It would if Sony were responsible. As it is, it's Square Enix. It would be enough for me to have a bit more faith in them. I still like their games, but I haven't seen them make a truly incredible Final Fantasy since X, and I think the last game I absolutely loved from them at all was The World Ends with You. I really liked XIII, but it wasn't amazing.
Point is, no, it wouldn't. Sony's sins are far too deep and wide for that to happen, and Final Fantasy VII would in no way be their responsibility, so they would get no love for it outside of a few more people buying a PS3. I would freaking love a Final Fantasy VII remake, more than you could possibly imagine, but it would do nothing for my opinion of Sony.
Also, people need to stop terming Cloud as emo. Seriously people, he was never emo until Advent Children, but if we're going to complain about that we're starting to get into "emotional problems are stupid" territory, which is just bad storytelling principles. He had a genuine emotional struggle in Advent Children, and he wasn't emo in VII. So stop that. While we're at it, I think it's time we stop equating any Japanese character with emotional issues as "emo." It's stupid and getting old.
