Sure. I go to Penny Arcade every Wednesday to check out the new video.

I am pretty sure the only reason it isn't discuss here anymore is because they are not here anymore.

Nope, they get like over 100k for Allison surgery and right after that they complain about not getting money and say "Well we're keeping all this money, but we're gonna bail now so fuck you". Could be interesting to watch no doubt, be I'm not doing that on principle.
I think you meant "well we're starting up an indie game fund with every bit of money left over from Allison's surgery, and btw, you're all getting awesome t-shirts for being so awesome".

Regardless of that, if the Escapist isn't going to pay them their share of the revenue they help generate for the site, then they need to either stop doing the show or move to a different publisher. It's beyond common in the publishing industry for creators to not get paid on time or even the full amount for their work, and sadly that goes for web publishing too.
My problem with it (can't speak for everyone) was more the way James went about the whole split, which was clearly just as much to start his own thing as it was due to the fact that he had a (legitimate) problem with the Escapist for not paying its bills on time. He escalated it to a degree that it didn't need to go to at all, and did it in a rather manipulative manner by saying things that were both meant to draw the viewers to his side, and were sometimes divorced from the facts. It's one thing to casually inform viewers that due to problems with getting paid and because he wanted to start his own thing, he's going to take his show off the Escapist, and quite another to have turned it into the sh*tstorm that it became.

Also the fact that he decided to use the extra money to do a company thing rather than, say, giving it to a game-related charity (many of which exist) or directly handing it out scholarships/grants to indie game studios (rather than adding the whole publisher caveat), or just paying for the costs to run the show, speaks volumes about James' intentions and where his mindset was. It's fine that he wanted to do that from the start, but the fact that he never bothered to admit that irked me quite a bit.

I think the fact that some people can become addicted to games to a debilitating degree is something that people should be aware of.
But that's not really news. People can become addicted to anything to a debilitating degree.

Some of their early episodes were ok, but then it turned into pretentious, preachy, "games are art. What is money? What are shareholders?" bullshit.

Then they raised $100,000 from contributions under the pretense of paying for a medical procedure, pay for it and give Allison Theus a small amount to pay bills, and use the rest to start a company. I have a feeling a lot fewer people would have donated if they had said "We are going to use any surplus (what is surplus will be defined by us) for our own gain".

I had no interest after that.

Except it's not for their own gain. It's a non-profit venture to help budding indie developers get the chance to create games. Half the profits from any games that they produce are split to the developers, and the other half goes straight back into the fund.

I don't see how they're personally gaining anything from this.

The Game Addiction episode was the exception to the norm. I started watching it, got bored, and stopped. It was right back to form the next week. The only problem I have with it now is it uses Blip tv and I HATE Blip in general. Otherwise, I still watch it. They seem to be the only people on the internet who want to have a serious discussion about games.

Only watched it here and usually read the description before watching it.
Usually informative but the guy's voice was really annoying at times so I haven't really followed up on it since it left.

Personally, I watched the show religiously every week when they were here and I did follow them to Youtube, but I got massively turned off of the show when James hijacked two whole episodes to talk about how he used to play games so much that he didn't function as a human being.
Oh no, how dare they depart from their normal format for two whole episodes to talk about a rather serious issue. The horror. The terror.

They should always remain topical, but only in ways I approve of!
Why don't you take Yahtzee, make him do away with his artwork, force him to talk slowly, sigh occasionally, and tell everyone how gaming touched him in a bad place for 10 minutes... and then do it again a week later so he can finish his story. I'd bet you money that people would stop watching ZP in droves. It's not just a deviation of style.
HEAR! HEAR!

I still watch the show every week thanks to the youtube reminders they put up providing a link to Penny Arcade but my god those two episodes were preachy as fuck. I got two minutes or so into the first part, saw the youtube comments from people saying crap like "Oh my god James, this touched me so much I cried after watching it" and quite swiftly said "Yeah...I'm out".

The humor was gone, the intelligence was gone, the whole show had become a forum for James to lecture us about how terrible games had been for him... I have not watched a single episode since.
Others may have already said this, but you should go back and give them another chance. After that very serious two-parter (which I didn't particularly care for either) the show went back to being fun and educational.

The last several episodes, focused on Science Fiction related topics, have been particularly good. You should seriously go back and give them another shot.

A private entity that invests a portion of it's own funds into a game project it feels has the potential of being commercially successful if funded. Once the property is out of development and up for sale, said entity then receives a portion of the profits from the sales in order to continue to do what it does by putting it's backing behind (and name on) additional IPs.

What I just described is James' description of the company they started. It is allso a nutshell description of Activision, EA, etc. It is the description of a publishing company. The only thing "indie" is the small time developers they will be funding.

I still watch it, I think it's a great series.

It's not perfect but it takes a serious look on the development of gaming in larger picture and adresses a lot of subjects I find interesting and wich I believe are crucial to discuss to further a medium that's still in it's infancy.

The gaming addiction episodes were heavy but It took a lot of courage for James to do that.

Made me think....like most of their episodes do.....wich I enjoy.
