Escort. God help me, escort.

Forced stealth can be bad, but escort can be painfully, hair-rippingly annoying. And I like my hair, thanks very much.

Timesplitters 2, Neotokyo is an example. That level is torture.
Agreed with this. It took me so many tries to get that level. Either the guy you were supposed to follow me seen me out of the corner or their eye or the alarm went of because id done something silly.

OT: I think stealth is usually ok but escort missions are annoying when the person youre supposed to be escorting runs off to fight the enemy horde themselves

Doesn't matter what game your playing or what genera it's in. Escort missions are always the worst.

i agree that the A.I. of the person you are escorting is mostly fucked up. and that it will lead to frustations. however if it fails you can atleast blame the A.I.in forced stealth you can't blame anyone but your self for the retared amount of skill that is needed for some missions.

Good note to developers, if you must have an escort section, do NOT make us escort a previously likable character. Did anyone come out of Episode 1 & 2 not hating Alyx Vance.

Conversely, give the escort character unlimited health and/or useful abilities and use alternative characterization to explain what they are doing there. The vortigaunt section of Episode 2 always gave me the feeling that the vort could be doing this all himself, he just wanted see if cultural hero, Gordon Freeman, was up to snuff. And while the vort could have been disappointed with the somewhat bumbling nature of Freeman, he instead adopts a wry sense of humor about the whole situation.

Escort Missions. Always Escort Missions.

There aren't enough words in the English language to express my hatred for them.
This for me as well, I have enough problems just taking care of myself in a level and now they want me to watch someone who can't even fight back? Massive rage and and cursing soon take over.

Depends on the frailty of the escort, and the design of the stealth. Some Escort Missions are more like you are being escorted by someone badass.. Those are pretty sweet. Even if the goal is "Don't let this person die", if they're badass in their own right, or interesting to listen to/watch, then yeah, I'll enjoy the mission. Likewise, stealth can be either good or bad too. Some games do it really well (I'm going to say Windwaker, but I KNOW that it's the posterboy for useless forced stealth sequences, but I liked it), others it just feels stupid and worse off, it's difficult.

I'd say Escort though. There's only been one game I can think of (Ico) that stretched an Escort Mission into an entire game, but many games have been successful at stealth.

I just really hate having to protect someone else in a video game when my own actions are sometimes difficult enough.

That's what it really comes down to - how difficult is the mission.. if it's really really hard, and it's a gimmicky mission, like a stealth or escort, you'll blame the gimmick. If it's easy, or fun in general (Liberty Prime), then yeah, It's not bad.

In general though, Escorts tend to be worse due to the frail nature of the person you escort.

I despise escort missions. Forced stealth I can deal with because I am only relying on myself where as in escort missions you have to take care of (and pamper) a usually stupid AI. Honestly, escort missions to me feels like asking me to protect the president using only a butter knife.

always escort missions. I've lost count of the amount of times I've shot Ashley in the face in RE4 because she pissed me off for being worse than useless and unbearably whiney.

Escort, for Stealth you have mainly yourself to blame for failing it. Escort's just a gamble in most games, you win or you fail, but not based on your actions.

Escort missions by a mile!! Especially when the escortee's AI insists on trying to make friends with every bad guy for the duration of the mission!

If the stealth part is not broken, like say in that one mission in Crisis Core (which can count for any game mechanic), then of course escort missions...
They just blow.
