions, very simplistic and stupid and attempting to counter these glaring weaknesses by selling buckets of blood to teenagers. Of course, Killer Instinct was more violent than MK but that game also had a lot of depth and personality, as all the characters weren't the exact same except for a couple of specials and finishers.

Boot up Fallout 3.

Go to the Washington monument and head towards the Museum Authority building, where the Aqua Cura quest takes place.

Outside are some mangled bodies with various organs exposed and agonised, dying expressions.

Disturbing stuff. I sometimes forget what a dark, twisted place F3 is.

Also... Manhunt... sickle through the nuts. Ouch.

uncensored manhunt 2 gets pretty close to over the top for me... pliers especially.
I haven't even played that one yet but for some reason the mere mention of 'pliers' made me cringe.

If one more person mentions "No Russian" in MW2, I'm going to slap him/her through the Internet. It was nothing we haven't seen before. I killed an innocent pile of pixels, oh my. I wonder if it had kids.

That mission was powerful and amazing. Don't bash it only because you're too sensitive to see some pixels die.

Manhunt - now that is violent. Throw in Postal 2 and you have an interactive tutorial on how to become a maniac.

I think it depends what game is more violent, because if your talking about gameplay being violent then of course GTA and MD2 but there are games with violent cut scens like Twisted Metal Black and then just randomly violent games like dead rising that the whole game is just gore and violence nothing else

MW2: "that" mission, and one minor scene in another mission, one of the nuked DC ones, where a medic is dragging away a body, and is shot by a Geneva-defying Ruskie. It only lasted about 2 secs, but I had a checkpoint right before it, and I was playing on Veteran, so I died enough times to give me a lot of time to think about the horror of it. And then I started thinking about the inherent evil of what I was doing anyway, murdering people with children and families...yeah, Veteran is a dangerous thing.

I think Heavy Rain may be a contender. It's supposed to be the most realistic and adult game ever released and i've heard that the serial killer only targets children

You, my friend, make a very good point. The mission in question wasn't outlandishly violent, it just had a very 'harrowing' context (you're still shooting the same six copy-pasted guys over and over, the only difference is that these guys have traded the combat gear for casual dress and don't shoot back).

Wanna make that mission violent and actually partway disturbing and harrowing? Cut down on the number of civvies that are killed (the fact that crowds of them were slaughtered in seconds did make it somewhat inpersonal and mundane) and make each death a personal and bloody act rather than a quick and clean procedure.

If they sat you down in a room with six guys and had you chat to them for a while (and maybe even get friendly with them) before you tie them up and execute them one by one, fully being able to see the fear and despair in their eyes as you slowly wave your weapon before them, then I would understand why people are mortified.

Sorry for mentioning it again, but No Russian was the only time I've ever been a bit concerned about violence. Then I remembered it's a video game, same as all the other games where I kill civilians.

I've heard that the Manhut series is pretty damn violent, but I have never played them, so I can't really provide any insight on that matter.

I do not consider the GTA series to be that violent, to be honest. Sure, you can kill with all sorts of weapons, and blow stuff up, but it's not very graphical.
Sure, they die and bleed, but there is no real detail.

In all honesty, I don't think I can provide much useful insight onto the subject, because I prefer other kinds of games.
I do not mind violence and gore, but I prefer other genres than where excess violence and gore are the most common.

Ehm... You murder civilians? Or at least helplessly watch whilst your 'teammates' do. I got the impression that you had to kill the civilians, so if you don't have to, it's probably just a lack of intelligent AI. Which again makes it insane that you're supposed to kill civilians.
It doesn't matter if you can skip the mission or not. It doesn't make the mission any less insane.
