Closest thing I have to a pet right now is a houseplant. And as attached as I am to Frank, I can always buy another houseplant.

So I guess you get to live. As long as I get another houseplant.

Even as a pet owner myself (I have a cat), I feel that people who put the lives of animals they own over other human beings are SELFISH. Selfish because their pets love them unconditionally and provide companionship, while many people don't get along well with other humans. However, I personally could never live with the guilt knowing that I let another human being with family, friends, a significant other, a job where they provide value to others, hopes, and dreams die for an animal that is barely self-aware and mainly exists to make me happy and entertain me.
I see. So you feel your life is of obvious more importance than any other.

And you call others selfish. *tsk* *tsk*

Don't know you, my kitten is cute, and you are on probation for something, so yeah you're screwed. Hell I would probably do it for the lawls. But I'm a largely apathetic jerk. If you were someone closer to me then you have a fair chance.

Depends on the situation. If you're both hanging off a cliff, and I stand there and have to choose, I'll have to save OP.
However, if it just works by some kind of magic, and I hear "either OP will die or your cat will. Your choice" I'll pick OP.

I guess it comes down to whether you're asking me whom I'd rather save or whom I'd rather kill.

Looking at your avatar, I'm not surprised.

OP: Sorry buddy. Nothing personal, but I tend to like animals more than people, and I love my dog more than anything in the world.

People ask me who my best friend in the world is, and my answer is "My dog".

Why? He's never lied to me, he loves me unconditionally, and he's never stolen the girl I liked.

EDIT:

Exactly my point. Most humans are, or at least have the potential to be, complete assholes. An animal doesn't have it in themselves to be evil.

This is why I can watch those Christian Children's Fund commercials without batting an eye, but as soon as one of those OSPCA commercials come on, I have to change the channel. And hug my dog. And give another donation to the OSPCA.

I can't believe the number of people who would let a human stranger die rather than their pet. God help me if I should ever be hanging off the side of a building next to somebody's cat. "No... no! NO!! MR FLUFFEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELS!!!!" *I fall to my doom as Mr. Fluffles watches, unable to comprehend what happened or what is going on, yet still somehow smiling sinisterly*

People are impractical these days I guess. I've had enough pets to know they have a limited warranty, and have raised things to eat them. If my cats were in a fire or my dog were fighting a bear I wouldn't abandon them, I do love them. But I wouldn't save them over another human. You're talking about the difference between something that pees on the rug vs someone I can carry on a conversation with.

The ability to play with string is the determining factor, so you die my cats live. Sucks to be you but they are just so cute!

because we should care more about the survival of our own species over that of another I would tell a cat to save a cat over a human as it is part of it's own species.

A cat wouldnt bother to save anyone other then itself, cats are cool that way.

Both are living creatures. One I hold dear to me. The other is a stranger I don't know.

I've been ridiculed and bullied by human beings. I've even had human beings tell me that I deserve eternal punishment. Human beings deny me my dreams. My pet has only scratched me a few times. I posses empathy... but when it comes time to choose, i'd choose my pet over a stranger.

Not to say that I wouldn't give my life for a stranger. It is just when having to make this choice, i'd choose my pet

Yes, I do feel my life, and that of almost every other human with very few exceptions, carries more importance than your dog/cat/hamster/iguana.

These poll results are hardly surprising; a similar question was posed by another user on a forum I frequent and most people were more than happy to let that OP die, even kill and torture him, over their dog or cat. There is a serious lack of empathy in the modern world.

Even as a pet owner myself (I have a cat), I feel that people who put the lives of animals they own over other human beings are SELFISH. Selfish because their pets love them unconditionally and provide companionship, and they don't want to give this source of happiness up, while many people don't get along well with other humans. However, I personally could never live with the guilt knowing that I let another human being with family, friends, a significant other, a job where they provide value to others, hopes, and dreams die for an animal that is barely self-aware and mainly exists to make me happy and entertain me.
...Why does every single one of these type of threads open with the OP insulting everyone who disagrees with what he or she thinks is the right answer? Yesterday it was that guy flaming everyone who said a meat license is an awful idea, and now you're saying there's no empathy in the world and that we're all selfish. And it comes before you've even had a chance to fully think about what is being asked. You don't even know what you'd do yet and you're already being insulted for even considering the wrong answer because you are a retarded redneck (the meat thread) or a selfish person with no empathy.
I was prepared to say I'd save the human, but if we're talking about YOU specifically, now I'd have to choose my pet, because in this case the question is no longer "Would you save a stranger or your pet?". You made a first impression by insulting anyone who picked an answer you didn't like, and now you're not a complete stranger that I know nothing about. Instead, I see a very rude and self-centered person who thinks he or she is more important than my pet and just assumes my pet is stupid and doesn't have any feelings. Thus the question being asked here is now "Would you save a rude, self-centered person or your pet?" and hey, the pet now wins. Oh, and don't worry, I don't expect anyone to give up their pet for me either, so you can just save yourself the trouble of trying to guilt trip me, because it won't work.

But hey, the joys of a hypothetical question. Nobody really knows what they'd do in this situation. It's always so much easier to just talk about it, but unless you actually have to do it, there's a certain level of real weight and feeling of consequence to the choice that's quite lacking.

You.

Really I have nothing against you, but I fucking love my cats. They're very important to me. Sorry my man, you're out.
First few posts and I have my answer already here for me. I love my pets, I know them, they are family to me, and they are not stupid, they have strong emotions and understand the world, they are my family. You, are not.

And criticising me for being selfish saving my own family over a person I have no connection to, is not convincing to change choices in the slightest. What makes people's the right to live more important than animals' right to live? They were here before us, they serve us unconditionally and would give their lives for their owners, the least I could do for my pets to return the favour is save them over a person I don't know.

Wait, so you're trying to say that it's selfish to wish an end to a life you've never, and probably never will, know, compared to ending the life of an animal which lives in your house, plays, eats, probably even sleeps with you.
What makes me sad is that there are still people in the world i live in who actually measure the value of a life. A life is a life, whether it's a cat, dog, human, whatever.

As for your question, i'd obviously choose my cat if she were still here, if only to rid the world of another who thinks like you.

People like you play the victim card, but you are actually part of the problem. Because you were wronged by humans at some point in your life, you are bitter and upset and thus are less likely to help others and/or more likely to treat them poorly, thus leading THEM to feel biter and upset... and then the cycle continues.

You're absolutely right Sparky, these results are very sad indeed!(sorry, had to say that; haven't seen anything Farscape related in a long time)
I mean yeah I care for my pet and all, but its life simply can't be measured with person's life. I'd probably feel sad for not being able to save both, but even if one would consider evolutionary, moral legal or spiritual reasons the OP deserves to live. People have rights you know!
Also, what is this crap about not saving someone because you don't know him? You don't have to be emotionally attached to someone in order to do the right thing.

Anyway, OT: I probably would end up not saving anyone because I'm rather incompetent when it comes to quick reactions, and working under pressure.
