In the age of the net fanboy boycotts are meaningless since A: people who dont want to pay will find a way to watch it online, and B: expecting anyone in the business to actually care is like signing an online petition for anything. sure you can join in with the fervor, but it will never actually get anywhere.

Its not the original star trek, and its obviously not trying to be. just enjoy it , or not, for what it is based on its own merits. if its bad its bad, life goes on. it doesn't alter you view of the series so why get angry, even tangentially at a movie that you are not being forced to watch?
Ok. I'm boycotting this film for the same reasons that I won't be buying the new Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy novel:

Because I have too much respect for the original.

Watching this ill-advised prequel would taint many happy memories. Just remember, you can't unwatch it.

will most likely watch this on the intarwebz... just because...
the movie probably won't be good but it might a least be entertaining...
however this does raise a question that has been bothering me for some time... why can't they just do something new!?! are we forever doomed to an endless number of starwars, star trek, superman, batman,... bla bla bla sequels???

Completely unnecessary picture removed - mod

Thank you OP. Thank you for proving once again the idiocy of fanboyism.

This movie is going to be a spectacular event, a testament to the visual arts technology of our age, and an action film the equal of the Matrix or Die Hard. But no, you can't just sit back an enjoy it, because you're rooted in the belief that a crappy Mid-60s TV show shall never be surpassed.

Reality check Uncomparative... William Shatner was perhaps the very WORST actor in the original Star Trek, a man who's only talents are in just how untalented his is, and how serious he takes himself despite that fact. And the original Enterprise was an undetailed hunk of plastic and foam suspended by poorly masked wire. That JJ Abrams and Paramount are working to update this old relic is a good thing, because TOS sucks so horribly as a show, but the story is worth saving.

You think we should boycott a perfectly good film just because you believe nobody should tamper with your old show. This is why I fucking hate fanboys. Them making this movie doesn't suddenly make your DVDs of TOS disappear. JJ Abrams using Chris Pine as Kirk doesn't supernaturally replace all of Shatner's scenes with the new actor, nor will your discs suddenly show the Enterprise as a well-rendered 3D model instead of that ivory/tan hunk of plastic. You get to keep your original series, so let us have our new material. Our new Star Trek does not deprive you of your old one.

Abrams and Paramount go to such absurd lengths to please the fanboys, preserving the story and look, but do you appreciate it? No. You sit on the internet and *****, and ask people to boycott a film because it doesn't please you. Well nothing can ever please a fanboy, so shut the hell up and let the rest of us enjoy the fucking show!
You really are an idiot. How am I supposed to stop anyone from seeing this film?

I created this thread to see if I was totally alone in thinking that I didn't want my memories sullied by this recast prequel.

I am not.

I did not start a thread entitled:

Do you think we should all sneak into Paramount Studios at night and burn the negative of the new Star Trek movie before its too late?

I just think the Kirk Era needs to be listed as non-Canon and we can get on with it. Star Trek sucked until TNG and then sucked again with enterprise. I personally won't be going to see it because in my mind Kirk is just someones attempt to create an Idealized version of themselves as a maverick space captain who ran around sleeping with stupid women and did all the hard stuff himself while his crew worshiped him.

HOWEVER if it was a movie depicting the younger days of someone I cared about, say Picard or Sisco then I would be thrilled. Yes both roles as adults were filled by amazing actors but they are adult actors and to depict their younger days you need younger actors who still measure up. Frankly I think they found someone with slightly more talent than Shatner, which is not that hard.

Star Wars Episode I sucked, but I went to see it
Transformers sucked, but I went to see it
Star Trek will almost undoubtably follow the trend, & I will continue to be a sheep

Yes- why boycott a movie just because the trailer doesn't look completely Star Trek...Ummm....-ian?

If it's terrible, then we can all laugh about how mindlessly asinine and angsty the film was, but if it's done well, then we can all laugh about how people said they weren't going to even watch the film!

I hate star trek, nothing more than that.
This sums up my view on the whole thing. No shiny revamp will change my (low) opinion of Star Trek.

I'm a mid range trekkie, not obsessed, but I can quote quite a few lines. and personally, I don't really give a flying fart in space that they are using a new character for Kirk. Shatner was good, but really? you seriously want a 60ish year old (or older) man to play "young" Kirk? I think your being kind of shallow if you ask me. If I follow your logic, Christopher Reeve should be playing superman still.

I don't really have high hopes for this movie. I don't have a stake in the franchise, so I really don't care how it turns out. I will mind the reviews and will likely end up seeing it, but won't be shattered if it isn't amazing.

Ok. It doesn't matter to me how good/bad the trailer is.

I thought others would want to check it out to help form their opinion. Even if I hadn't seen it (and I kinda wish I hadn't) I would be opposed to watching a Star Trek prequel with a new cast. My feelings towards those actors in those roles are just too ingrained.

I do not have the same problem with: Sherlock Holmes, James Bond, Doctor Who, Superman, etc. (although, I have favorites)

Although if someone tries to resurrect Blake's 7 without Paul Darrow playing Avon I may just go out and kill someone...
