There are usually good stories behind them. I like hearing and telling stories behind scars.

Damn skippy. I have a scar on my wrist that is the Nike symbol. I prefer to associate it with Greek mythology rather than a shoe.

I have scars on my back that look like I've been whipped. I prefer to say that I've been whipped, or that I "Like it rough" rather than say that they're simple stretch marks. Even then, I tend to use the phrase, "I outgrew my back."

It can be a little difficult to hide a scar when it's placed directly in the centre of your forehead.

But never mind that it's a scar I received when somebody pushed me over a step when I was a four-year-old. As far as anyone else is concerned, that was a "fight". Sounds cooler that way.

Every scar has a story, and human beings are storytelling creatures. For instance: I have a scar on my knee, which I got on a regatta with my dad. And that reminds me, on the same regatta, we got hit by a squall and were blown into the broad side of an island. Took a chunk out of the nose the size of a toonie. You wouldn't believe it; my dad was at the tiller, and I was at the bow trying to get the jib down barely twenty feet away, and we were screaming at the top of our lungs. Couldn't hear a word each other said.

See how that worked? Started out showing you a scar, ended telling you an awesome story.

I also have a scar on my very upper thigh from my feeding tube when I was in ICU, but I can't remember any of that story as I was a newborn.

I think those are stretch marks from really quick growth spurts. I really don't see the appeal in showing off scars, at least not to people with whom you aren't already friendly. Like a few people have said, most scars are caused by pretty lame reasons. Almost all of my scars are from before puberty. Would these same men show off their circumcision scars?

I've thought about getting a tattoo in order to cover up a surgical scar.

Oh yeah, I mostly joke around with friends or those who I'm actively being friendly with. The scars on my back only come up when I'm swimming.

Circumcision scars, neh? That actually explains a lot...

Since my being Jewish is a lot of my 'act' when I make fun of myself, that comes up every now and again. I just tend to say something along the lines of "Well hey, I never really had that part so it's not like I miss it." No scar showing there, though...

I think guys like impressing other guys with scars more than women, like a badge of honor. I've got a couple of gnarly ones myself, but I never really show them off, they're just there.

For me, it makes conversation. I REALLY don't care about impressing anyone, it's usually awkward if someone is trying to act like they're better than anyone else just for attention. I have a scar that runs down the back of my hand from the top of my index finger to the knuckle on my third finger, which I got as an infant and not doing something dumb, and if anyone asks how I got the scar it usually sparks a pretty interesting conversation.

Like many of the other posters, I'm female and I would enjoy showing scars as conversation starters, if I had any impressive ones on appropriate body areas (I've had some lung surgery, but I think pulling up my shirt in public would get me the wrong kind of attention). I do have some nice ones on my nose from a friend's dog, but they're just bumps and I don't want people touching my nose.

Most of my scars I have for horribly lame reasons, e.g. My cat scratched me, I punched the oven, I ripped off a freckle...
THAT'S AWESOME.

I have a miniscule face scar from falling out of bed. That's it.

I possess a rather large scar on my right hip. I've only just completed the part of my life where PE is considered a compulsory class (where I go to school, you can choose to simply fulfill the, albeit, meager fitness requirements outside of school, as opposed to taking up time that could be spent on meaningful courses), so for a while I would get questions along the lines of "Were you shanked?" Now, to my credit, never did I say that I actually was stabbed, but it's always more than a little boring whenever I tell people that I just got a mole removed.

Whoever it was that said that scars usually have really boring origins probably knew a great deal on what they were talking about.

I'm a woman and I love showing my scars off. It's a really good conversation starter and general "I'm bad ass now please like me" sort of thing.
Something like this plus if you didn't cry during the whole ordeal people are like this person is a fucking badass I must be friends with them now.

Because they show what kind of experiences they have, be it a good one or a bad one, which may get the interest of people.

It's the most unique type of tattoo.
Seconded. And more badass, even if I got the one on my forehead from a piano it still looks like I got a scar doing something badass. The one on my lip did come from something slightly badass so, there's always that.

Because they are little memories of my past.

Every scar and cut, all i need to do is look at it, To touch and feel it, and i can remember entire months about that scar alone. Most importantly i can remember what happened when i got that scar step by step.

It's not something i brag about, or try to impress people with. It's just a reminder of my life imprinted on my body. A sign that i have lived.

And i enjoy them.
