I always thought the shot heard around the world was when Archduke Ferdinand was shot in Sarajevo. That shot kicked open a bigger box of fun really.
Came here to post this.

[sub]But I guess it's pretty easy to prove who did that.[/sub]
This was in fact the first "Shot heard round the world" Said phrase is now a byword for portentous events historically, and for some reason in sports.[/quote

I just said that Shot Heard 'Round The World was coined by Ralph Waldo Emerson (Star-Spangled Banner anyone?) as an opening line in his poem Concord Hymn. THAT was the first SHRTW (yes i made it an acronym, sue me) because it inspired EVERYONE in the world to revolt against their oppressors, the Revolutionary War led to the French Revolution, the Greek Revolution, and the foundation of liberals and conservatives. It was remarkable that itty-bitty America, beat big bad England. So it would give alot of people the ballz to stand up to their tyrants. Point:Archduke dying, NOT THE FIRST SHOT; American Revolution: REAL FIRST SHOT. Wikipedia guys, thats how i found this out.
I can see how i was not clear enough in my post. You are correct and that is what i had been referring to. Initially i thought about Ferdinand, then looked it up and then POSTED THE INFO IN MY FIRST POST. Directly from the Cambridge Study on Wiki. Also I agree with you about the alarming amount of Opinions that did not even type it into their damn Google bar. This is not a matter of opinion like the Second Gunman On the Gnoll.

It is fact. Ebenezer Munroe, a Minuteman who fired the first shot on the British on Lexington green, April 19, 1775.

That's debatable. Conservatism was already a well-established political tradition (In the form of the Tory party and, to a lesser extent, the Whigs), and Liberalism caused the US revolution, not the other way around.

If you've been on wikipedia, you'd have read this. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_shot_heard_around_the_world]

POINT: Don't try to belittle the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. The change that wrought was arguably on a far greater scale than the US revolution, in a very short space of time, and was far more bloody. At the very least, you can surely empathize with people who place it higher.

I'm going to say Batman. Since he wasn't really "Dead" and traveled through time. Think about it. He was a caveman, a pirate, why not the one who fired the shot heard around the world? Oh wait he doesn't use guns...I think I hear the world imploding now.

My apologies I thought you were referring the Archduke's assassination as the first shot and agreeing with mireko that WW1 was the first shot. I read it as,"THAT was the first shot," not,"THIS is the first shot."

Seeing as the phrase "shot heard round the world" shows up in a poem written in 1836 about the American Revolution, and World War I, the Great War, hadn't even happened yet, I'm afraid I must disagree. It refers to the unknown shot in Lexington, then was later used for the beginning of World War I.

Maybe that's why he was there, to start the war and make America. He didn't necessarily need to kill someone, so much as he needed to fire a gun. BRILLIANT!

I've heard the theory that the first shot was a pistol shot. Pistols were primarily carried by British officers. Therefore, the British.

Also, OP: you may be surprised to find out that very few people outside the states actually care about the US revolutionary war. So it's hardly considered a big deal.

He started the war cause the French pricks and bastards wrote a false document and told him to sign. he couldnt read french, couldnt read what he agreed to. Perhaps if the French were honest and not lying dicks, such things would never have happened.

I'm not trying to belittle the Archduke's death (what is an Archduke in charge of? are they more powerful than regular dukes?), I just wanted to set the record straight that the Revolutionary War was the first shot and the second was most definitely Archduke's death that led to WW1. Just wanna clear the fog

So when the Option is SIGN OR DIE you wouldnt sign? As a general, knowing all the men you had left would be massacred, without the foreknowledge that this would be blown up (because really, if people hadnt raised a stink and they were cool with it, the war wouldnt have started), you wouldnt sign to save their lives? Well, how presumptuous and pretentious of you.

Washington did what any general should. he put his men before his pride and moved to save their lives. Besides, it would have came to war regardless, cause Britain and France cant get along (even today in Canada, French Canadians cant get along with Brit Canadians), and each wanted the country for themselves for trade that was HIGHLY marketable.
