I have was an Arbitrator under the employ of an Inquisitor in a Dark Heresy campaign. It didn't run for long but it was fun. We are about to try again with Rogue Trader though.

No servant of the Emperor dies unavenged. No enemy of the Emperor escapes unpunished!

So I picked inquisition. I may not be the biggest cog in the works but without me whole worlds might succumb to the taint of evil xenos or chaotic entities. God Emperor save us.

I would like to be Commissar Ciaphas Cain Hero of the Imperum. He is such a magnifican bastard.
I saw a book about him in a store yesterday. would you recommend it?
Absolutely yes. They're hilarious.
But would they make a good introduction to the Warhammer 40k universe? I've only played The Dawn of War games.

The Horus Heresy is also a great book series. Though I only read two, I'm looking foward to getting the others.

personally, in terms of 'which i would personally most like to join?', it'd be the space wolves (special space marine chapter). they have the second-strongest fortress in the imperium, next to the emperor's palace itself, they are always up for a laugh, they have more honour than most other chapters (always honour their allies, they almost started another war for armaggedon when they heard that the civ-soldiers had all been enslaved to prevent the spreading of rumours about the dark powers) and love drinking, eating meat and starting friendly fights in their spare time. what's not to like?
oh yeah, and they're the only space marines who are still classed as a legion, rather than a chapter because they refuse to even glance at the codex astartes. so that means that they still have 12 companies, each numbering roughly 200 men, and some of them ride to battle on giant wolves about 8 feet tall! awesome!

They're not the best books in that regard, because although I don't remember them actually contradicting any fluff, it's not the best representation of the universe. Storm of Iron is a good place to start for that.

There's also everything by Dan Abnett, which portrays the world in quite a different way. There aren't too many breaks from established fluff, but the overall feel is less over the top and a little bit more realistic. They're still dark and gritty though, probably more so because they tone down the whole thing.

Imperial Guard. They are the only ones on that list with a shred of Humanity left in them.

They don't know where they are going, only that it is far from home. They are armed with flashlights and cardboard armor, but they keep going forward. To the front are seething masses of every possible race in the galaxy that want nothing more than to tear them apart. To the rear are zealous officers who execute men to boost morale. But they keep going forward, unflinching towards a literal meat grinder, knowing full well that their lives are merely part of a great wall, holding back the tide until the sea of nightmares finally breaks.
Each man, woman and child will give their lives so that others may live.

They are the Imperial Guard, and they will hold the fucking line.

And Ollanius Pius is canon, whatever the fuck Games Workshop says.

I wouldn't want to be a part of the imperium AT ALL.
I think all of those groups act like psycotic killers rather than soldiers.

The marines regard the common people as 'faceless masses' and don't give a sh*poo how many inocents die.
The guard is nothing but a sorry ass, underequipped, overmanned organization that provides cannon fodder and executes its own for no real reason at all.
The sisters think everything is fair game and they can do whatever they want as long as they do it 'in the name of the emperor'. Basically they're like Nazis.
The inquisition 'need I say more' just kill for giggles.
And the navy, well I think I can go with saying: glorified ferrymen.

All of the factions are severely xenofobic and can't get along.

In fact, every faction in the warhammer 40k universe acts like a bunch of trigger happy lunatics.

Chaos are weird maniacal killers.
Dark Eldar torture for fun.
Orks are mindless, gun wielding bafoons.
Eldar are a bunch off haughty pr*shovinists and only care about their own.
Necrons are, well... dead. They're zombies and want to kill everything.
Tyranids are hive minded killing machines, only interested in destroying worlds.

The only ones that I can actually get behind are the Tau. They have a strange and extremely conformistic way of living but at least their goals are noble. They want to unite. They're the only race that can actually get along with others rather than blindly murdering them all.
They have a bizare devotion to their 'grater good' but at least it involves others.

If by unite you mean, mass sterilization of human colonies to prevent reproduction within the Tau, and a higher caste who mind control their underlings for less than noble reasons?
I choose free will.

The Tau might be sympathetic compared to the other races, but their Ethereals are like the Borg.

I didn't say they're good. I say they're the LEAST EVIL. Yes they have conformity issues. yes they have mind control issues. But at least they don't annhialate everyone they meet.
None of the factions have free will so I'dd go for the one that doesn't want to kill me.

Yes, it's the witch hunters mod for DC.

I'd have to go Inquisition, it's the only one where you can think for yourself. Rogue Trader would also be a good option.

It's not that one. The models pictured with the sentinel are from witch hunters. Civilians and Arbites may have borrowed the models though.

It's this one:

The battlesister models look a bit waifu but in general they are much better looking models than Soulstorm, even if the mod is only about 90% finished.

I can also recommend Dawn of Steel and Inquisition Daemonhunters as well as the New Races Mixer.

I'd go Mechanicus first, and more specifically, the Adeptus Titanicus. I'd control an Emporer class Imperator Titan.

Second is definetly the Adeptus Asrates. 7 feet tall, clad in orante armour, striding the fields of battle, smiting all those that oppose the Light of the Emporer, taht sounds pretty good to me. Chapers would be:Space Wolfs(Because they drink, lots) Salamanders (They're Pyromaniacs. Does anything else need be said?), and the Raven Gaurd (Stealth and CQC specialists with Lighting claws!)

KILL THE HERETIC! BURN THE WITCH! PURGE THE MUTANT! SUFFER NOT THE UNCLEAN TO LIVE!

Yeah I'd want to go with the Inquisition, Ordo Hereticus. You get to be part of the Inquisition, but you don't have to constantly deal with soul-corrupting daemons. Although I wouldn't mind being part of the Ordo Xenos either. Fighting aliens would be fun too.

Failing that I'd want to be part of the Adeptus Mechanicus of Mars.
