A lot of teachers take the whole, "They didn't take the land back, so we won," approach. Once you enter college if you take a history class that covers the era where there was a United States, they tell you differently.

Personally, I'm going along with the idea that since Andrew Jackson won the battle of New Orleans a lot of my fellow Americans mistake that for overall victory even if the war was already over. As Larry Gonick said, had the telegram been invented, A J would just be another homocidal maniac.

Remembering that the British forces burned down the White House during the same war has done a lot to remind me that we never really won the war of 1812.

So?
It seems to spark discussion. It's informative, I know I learned something.
This thread doesn't affect you at all, just don't go to it. No need to be an asshole, the OP is obviously interested in it, let him learn. Let me learn. There's no harm coming from this thread there's no reason to be derogatory.

I don't think its a war we talk about much over here. who knows though, i just met a guy who says we won in Afghanistan 3 years ago. (WRONG btws) maybe its just this ideal that we can believe whatever we wish with no regard to fact (see also religion and fox news. why yes I'm a far left liberal) I think that the things that we are taught (if you believe you can do it; see also, naruto) anyway I think its people taking this too far, thinking that if they believe its true it is. either way its kinda sad.

Its one of those situations where both sides can claim a victory - America can say they won because they saw us off, we can say we won because we held on to Canada (and got up to a spot of arson). I wouldnt let it bother you too much - they were all a bunch of ignorant peons that died of easily curable diseases and didn't know about evolution, general relativaty, or all those other clever spangly things humans get up to when they're not pasting each other in costly wars- British, American- they're all shadows and dust now.

We declared war on the British for pretty much no good reason. They then came over and kicked our ass by every measure possible to rate ass-kickery (including burning our capitol). Then they left. Sounds pretty much like mission accomplished on their part.
No good reason? They were helping Native Americans attack settlers, and were forcing American sailors into the British Navy. That's kind of a big deal. America declared war, attempted to cut off British staging grounds in Canada because they knew an invasion would imminent, and then fought that invasion. They failed. The British goal at this point was to retake their colonies. And, Napoleon was getting to be kind of a big deal at the time, so the British ultimately failed. So no, it was definitely not mission accomplished on the British side. Not to mention the rise of patriotism, the acceptance of the U.S. as a nation by many European countries, and the Monroe Doctrine that came about from the war.

I never really knew much about this war... I mean I guess I always thought that we won, because I never rally heard otherwise.

Well really it was just America winning its freedom so they count it as a victory, even if it is a tie.

I'm so tired of "Why do Americans (fill in the blank with something that most Americans don't do)?"

I shall call this "The straw man Thread."

Glad you asked! Here's how one sets up a straw man thread:

Step 1: State an untrue fact that denigrates a group that many people hate (in this case, that "Many Americans think they won the war of 1812").

Step 2: Ask why this fact is true ("Why do those stupid rednecks cling to this demonstrably untrue idea?"). It doesn't matter that it's not true. Ask why it is, and everyone will assume you are being truthful.

Step 3: Step back and watch everyone talk about what a bunch of jerks the group you dislike is ("Gosh, I sure do hate people who don't know their history!").

I was born and educated in the U.S. I live and work here. The only people who would assert the viewpoint you asked about are the uneducated and those who avoid history classes like the plague. The only difference between international stupid people and American stupid people is that international stupid people have the humility to admit ignorance.

There is no societal trend here. You've just been talking to an infantile idiot who doesn't remember what he was taught in school (or hasn't gotten that far yet). Recognize that fact and move on rather than trying to figure out what he could possibly have been taught in order to say "Nuh uhh. My Dad can beat up your Dad."

I don't remember learning much about the war of 1812. All I can remember from school is that the British burned the white house. We were too focused on Texas independence and wars with more definable outcomes.
