I've got a big scar across the left side of my abdomen, and when I was at a cottage with a bunch of people a while back, EVERYBODY was asking me about it.
I don't seek out to show it off but it's just there and can't be hidden if I'm out swimming.
I have to conclude by the multitude of questions I received about it that people just find scars interesting.
There's always a chance that there is a crazy story attached to it.

Dale Carnegie once wrote that every man, woman, and child has the desire to feel important. Displaying of scars is one form of one displaying such "importance." It's sort of a "look at me; look how tough I am; notice my nonchalance at physical harm" sort of thing.

5) I don't do it.

I recently got banged up a little when I willingly jumped into an area where waves crash into you like locomotives. It was fun as hell and I got a few nice (read: large, painful) bruises and very minor cuts. But I'm not the guy who shows off to everyone like a horny peacock so I kept my bruises covered until they healed.

I agree with the other guys talking about stories and such. If you can't think up of anything to say, you can always start up a little life story, and what's better than how you got a big scar on your body?

Sigh, polls make Nunqual mad. The options were:
To show off their manliness.
To show off their toughness.
To impress the gals.
To prove they're interesting.
I don't do it.
I choose the I don't do it. I don't point it out unless there is a humorous story behind it. I don't feel the need to impress everyone with injuries.

They're mostly unique, look cool, and have badass or funny stories behind them.

They're either macho or emo. There is something fascinating about scars, though. Not so much the scars, actually, but the stories behind them.

Because they're conversation pieces you carry around with you.

And they're so easy to exaggerate, too. For example, I have a scar on my finger from punching a bandsaw. It was a tough fight.

Mainly because it's something to talk about when me and my friends are bored, I show off most of mine even though I know I won't win.

People like telling interesting stories, there are often interesting stories behind scars. I'm sure that you would find that people who get scars from boring stories probably wouldn't talk about them as freely.

Because they look cool... Most of my scars I have for horribly lame reasons, e.g. My cat scratched me, I punched the oven, I ripped off a freckle...

Even so, they look fancy, so...
What have you got against ovens?

I wanted a pizza, but in the process of taking it out it gave me some rude backtalk, so I punished it. Totally worth the discoloured scar on my point finger.

My friend would always talk about how someone with a scar must be a bad fighter, because how could they be a good fighter if they had a scar? I'd always reply with yeah they got a scar but you should have seen the other guy.

A scar shows that you were in a dangerous situation and survive. This could very well make you badass. Plus sometimes scars just look cool.
