I don't see how it could ruin the franchise. It has millions of fans, thousands of which still play Halo 3. Even if ODST turns out to be a dud, it'll sell millions more on the merit of it's name, and if it's multiplayer isn't up to snuff, fans will likely just go back to 3.

As for not playing as the Chief... Honestly, the guy doesn't say two words of significance in the entire trilogy. You still play as a Spartan in ODST, so what's the difference?

No shields and better armour design. Also there is less pressure for you to save the galaxy.

if it bothers you that master chief isnt in the game then just pretend that the guy your playing is master chief just with better armor. its all basically the same thing. guy who RARELY says a thing dealing out death to funny looking aliens.
