I love doing it. I know a lot of other men love doing it. Why do you think guys show off their "battle wounds?"

Edit: Sigh, polls make Nunqual mad. The options were:
To show off their manliness.
To show off their toughness.
To impress the gals.
To prove they're interesting.
I don't do it.

...for the same reason women do?

People dig scars. Makes them seem interesting. Let me tell you the story of how I got *this* one.

Nice poll. Also, it's fun telling people how you got those scars. Ever seen Dark Knight? Joker was having a blast.

Some old genetic thing, from when we still hurdled together in caves, when the man with the scars usually was stronger and better than his other peers.

Because they look cool... Most of my scars I have for horribly lame reasons, e.g. My cat scratched me, I punched the oven, I ripped off a freckle...

Even so, they look fancy, so...

Tell me about the oven. WHY DID YOU PUNCH AN OVEN?!

OT: People show them off? I thought that it was just in movies.

You can rip off freckles? I thought they were skin pigmentation? Dig you have to dig them out or something?

OT: I guess to show off? I have no idea otherwise.

Because I figured that'd be a more fun way to describe it :x

The whole story is that, after taking out the Pizza from the oven, I tried to close that metal part back in, but then my hand slipped and so I basically punched it. Now I forever have a burn scar on my right pointer finger. I think it looks rather cool.

I guess so. It was an odd freckle though; it was tinted blue. I decided I didn't like that, so I ripped it off. After a few days, I found a small rock inside, took it out, and more or less let it be. Now it's just a round scar on my left forearm.

To show that we can take pain, are reckless, and don't have much care for our well-being. More often than not, scars are simply the result of clumsiness but whatever.

I don't show of my scars, and I have never seen anyone else do it.

If someone asks about one, I'll tell them, but I don't show them on purpose or use it to impress women.

Maybe it's because I'm fairly well known for my pain tolerance, so I don't really need to prove my toughness or anything.

They look badass. They show that someone has done something cool and dangerous. You don't get cool scars from baking cupcakes for your princess doll, Sweetheart.
Unless the oven explodes. Leaking gas lines and all that.

Scars make a great conversation starter, and all three options are fun when it comes to them.
You can tell the truth about the scar which can be sad or amazing, but always a fun story when you tell it in a fun way.
You can lie about it to relate to a subject that you will have a good conversation about.
And finally (my personal favorite), you can lie about it in an obviously too-over-the-top-to-be-believable situation that people will instantly realize is fake but see that you're doing it on purpose to have some fun, and play along. My scar, that some may say I got from playing football back in High School, was actually begotten through fighting a polar bear with my bare hands. This scar on my leg? Not from childhood surgery, but fighting a volcano.

Also with my bare hands.

As a girl I can't offer a terribly objective opinion about it, but I would imagine it to be an extension of machismo. Because a scar represents having participated in something "cool" or "dangerous" (which could easily be classified as stupid, in some regards). In other respects it represents toughness, as in "yeah, look at this, I went through this and I'm still here and badass", and that is pretty important for even the most unassuming of guys. And, well, it's instinctual. Attraction is as much instinctual as it is intellectual for we humans, and a potential mate could see a scarred individual as someone with fortitude and power and security, i.e. good genes. It's as much an attraction of mates issue as it is a dominance issue, like "Yeah, I'm a badass, check out what I've been through, what have you got, punk?!".
That's just from my (admittedly limited) understanding of basic psychological precepts as well as what I've observed (and in some cases, felt). Our instincts lead us to make judgements on each other and on our society, and those same instincts cause us to come up with ways to be judged favorably by our peers.
For guys, toughness...i.e. scars...is a way to do exactly that.

Just my opinion though :p

Usually has a good story behind it, whether it is impressive, heroic, funny, or just embarrassing.
