Yeah, the 360 crowd for TF2 isn't quite where the PC crowd is, in terms of "niceness" - mainly because the same few of us play TF2 on the 360 very often, and if you aren't part of that group, you're in danger of getting yelled at.

Even on the 360 though, TF2 generally has a better community than something like Halo 3.
Indeed. The Ps3 crowd and the PC crowd are much more cooperative and friendly than the 360 crowd for this game.
PS3 crowd are friendly? Yes, I'm a 360 player and I'll admit live is full of stubborn idiots, but I have a friend who is ps3 player and as soon as I say that one little thing 360 does better than the ps3 he starts disagreeing with my opinion and saying that I'm an idoit and how the 360 sucks. Even when I agree that the ps3 is better in some fields than the 360 he's still being stubborn dick. So a majority of ps3 player are stubborn and don't respect opinions of other people.
You're kinda misunderstanding me. Within the online multiplayer environment, Ps3 users tend to be on average more cooperative, more courteous and more polite. Within the online multiplayer environment being the key term here.
Out of interest; have you had much experience with xbox live?
A little. Some Halo 2, some Halo 3, some Live and Reloaded, some The Darkness.
Then you really shouldn't be too judgemental on the xbox live community. I've met plenty of co-operative and decent players, with good manners and respect for their fellow compadres. Of course there's plenty of cocks to even out the balance, but we're not all bad. ;]
That is true. I'm not saying you are all uncooperative idiots. I'm just saying that, based on the experiences I've heard of both, the average player is more cooperative. Keyword this time is average. I'm not saying there are no rude, arrogant or idiotic players on the PsN, I'm just saying they make up a lesser part than they do in Live, according to what people tell me.
Of course they make up a lesser part in PSN, there are less people on there then on Live. The more people the more douche bags and little kids.

I'm obsessed with Warhawk. I can't put it down. It's so intricately balanced, it's AMAZING.
Better than nearly anything I've ever played. It comes VERY nigh on Team Fortress 2.

The original Team Fortress that was on the Quake engine was the most fun I'd ever had.

Tf2. Tf2. Tf2. Tf2. Tf2. Tf2. Tf2. Oh and Tf2.

Yeah, I really think team fortress 2 craps all over other online shooters.

TF2 is ok. It's okay some of the time but I got into the game late and still don't understand everything.

So I can't put sappers on a sentry when I'm invisible, well fair enough then but why is that when watching my sentry a sapper comes up with no one around.

I can be snipped while sitting behind the metal fence that guards my spawn while I wait for the round to start while I can't snipe them, fine whatever. But when I swap places I get snipped, right because that's fair.

The instruction booklet says Pyro's are immune to fire, makes sense I suppose. Oh look I was just burnt to death, so much for that then.

Why is it that when someone jumps in water the flames are put out but when I jump in the water I burn to death.

I think most of these are because of lag (I can never find an Aus sever) of some kind but the point I was trying to make is that the game has far too many unwritten rules that you can only learn by losing, and that is not fun.

There is so much you need to know before you can go and play. I could write pages of this stuff and I've only played for around 18 hours. Maybe if I played for more than I wont encounter these problems but why would I want to play if I keep getting these problems. Than there is also the problem of no talking (shut up about people being ass holes on XBL, no one talks in TF2) and everyone choosing the same classes and doing the same thing. Great an army of medics, you lot are bound to win.

That's why, to me, TF2 is not the best online shooter. Maybe if I joined up in a clan and bought a strategy guide I will have more fun but I am not willing to do this.

No, the best online shooter (at the moment is) dun dun da dun..... Halo 2.

Yes, halo 2. Why?

Well Halo 2 created a basic matchmaking service that is not compulsory, meaning that you can go for fair matches or jump into custom games at any time. The power of choice is yours. The guns are much better in halo 2 than in halo 3, mostly because of no lame ass AR and Spartan laser (good I hate those things. The maps much more large/small team based maps which makes the team games (what Halo is all about) better. The weapons take more skill than holding down the right trigger, by having more grenades the better player isn't always the one that starts shooting first. By having Dual Wielding a popular option (unlike in Halo 3, dual wield-ables are rare to find) you create interesting combinations for people to use, allowing the player to pick up guns that suit their personal play style (I use the SMG and Plasma Rifle) than just run around killing with the gun they start off with. The community is also better, now there is a small but dedicated following (no more assholes) meaning that any game you join will be friendly yet hard and because of these two things, fun.

