One issue I have with turn-based combat, a mechanic I don't necessarily hate is that it's a painfully slow and dull experience if you have to grind through turn-based combat and some JRPGs require to much grind.

I've said it before and i'll say it again.
Skill>Gear
Why play with numbers and percentages when you can control the battle yourself?

It's not dead, Age of Decadance will soon show up.
No it won't. ot in our lifetime anyway.

But mainstream turn-based WRPGs are dead and they aren't coming back anytime soon. However, old game don't just vanish thans to the wonders of DosBox, Ebay and abandonware all the old RPGs are still available generally cheaply as well. So don't mourn the death of TBWRPGs celebrate the time when they were alive.

I started out my RPG life with those, and I'd like a few well-done ones to be made along with the current real-time ones.

Also I'd point out probably the main reason there aren't any TBWRPGs anymore is the size of the WRPG market. Seriously how many compaies are there amking big WRPGs at the moment? Four maybe five? Six at the most. Even then most are pretty slow to release games. While they still sell well WRPGs are a really small market.

You're in the wrong forum, man. Yahtzee hates turn-based combat; therefore, everybody here hates turn-based combat.

Personally, I enjoy turn-based combat to an extent. Sometimes it can get a bit complicated for my taste, but I wouldn't mind seeing more turn-based WRPGs. Hell, I don't even dislike JRPGs, which means I'm probably going to be banned or at least shunned, because I'm pretty sure everybody on the Escapist is obligated to eternally despise JRPGs, as well as Halo, the Wii, and everything displayed at E3.
Believe it or not, Not everyone on this site is trying to be Yathzee, and some people don't like Turn Based Combat.

It's horrible. I should miss because of my own fault, not because the game wants to be a dick about it.
Well of course, not everybody who says turn-based combat sucks is saying it because of him. But I'm quite certain that the vast majority are, whether they realize it or not.

I think in modern times, not being turn based is part of the defining characteristics of western RPGS.

A bunch of the JRPGs are still turnbased though, even then, a lot of them have edited the formula a bit and now they're not entirely "traditional turn based" if such a thing even existed.

I commented on this in a previous issue of the Escapist (way back before it become a webzine, in fact). Turn-based combat is a useful mechanic because it gives people time to think and plan their actions, without having to deal with issues to do with a poorly designed User Interface or the complexities of the system itself. All that Real-Time combat has done is turned RPGs into Diablo-clones.

Ironically, turn-based combat in RPGs is easy to institute via auto-pausing options, which then gave people the choice of whether they wanted turn-based combat or not. I was vastly disappointed when the original NWN failed to include such auto-pause features that made Baldur's Gate I and II so enjoyable and playable, and even more disappointed when I was ridiculed by other players of NWN for wanting a mod which put the auto-pause feature back in.

In several experiences with NWN, the more Real-Time is enforced, the less tactical the combat was. Players didn't simply have time to precisely position themselves, eyeball ranges, select targets, and so forth in the alotted time. On those games where use of the Space to pause was prohibited, most spellcasters simply didn't have time to use their spells, and instead relied on ranged weapons.

Maybe the freedom to think isn't all that immersive, but it's more immersive than having characters stand around dumbly waiting for you to choose your action while you operate the interface as those foes around you all get to use their flashy abilities without such hinderances.

They are a small market because those people who got shafted by the switch to Real-Time Combat as the only option voted with their wallets.

I like real time and turn based, is that alright?
Jeez, some people are such fun suckers, you don't like turn based? Don't buy the game, but stop trying to crap on the fun of people who do!
Seriously, I don't like FPS (cos I suck at them) but I am not going to say it is rubbish cos I don't like it, that's dumb.
Oh, I don't like torture movies either so they should just stop making them because I won't watch them..... Think that'll fly? No. Neither do I, and neither should it!
It is called freedom and choice and oh, a little thing called variety, have some..... It'll save us from stagnation.

There's not exactly a lot of role playing involved in turn-based RPGs, so good riddance I say. Unfortunately, JRPGs are determined that making your game turn-based is the future for all games, but a lack of true interactivity is present. This is why JRPGs and WRPGs will forever remain to be seen differently, well that and the insane amount of equiping you can do in JRPGs.

You may as well scroll through your iPod's menus while watching an awesome anime fight scene.

These games do still exist - mostly from indie game developers, though (Spiderweb Software, for instance, with their Avernum series). It's too bad, because no recent RPG has reached the levels of the best of the turn-based games - even the recent good stuff from Bethesda and Bioware is a bit too twitchy for my tastes (i.e., it all boils down to how fast you can click the mouse or hit a button).

Frankly I don't like any form of turn-based combat in video-games, so good riddance to it I say!
Exactly. Player skill is what should matter, as a game shouldn't help the really bad.
Em there is skill in turn based games. Mashing Attack button or cast spell button a la Oblivion is hardly skillful. KotOR is a brilliant game and is guess what a turn based WRPG. It does require as much skill as Oblivion and any other RPG out there. Every RPG can be boiled down to being the higher level and mash attack. Fair enough if you don't like it but it is still a skillful way of playing.

OT: I would like to see a revival of turn based combat to an extent as I feel RPGs are a bit empty with the lak of it. I would like to see a 50/50 split between turn based and non turn based for choice of types.

To be honest, while I do like some turn based games, I think it's an outdated mechanic. I think RPG's should aim at a very fast paced gameplay in the future, ala Star Ocean or World of Warcraft.

Well depends on what you mean by WRPG in this case. Do I want to see a game like fallout 1-2. No not really. The combat was pretty much the worse part of that game (everything else was awesome). But I do want to see the return of an x-com style team tactics rpg. Something along the lines of Silent Storm is awesome, but we need to see more of these turn based, squad tactics games... Where did I put my copy of that anyway.