There are many more reasons but I don't see the point in posting them as you are most likely already getting started to call me a n00b or what have you.

And that is why Halo 2 is better than Halo 3.

PS:I would have just screamed CoD4 like the rest of you but since IW screwed around with the hosting I can't find Australian games. And I don't play PC shooters, can't stand a mouse, sorry.

And someone really needs to explain the massive appeal of Cod4 to me. I've assumed it's sort of like "The plebeian prefers Halo, I must distance myself from such filth. Ah, what's this then? Call of Duty 4?" And similar statments relating to elitism and Yahtzee worship.
Yahtzee worship???? I knew Halo 3 was gonna be mediocre before it came out.

It's an OKAY game, fun to play with friends, but no real reason for replay value.
Sure you have a rank that goes up or down depending on how well you play, but if its nothing than a little symbol then you're not really pushing yourself to unlock anything other than a small piece of bling next to your name.

At least in CoD4 you have the weapon unlocks to work towards, along with the whole prestige mode thing.
Huh, that's not helpful at all. In my view weapon unlocks are a huge problem with CoD4. Sure it's worked by practically forcing people to play CoD4 and only CoD4 almost constantly to stay competetive but as I said, the only way to make a game fair is to make everyone identicle. By that logic Halo 3 is the best competitive shooter in the market.

I also find the Halo series to be a refreshing delight. I know you're already thinking "OMGZ HALOZ ALL TEH SAME" and I agree with the principle of what you're sort of saying. Every Halo has been similar. Now consider this; what is the most common type of shooter? I'm not talking about FPS or TPS. No, not Halo or Halo clone. Realistic. That's right, realistic CoD4 is essentially the same as every other Call of Duty game and every other game of hundreds of shooter franchises. Yes, better than them but still alot like them.

Halo on the other hand is really unlike most shooters; with it's agile characters, high health stats, and emphasis on vehicular combat. At the end of the day, me and alot of other people would rather play a game in which you can run over a guy with a purple alien hoverfighter then be destroyed by a red beam of death than a game in which you can earn golden weapons and be killed by random bullets shot through a wall.

They just mostly aren't the people who play shooters daily or post on The Escapist.

Also, isn't "pestige mode" essentially similar to Halo 3's ranks except that it takes away all that stuff you spent roughly a continuous week earning?

Did you even read my post. I'm mean sure, everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and what have you but why do you disagree with me. What makes other online shooters so much better than Halo 2? Anyone?

Yes I did, and a lot of what you listed only deals within the halo series itself or other games do better.

Plus the community is the one of the worse I have seen.

The lack of TF2 is why "other" is being rated so highly.

I will say it is one of the most originally and skillfully designed shooters (on all levels, I respond most to the visuals) with a novel core mechanic. The Valve crew dopes it periodically when they do things like give the Pyro 100% critical from the rear type weapons (seriously Valve, you have a very fine balance in that game, things like that spin it all out of whack)

UT 99/2k4 I wouldn't include because it is past its time (not saying it is a bad shooter, saying UT3 has been out long enough) UT3 should be included on that list (how can you include GOW and not UT3?)

CS is another one that I might put on the too old for this list, but given some of the other inclusions...

TF2 is without a doubt the best game I have ever played online. Of the ones listed, COD4 probably, but it's merely good, as opposed to being genera-defining. I don't like Counter-Strike much, but I'm just as surprised as it's absence. Between the original and the Source engine remake, it's the most popular online action game in the world.

Where is Counter Strike.

No game can compare to it's Awesomness.

Not even Halo or COD4.

Let's see how long halo can stick around.

(Can I get some props for counting 8000 CS1.6 servers on steam alone.)

As long as the infrastructure to play it exists any online shooter that was ever popular at all will continue to be played. People just never let go.

Counter-Strike's huge popularity came about because it was a good multiplayer shooter at a time when those really didn't exist.

(No)

However, CS probably should be on that list.

Biased towards Warhawk is me - When it comes to these console shooters I like warhawk the most - if it had a "class" system and none of this spawning crap then maybe I'd love it even more.

Why the hell would you form an opinion of an ENTIRE COMMUNITY based off of your ONE stupid friend? Why did you bring up your stupid friend when they were talking about TF2?
